There will never be another Gleason. He could change your emotions with a simple change of his facial expression. The Honeymooners is timeless and never gets old.

I had the privilege of meeting Jackie in the early 1980's in Hawaii and we became pretty good friends. We used to just sit around and have a good drink and tell story's to one another. Course he always had more story's than I did and I really enjoyed listening to them. Played golf with him several times at Wai'alae Country Club and pool? lol He was a master of the game. I really enjoyed our friendship we had together. I was very sad when I had to leave Hawaii and bid him farewell in 1986. At that time I was living in Atlanta, GA. He wrote me a letter and asked if I could come visit him him in Florida. I believe it was around February of 1987. I had planned on going down in July of that year but as it turned out he passed away in June of that year. Attended his funeral and paid my respects to his family. I count myself as being very lucky to have met him and being able to consider him a friend. RIP Jackie. I will see you again soon enough and we can sit and tell some more story's.

My Dad was a very good golfer and the hardest I ever heard him laugh, with tears rolling down his cheeks, was the episode of The Honeymooners where Norton was trying to teach Ralph how to play golf. Norton addresses the ball, "Hello Ball!" and Dad lost it right there. Had me rolling on the floor laughing at him. Miss ya Dad, Jackie and Art. Comedy like that is gone forever.

Sometimes that "one of a kind" phrase gets thrown around too much. But in Gleason's case, and I agree with you, he certainly was one of a kind. I was a kid in the early 60s, and I'll never forget our family watching The Jackie Gleason Show together.

He was the Babe Ruth of American Comedy. His huge appetites for life and fearlessness as a performer made him truly The Great One. How many guys his size would have the nerve to dance as he did in this retrospective? Chris Farley maybe, that's about it. He was a control freak, brilliant innovator and had endless energy. And my favorite, absolute favorite character he created wasn't even Ralph Kramden. It was Joe the Bartender, tending his bar on the old Jackie Gleason show, as Frank Fontaine came out as Crazy Guggenheim. Lord they were funny together. Of course I was 6 years old at the time. Funny what stays with you all your life.

A work associate of mine, circa 1987, could have portrayed Jackie Gleason as a young man. He was sensitive to people making that observation so we didn't bring it up often so as not to annoy him. This fellow passed away at the relatively young age of 51. Anytime I see Jackie Gleason I think of my former associate as the resemblance was _so_ uncanny. Both men are gone but not forgotten.
