I’ve said it on other Roseanne videos and I’ll say it here - Laurie Metcalf works mainly in the theatre in stage plays. If you *ever* have the opportunity to see her live in *any* play, take it. Doesn’t matter what the play is. That woman is a force of nature on the stage. Even if the play isn’t great, she is almost always captivating and electric.

@Mimi_622 Idk if you watch Buffy the Vampire Slayer or not but I love the onscreen acting chemistry between Buffy (Sarah Michelle Gellar) and Spike (James Marsters) whether it was as enemies, allies, lovers or friends because of what they both bring to the table with their acting. Sarah Michelle Gellar was on "All My Children" Soap opera as a teenager and even won an Emmy for a roll as Kendall. James Marsters did lot of stage acting growing up so for him to get to know his character he does the method. Even in between seasons he kept up with his Spike character persona. He did that for 7/8 years so because of the type of character he played it really took a toll on his mental health and had to do therepy especially in the later seasons of Buffy.

There's a lot going on with Jackie in this scene. What makes Darlene's jabs so devastating is that there's a hint of truth in everything she says. Remember Jackie survived an abusive childhood and fell into the same routine with Fisher, who she only left because Roseanne was there to hold her hand. When she lets one fly it's the same cycle all over again, and you can see it in her eyes, she's horrified at where she let herself go the second after she did it. Laurie Metcalf acted the hell out of that scene.

I mean I think the difference is that Jackie was a victim of abuse (physical abused by her father and at least one boyfriend, emotionally abused by her mother), but Darlene didn’t. And to top it off, Darlene was walking around going after everyone. Dan got up to intervene when Jackie struck Darlene, but he wound up catching Harris because she was trying to keep the fight going instead of separating the two. Another point to remember is the episode where Roseanne went a little smack happy on DJ after he scared her and it freaked out Jackie and Roseanne. Dan knows Jackie isn’t going to lose it because of how she reacted then.

The family is not Jackie’s. If she wants a family of her own, settle down with a nice guy & do it the way normal people do. Instead, Jackie has to try & butt in on Roseanne family. Why? Why did she "deserve a slap" then? When I started watching the show, it was about 5 years in. Darlene's character was only a few years older than me, when I started high school, MANY of the girls I went to school with were Darlene-esque. I'd say my town was maybe middle class, and the Connors lower middle class. I can say with great confidence that Darlene was a very typical, average 90s teenager. I guess maybe because I'm a step dad and it's simply not an option, but I never look at a kid or young adult and think to slap them, or even liking to, or even someone else to.

I didn't know this show was still on. But damn I see why. This scene shows how ugly grief can get. Jackie is drinking. Darlene is sleeping around, while trying to fill the Matriarch role. Horrible name calling and explosive fights. As someone who lost my mom last year I can say unfortunately this is all too accurate sometimes.
@marchartley2457
@marchartley2457 4 жыл бұрын
About what you said last month, I know what it's like to lose a mother 8 years ago last September 5th, even though I tried everything in my power to save her until the paramedics came and took her to the hospital where she died later, even though the doctors did everything THEY could to save her. Then 5 and a half years later my Aunt Mary died as well. BOTH died of a sudden heart attack, okay? AND as far as the Darlene thing is concerned, I think she needs a great big Minion Hug from me, just like I think Sara Gilbert needs a great big Minion Hug from me as well. I feel very bad for Sara being slapped in the face by Laurie Metcalf. Like you said, grief can be very ugly sometimes.

@@marchartley2457 I'm really sorry to hear of your losses. It'll be two years in July since I lost my mom. She went in with breathing problems and a bad infection. The doctors ended up putting her in a drug induced coma, and gave her the one medication she was deathly allergic to. Somehow they weren't aware even though it's in her medical records, and we flipped out telling them to take her off of it. She ended up passing a few hours later. Really threw our family into a major depression. Thankfully we're coming out of it now but yeah. It got pretty ugly a few times.

@Nenethegreat W Agree it is about time. Grief can and does get really ugly. About time we start seeing what it's really like then enforcing this damaging narrative. "Don't feel, take a pill, be a cog in societies bullshit scheme, you're taking up too much time with your feelings."

Petty Labelle I lost my mother when I was 10. Dysfunction dominated the household from that point onward. Only on TV it’s funny but I’m not talking about this particular scene. This is tragic. And unfortunately all-too-familiar on my end too

This show (I'm counting the original Roseanne run as well) always felt more "Real" than any other sitcom. Yeah there's whacky stuff obviously, but it really stays true to how an actual Midwestern family can be. Also, my condolences to you and your family.

I took a small acting class a couple of weeks ago, and the instructor showed this scene for Laurie Metcalfe’s performance. He said, “You will never see a performance so raw and so natural. This is anger. This is pain. This is frustration. Learn from this scene.”

NEVER see a performance so raw and natural? In anything else besides a 2020s sitcom? I would get your money back and then slap your instructor ala this scene because they have zero knowledge of film or acting. The performance by Metcalf is good, don’t get me wrong… but never a performance like it? Please get real.
