2002-2006 Honda CRV PCV Valve and Breather Hose Replacement

In this video I show you how to change the PCV valve and PCV breather hose on a 2005 Honda CRV with the 2.4 engine. This procedure is a little more difficult due to the very limited amount of space under the hood, but can be completed at home with basic tools. You just need a little bit of patience. I ordered these parts from an online Honda parts dealer. You should only use an OEM PCV valve. Most aftermarket ones will fail rapidly or not work and then you will need to do the job again! I did it without removing the black plastic shield, the cross member, or anything else. To my surprise it was actually quite easy. Tools used: 1. 16" long reach 90 degree pliers (part of 16" Long Reach Plier Set" from Harbor Freight) 2. 17mm deep wall socket 3. 3/8" drive long reach flex head ratchet (from Harbor Freight) 4. Long flat head screw driver With the 16" 90 degree pliers it's pretty easy to grab the clamp from underneath. Once you have the clamp opened up with the pliers use the long flat blade screwdriver to help work the clamp backwards. The rest is self explanatory. Tip: Remove/install the clamps and hose while standing in front of the engine bay and remove/install the PCV valve while standing on the passenger side of the engine bay. Thanks for the video! Great video. I just did this on an 2005 CRV after watching his video. A couple of observations. The EGR has a plug in wire harness (It is right above the PCV and could get damaged) that is not shown in the video, go ahead and carefully unplug it and move it out of the way, then reconnect when done. Also if you pull the radiator at the bottom towards you... after unbolting the top frame support as he did. You can lift the reservoir overflow up (twist it slightly) and out of your way. You will have plenty of room then. I then took a cleaner spray and a rag and cleaned the bottle so its easier too see when installed how much antifreeze you have or don't have! When you reinstall that bottle get the plastic cleat to slip in at bottom into the metal frame before attaching it with the 10mm up top. The LAST thing you want is the bottom of that overflow tank rubbing and moving around. That will wear a hole or crack and could cause a leak in the reservoir tank. It only goes back one way if its secure. Genuine Honda parts I used were sourced from 2 sellers on ebay and as July of 2021 cost $45. for both the hose and PCV. Change them together and use Honda parts. The hose was completely collapsed and sons car is consuming 1 qt of oil a month. If this doesn't help I will be doing a piston soak when changing the plugs out.

If you turn wheel all the way to the left you can actually access the oil filter through the cutout on the passenger side while on the ground, you might even be able to more easily access the V-Tech solenoid by removing that tire as well.

The first comment. On old cars built in the 1990s and before the PCV was very easy to service and could be replaced in two minutes. In modern cars, it is far more difficult to service.

Great video. Thanks. My experience, there was no need to move rad support to re-re PCV. Tight, but can be done. Use a long pick tool to move hose clamp right side up then small pliers for hose clamp. 3/8 drive 17mm deep socket w/ 3" extension for the PCV. Expect some finger cramping on your index and ring finger working in and out the PCV.

we just did the same , take 2 hours , because we've to make DO with "NOT" appropriate tools . just first time replacing after 300k kms, it look just like in the video, still some sounds when shaking it. but the end result , its WOW , the acceleration is very responsive, , so much better and faster . and i wonder,, how often should this PCV Valve need to be replace ? and we wonder why it has good driving performance afterward .

The other end of the PCV valve tube is in a different spot on the 2002-2004, the 2005 and 2006 is or slightly different

@@enzoh7763 you can usually clean them out: "Clean all of its parts with carburetor cleaner or brake cleaner, then blow off any excess liquid with compressed air" or let air dry. Make sure you can hear the ball rattling in the pcv valve when you shake it after cleaning

Couldnt rip the hose off so i just had to cut it at the connection and then socket it out. Theres enough slack in hose to just cut it straight and put it back in with an adjustable hose clamp

After a long overhaul on my head and cooling system, plus a bunch of diagnostics, I took my CRV out. When idling no prob, but when I hit the highway I was losing a bunch of oil. Bad pcv and that caused my vtec solenoid rings to go.

Helpful video...22 years I work as a delivery guy , have had all kinds of cars , my question is this , most cars have pcv valve easily accessible , why some cars like this are made so hard to reach 4:20 ...aren't designers supposed to be highly intelligent people ?! they should think that at least parts that need more frequent maintenance should be easily accessible ...for example oil filter or thermostat should not be located somewhere that is a big dilemma to reach them ...Why ?!!

As the years go by and cars get more over engineered, it's no surprise that young people aren't going into auto mechanic like they used to. I HATE...and I can't emphasis that word more...working on my wife's CRV. Japanese engineers have designed this car and most other imports with clearances that require hands no larger than a Japanese school girl to be able work on them. To service my old F250, I just climb into the engine compartment and use a bigger hammer if things don't go right. Thanx for the video. I have the new valve but I'm finding every reason to procrastinate putting it in. But thanx for the good info anyway.

Nicely done, however I would never go with all that OEM Hose and other Honda parts... The whole PCV Valve system is inferior and is a good way to keep your engine gunked up much quicker (because of emission laws it is only designed to recirculate non burnt up oil blow by back into the intake (or intake manifold like on this K24A1 engine here)), as the factory PCV Valve system leaves built up residue inside the intake manifold and plenum after Time because it is recirculating any spent oil fumes from the engine block by vacuum pulling them back in... To have the intake, intake plenum, throttle body, pcv hose, and underneath Valve cover all stay much cleaner I HIGHLY RECOMMEND GETTING AN OIL CATCH CAN KIT!, or plumbing in-line just a catch can somewhere between the 2 ends of the hose... The problem with the CRV is there is not really anywhere to mount a Catch can except to the radiator support center beam just in front of the plastic Intake Manifold with that short of a hose... It is too tight so you'd be super limited to a tall narrow rectangular or cylindrical catch can... With that said I would definitely get some braided hose with AN fittings, or at least some longer rubber hose to be able to mount it to somewhere youll have easy access to physically be able to turn the removal cap/filter off whenever it is time to drain (which would probably be a good idea every 5000-10,000 miles or at least 1nce or 2wice a year)....

I wonder if cleaning the PCV with carb cleaner would be an alternative to replacing one. Although for the cost of replacement part and how much work it takes to get one, it almost makes sense to replace it with a new one. I would recommend to replace it with Honda part only. If not available, then cleaning the original part would be the next choice for me.

I did this two days ago, except replacing the the hose ( due to thinking it was still usable not wanting to buy a $50 hose from Honda) I did buy a Honda pcv valve though. Well after I finished I got a P0661 code and not sure why? BTW I also replaced the crush washer as well. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. I did use a long needle nose with a curved tip to undo the clamps!

That hose setup is way better on your model. On my 03 you have to take the intake manifold cover off and the hose it like 3 feet long and routers over the intake manifold and then connects into the throttle body. I had no idea what that hose was for because I had to replace mine when the hose was rotting and causing a vacuum leak. Now I know its the PCV line.

Just replaced my PCV valve in my 2003. Didn't replace that long hose, but I blew through it and it's open. Valve was oily but seemed functional. Losing a quart every 200 miles. No smoke, no drips. Oily soot in tailpipe. Mechanic advised heavier oil. Ran 20W50 for 2500 highway miles. Got about 400 miles to the quart. I hope this new valve solves that problem.

@@factotumted It seemed to help at first, but I can' be sure I've been using 20W50 exclusively, and I added a quart of Lucas a couple thousand miles ago. Getting about 700 to the quart. Car goes into the shop Monday for valve guide seals. Why valve guides? Process of elimination. Compression is good, so it's not rings. If valve guide work doesn't solve the problem, I'll be all out of ideas and guesses.

I want to be sure the oil isn't disappearing through the PCV circuit before I have expensive guesswork done. After a couple hundred miles, I should have my answer.

It's routine maintenance to prevent blown engine seals and oil consumption. Signs of bad pcv vary depending on if it has failed open or closed but can include poor mileage, oil consumption, oil leaking, etc.

On earlier gen 2's the hose is longer and runs under the plastic engine cover. Having a hard time finding the part number for it. I have a 2002. Its otherwise the same.

My son and I just replaced the alternator on a 03 crv, We removed the throttle body and the intake manifold for room. Now it's throwing DTC codes (p0505, p1077, and p1505) and the idle was surging 900-1900 rpms. Trying to figure out what we missed. One of the codes is the 1505 for leaky PVC, however I get a 1077 code also, IMT (IMRC) valve stuck/short. The PVC hose is not in the best shape. Just wondering if the PVC issue could be the root of the other codes. Well here's hoping its the PVC valve or the hoses, BUT I'm open to any suggestions while I wait for the parts. I do have a higher end Autel scanner. I did top off the antifreeze coolant as we lost close to half a gallon then ran at 3k rpm till the cooling fans came on, then left to idle for 5 minutes trying to reset the CPU, that did help the idle surges to a point, but still throwing the same codes after I cleared them. Telling me the problem still exists. Best I can tell and see, we reconnected all hoses and electrical connections.

Gave me the confidence to tackle this myself as my car is burning about a liter of oil every 500 km. 45 minutes and one blood blister under my thumb nail to do the job of the valve and hose, without removing anything to make room. Did it with a variety of breaker bars and the smallest ratchets I could find, as well as trying a variety of different size needle nose pliers

Maybe its just part of his preventive maintainance routine Codes will just activate until a short or open circuit occur on a sensor...it will not tell you if there is a clogged or a leak of air...example if you put the maf sensor out of the intake manifold it still run but with a delay on revving..

A bad PCV valve could cause the engine to run rough and also could allow oil to be burned in the combustion chamber. There may be no code. Its preventative maintenance

@@JackofAllMasterofNone It's also a good idea to reset the ECU so the computer can register any changes. I just did this and accidently cut the hose installing it. The air leak caused the CRV to burn 2 quarts in 80 miles before I caught it. No smoking, no codes, just a sound.

Wondering about fuel economy and any oil consumption issues you fellow crv owners are having. have a 2005 CRV with about 120k on it. Getting 17-18mpg avg with mostly highway driving (at 70mph). Also, have a mysterious oil consumption issue losing about a quart every 1500 miles or so. If anyone has had similar issues and/or fixed them, please post here would love to get any additional feedback/ insight. Will be replacing pcv in a few days to see if that positively effects either issue.

I hope you have all checked the perimeter of engine valve cover. Only other spot I can think of is the harmonic pulley, there is the main seal. The other main seal is on the engines transmission side. They are both called main seal, one is front the other is rear. of course there are other reasons you could be losing oil but I hope one of these fixes your problems. I wouldn't touch the seal next to transmission as it could be very difficult and you'd open yourself up to more spending. Transmission has seals there too. Depending on how long you want to keep your cars or your budget I'd say just drive it how it is until it dies. Check all your fluids and make sure there is no mixing and they're at the right level. Good luck. I don't think the engines cost too much if you want to replace it when it dies or symptoms of it failing within the month. You can easily spend more maintaining an old engine than to ride it until the very end and replace it.

Can a bad pcv valve cause some white smoke in the exhaust? I did a compression test thinking blown head gasket with coolant in the cylinder getting burned but they all test out 162 psi and above.

It would usually be blue smoke caused by oil but could look white. You would smell the burning oil though.

my car also has oil consumption issue like that. Never any oil on my driveway or smoke out of the exhaust. Took it to a shop and they replaced a bunch of seal and gaskets maybe 4 or 5 in total (ill try to find the service overview sheet out of my car) that were apparently leaking on/around the engine. They were surprised I hadn't seen any oil on my driveway yet, maybe it was gummed up on the engine and I tend to run my car through the wash frequently so perhaps that's why I didn't notice. Anyways, I'm always skeptical of stuff like that, but they are a well reviewed shop and seemed well to do enough so I just had them do it. Their price also seemed quite a bit more reasonable that previous dealership shop trips. The problem still persists on my vehicle, though not as bad. From my research these engine tend to consume some oil with age anyways, though that amount is still excessive. Also from what I have read the pcv valve seems to be a cause of some oil consumption in these cars as well so I'm gonna give that a try too. Best of luck with yours as well.

Hello Jack My 2005 CRV has a very poor fuel economy at 11MPG.. Manufacturer average is 22MPG. 105km trip took 21.8 liters of petrol... Changed the Airflow sensor, plugs are fine... In your experience what needs to be done to fix this issue?

Mine doesn't run great at about 17mpg but I'd start with simple things like air filter and tire pressure. Even if the spark plugs look fine, it may be prudent to change them if they have never been changed b4. the service interval is 110k and id recommend only buying the proper NGK ones. try getting some seafoam. they make a liquid version you can add the gas tank and your oil and an aerosol for running through the intake. project farm and others have great videos about it and I have read plenty of success stories with it. cleaning the fuel system and upper engine components may help. also recommend using a good full synthetic oil and checking all fluid levels periodically. also check the brakes to make sure nothing is dragging sometimes they can drag or the calipers can get stuck without noticing or make much noise.

@@jaym5938 Nope if the belt and tensioner are still in good condition you don't need to replace them. You only need to remove the PS pump to access the PCV valve and hose

would a bad hose cause a misfire on cylinder 1? been trying to narrow it down and aside from checking for vaccuum leaks, it's driving me crazy.

It could be bad gasoline. I always use 92 octane. Always buy gas at a reputable company. The small time gas stations have old holding tanks and their gasoline often gets contaminated

PCV won't cause a misfire, but a bad coilpack will. I had a misfire on cylinder 3, but kept getting a knock sensor code often. The cyl 3 coilpack stalk (part going down to spark plug) looked like it had rust spots on it, so I figured it was the coil pack going out at 210k mi (maybe arcing thru the plastic). I researched all the replacement coilpack prices and reviews and many people had great luck with the AutoZone brand (surprisingly) over lots of others. At $154 (2021)for the set of 4 new coilpacks w/ lifetime warranty I have it a shot. Fixed the misfire and knock codes. Been 25k mi and still doing great. (Probably got yours fixed by now, but posting for anyone with a similar issue.)

I had no symptoms. It was just a precautionary measure since the hose was collapsed on itself and the PCV valve was the original.

@@JackofAllMasterofNone Could a failed PCV cause the crankshaft seal to blow out? My wife was driving, so I don't know exactly what happened but the crankshaft seal never leaked at all, and then the other day catastrophically failed on the freeway. I hope to jack it up tomorrow and take the tire off, to take a better look... replacing the seal is easy enough, but I can't find anyone on the interwebs who has had a sudden catastrophic failure in their crv, I'm wondering why this happened... and staying up late worrying, lol...

I'm wondering if this would be better as well. I'm a big guy and my hands aren't made for working on my 06 CR-V. The pump is only a couple bolts then you are clear. I just removed and cleaned the intake and all associated parts. I think removing the power steering would be less trouble than the plastic cover and core support. I'd like to hear opinions on this if anyone cares to post replies. Great video!

@@waynestinyworld way easier to remove the ps pump sir. I've done this on probably 25 crvs lol. Good idea to clean that intake as well. The imrc valve inside the intake manifold can get gummed up and cause loss of power and possible engine light to come on.

Can a big fuel usage means that the imrc valve is stuck? My honda cr-v 2003 have much fuel usage i drive 300km on a full tank of fuel. I hope someone can help me find the problem

I mean it can sometimes cause an increase in fuel usage but you would have other symptoms. Usually lack of power and a check engine light

@@JackofAllMasterofNone Just acquired my 2003 with 158K miles. Manual transmission. 24 mpg highway at 75mph. Oil? 200m/qt. No smoke, no drips Oily soot in tailpipe. Switched to 20W50 oil for 2500 miles. Same mileage and less oil consumption, but still way too much. Compression good at 160-150-140-160. Changed the PCV valve today. Old one seems functional, though very oily. We'll see.

Since I'm swapping the serpentine belt, tensioner and possibly alternator (maybe eld chip as well or battery, tachometer is dimming, next day the heating button dims) This should be a lot easier to access for me :) I'll think about posting a video for everyone. It won't be until spring or so when it gets warmer in my area 🥶

Could a PCV valve going bad cause a continuous “chick chick chick chick” sound at idle? Mine gets okay fuel economy at 121k miles but I’m noticing my engine is sounding funny and I know that my valve has not been replaced.

Super stupid engineering from Honda. Why in the world did they place the PCV so hidden and hard to get to? I have a 2003 CRV and I wanted to changed its PCV too...it shouldn't be this hard. I changed both of my Toyota Sienna and my Hyundai Elantra PCV in less than 15 minutes...both of their PCVs are on top of the engine block!

Yeah, it's definitely not designed to be easy to change which is odd because most other things on Honda's are.

its prudent to replace the hoses if theyre so old, so jsut get a new hose and cut the thing out of the way. it should help give you more room to get under the valve

All CR-Vs with 2.4L are actually gas guzzlers. They barely can do 20 mpg in the city. CR-V & Civic are built that many parts need to be replaced will cost you dearly or very hard to get to. You will scream when CR-V needs Oi Pan Gasket or Oil Pump O-Ring, same with Civic. Yes, including the Crankshaft Bolt, Crankshaft's Seal & CV Axle's Seals.

Sounds like 03 crv and 03 corolla I know diff car company's are money traps b carefull sink $$$ into something not sure I want isn't good idea 200 02 sensor 15 mins to do trans service 100 at Honda that's cheap enough I like the car money pit
