I use petrus as my main method, so M2/R2 is definitely something I should use.

What he didn't mention is that out of those special algs for R2, two of them are the three cycle corner PLL, and at least two are just the corner twisting algorithm that people learn in the beginner method. Personally, I turned the R2 method into the U2 method and I use it with M2. It is very satisfying to use compared with Pochman.

If you treat every M2 and R2 move as half a full commutator, then you can do a setup before doing M2 or R2 twice and and turn bad cases into good cases. And then you undo the setup. For instance with M2, if you are solving a pair such as DF>UL>BD, you can do a B turn and then solve the pair as if you were solving DF>UL> BR and cut out a bunch of steps. Furthermore if you do BU setup, then you can do solve DF>UL>BD as if it is DF>UB>BR and then undo with U'B' and cut out even more moves. This idea is very flexible and intuitive. Now if you continue to think about two M2 turns as if they are one commutator, then you don't have to do an M2 every time. You can do M or M' and BD and FU become advantageous cases. For instance if you need to do DF>LF>FU, you can use M instead of M2 and UL'U' M' ULU' M and you have solved what would be a lot of moves, in just 8 moves and you're on your way to learning commutators. DF>LU>FU would be F'LF M' F'L'F M. By the same token, BD can become an advantageous case too. For instance DF>BD>UL can be solved using M B'L'B M' B'LB. And you can create all kinds of advantageous cases just using setups. And it's very intuitive. And just think about how many cases can be changed to M'U2MU2 by a simple setup. The same can be done with R2. If you think of R2 twice instead of single R2, you can do setups to take bad cases and make them good. For instance with a simple U' turn, DFR>UFR>UBR becomes DFR>UBR>UBL and that cuts out a lot of moves. DFR>BDR>UFR a very problematic situation becomes a very simple DFR>BDL>UBR with a simple setup of B'U' that you of course undo. You can also do R and R' moves instead of R2 to turn bad cases into good ones. For instance DFR>FRU>FLU is a very bad case. But if you do R and R' instead of R2, you can get and advantageous case with R ULU' R' UL'U'. Anyway I just scratched the surface. The possibilities are endless if you think of each M2R2 move and setup as if they were pairs or half of a commutator.

Glad someone mentioned this, as with very simple comm understanding you can optimize these methods a shit ton!

I have used R2 method from 2014-2018, gradually I moved from 2-step DFR 3-cycle, to just DFR 3-style. But yeah I switched to UFR, when the hardware got better, f' L S R2 S L' S' R2 F.
