Their coco flipped a harbinger of the seas which turns all his lands into islands, so he doesn't have white mana to cast 3 out of the 4 cards in his hand anymore.

One of the merfolk was the Flood Moon, so he had no white mana to cast Supreme Verdict, and no hope of drawing enough mana to cast Supreme Verdict because he only had 1 plains in the deck.
