I have to say that I was not expecting a double bass drum in a rock song, from a rock band, BUT it is AMAZING!! I enjoyed every second of this song! The drums were out of this world, the riffs were awesome and the harmonics/octaves coming from the lead were excellent! The bass was doing to fancy stuff as well that I didn't expect either. Thank you for watching and I hope you enjoyed!!

Yep, they've been combining genres pretty much since the start. Check out "Alone", the 1st song written entirely by the band that was accepted by their record label (3rd album, "Brand New Maid"). The perfect fusion of pop punk, funk, and rock, plus a shredding metal over punk solo by Kanami! Add killer vocals by Saiki and Miku, 👍👍🤟🤟🤟

As many bands play their music over the decades, we tend to pigeonhole (Miku pun?) & slice them into subgenres. From classical & folk music, the sounds & rhythms evolve into jazz form, some towards rock, some towards "pop" (whatever becomes "pop"ular at the time), etc. Years later, new bands tend to take those & fuse them back together (fusion) or evolve them further (jazz/soul into hiphop & rock into metal ... alchemy pun?), etc. Band-Maid does a good job of becoming one of those bands that like to play with the alchemy & see where it goes, although of course as of right now they do tend to play in the rock/metal area of sound, although they can certainly go full pop, jazz, & classical (both Western & Eastern classical) if they wanted to. Maybe even hiphop & soul. Most of the gals have music schooling, so that is where their music fundamentals & discipline come from, not to mention born talent.

YES! Akane definitely has a very metal oriented drumming. Most would recommend Black Hole, since it is their fastest song ever and Akane goes nuts in the end, but I personally would recommend "I still seek revenge" (also from their latest album) because it is so god damn HEAVY! Definitely my favorite Band-Maid song, drum wise. The bass is also massive there, which complements Akanes double kicking so incredible well.

Nice reaction. What I can hear: drums are very metal, lead Guitar is more hard rock oriented, bass is very funky/groovy and rhythm guitar is very punkish. I think that makes this band great, because they appeal to a lot of rock genres into their songs. Vocals are legit too, BAND-MAID experience is not complete without Saiki.

Yeah, and then there are their songs!!! Miku, the rhythm guitarist does most of the songwriting, and in Japan she is considered a guineas level poet ... the lead guitarist (Kanami does the majority of musical composition arrangements, and she's next level in that field.) As you can see, Misa (Bass) and Akane (Drums) are two of the best rock musicians you're ever going to find. Then there's Siaki, the lead singer .... beautiful strong talanted voice and a total command of an audience! And that's just scratching the surface of all the surprising and awesome aspects of Band-Maid/Band-Maiko and the girls' personalities!

Good analysis Jack. I’ve heard Kanami (lead guitar, green PRS) talk about being influenced by Carlos Santana and Eddie Van Halen. Drummer Akane has talked about being influenced by Maximum the Hormone’s drummer (Nao, I think is her name?). Akane didn’t use the double pedals until she joined Band-Maid - Kanami urged her to use them to be able to keep up with the pace of their music. Miku (rhythm guitar, silver Zemaitis) is mostly influenced by Kanami, who is her guitar teacher (Miku often calls her Kanami sensei). Miku didn’t even play when she started the band and has learned on the job. MISA’s influences are unclear to me but she was introduced to rock music as a child by her mother and has stated that she admires Paz Lenchantin and Smashing Pumpkins. She definitely has some jazz background, as you noticed.

Their songs often consist of powerful and accurate Akane drums, funky and tight Misa bass, and Kanami's melodic guitar. Miku plays an important element as the technique becomes more and more familiar with the teaching of Professor Kanami. This composition is the strongest even if each song is different.

Total control with amazing precision without being sterile and over produced. Consummate musicianship. Akane is one of the most natural drummers I have ever witnessed. You never hear her sticks hit against the rims where some of the very best world class drummers still do. I would love to hear them do some prog rock fusion. They are already bordering on a sound similar to Tool or Crimson they are constantly evolving musically which sets them apart from Love Bites and Baby Metal.

Kanami says her favorite is Santana but she has mentioned Van Halen, which is obvious in her love for tapping. MISA definitely has a Jazz influence in her bass playing. I can relate to MISA as I learned to play Jazz chords and solo on my guitar and played in a Jazz band. It has made me a better metal guitarist as I can take difficult solos and know how to dissect them into smaller phrases. Metal is quite simple in comparison to some of the leaps and stretches Jazz guitar has put me through.

In an interview Miku states “Band-Maid’s concept is about creating contrast - how we look and how we sound are worlds apart. One is cute and submissive in nature, the other is wild, powerful and dominant. I thought that idea was interesting. Basically, we want to defy expectations.” “We’re not a pop idol group! Don’t judge us on how we look. We want to blow you away with our heavy rock sound.” Miku: It might be different from being inspired, but I like a band called Tokyo Jihen. I think that had some impact. Kanami: Carlos Santana. Misa: The Smashing Pumpkins, Paz Lenchantin. Akane: Maximum the Hormone. This is the band that got me started on the drums. When you see me play the drums, I’m sure that you can see I’m very influenced by them. KANAMI TONO - LEAD GUITAR - plays PRS Custom 24 - Mesa/Boogie Triple Rectifier. - Writes the music (one interview she states that she has a database - 2 years worth?!?!) Miku Kobato - RHYTHM GUITAR - plays Zemaitis C24MF - EVH Amps - Writes the lyrics - Has only been playing guitar for about 7 years. Was the singer but took a back seat voluntarily! Misa - BASS GUITAR plays Black Cloud "Smoker" and Privat Reserve (SG Style) bass - Orange AB200B MKIII Amps Akane Hirose - DRUMS - Plays TAMA drums with Zildjian Cymbals Saiki - VOCALS - Sennheiser microphones and DPA Microphones

You young people and metal. Where do you think metal got the double bass inspiration from - that would be rock bands from the late 60's onwards. Ginger Baker of Cream was the first drummer I ever saw with a double bass drum kit, Keith Moon of The Who and Mitch Mitchell of the Jimi Hendrix Experience also being notable DB users, and it became almost de rigueur for prog bands. I don't know why Ginger Baker decided to go with the double bass but as he was a jazz drummer I wonder if he got the inspiration from jazz drummers of the late forties ( Louis Belllson arguebly the most famous double bass drummer) and fifties only falling out if fashion because of the logistics of lugging two bass drums around.

This strikes me as odd.....most of the adulation for this band, these written comments, all read and sound very similar. ALMOST as though they were written by the same person....and unusual grammatical errors by people with English-speaking-sounding names. Claims that can’t be taken seriously - LOTS OF THEM. I looked up a name or two online, and can find no evidence that they actually exist. BeenVerified, Twitter, Facebook- that’s very strange. Now who would do that ? The same puppet-masters pumping music into the speakers at live shows for these musicians to strum their guitars to ? For money? Gross. If true, GROSS. The only thing they can’t manipulate? The music really isn’t very good. You aren’t fooling anyone. Go make an honest living - you’ll feel better.
