Jackson isn't just a songwriter - he's a poet. One of the best. I've loved his music for over 40 years and I'm just... envious. And David Lindley is the most unrecognized musician on the planet. If it's got strings, he can play it. Better than most. We saw him live with El Rayo-X in New Orleans in the late 80s and they were just jaw-dropping. Two of my favorites, jamming in the rehearsal room. Life is good indeed.

I became a huge fan of Jackson Browne after seeing him credited with writing " Take it Easy ". His lyrics and haunting melodies are a part of my youth, still taking me back to a special time in my life. Glenn Frey spoke of how he learned to write songs while living in an apartment above Jackson back in the Echo Park section of L.A., and those like J.D. Souther all had a great impact on what became a soundtrack for my younger days.

I was a United Airlines Boeing 757 captain before retiring at age 65 in 2015. I would routinely fly from Phoenix to Denver in the 757 navigating northbound on the Standard Instrument Departure Route out of PHX. That route took me directly over Winslow, Arizona. I would typically be climbing through about 24,000 feet when downtown Winslow would pass off my left. I would always look down searching in vain for that girl in her flatbed Ford, but of course, I never found her. Great song, great lyrics, and thank you Jackson Browne and the Eagles for bringing a little joy to my stressful job from so many years ago.

Cool 100% true anecdote. A friend has a guitar shop. A young customer walks in, looks around, deep in thought. Finally my friend walks over to him. 'Can I help?' The kid says 'yeah I want a guitar so I sound like the Eagles'. My friend says 'oh but you can't do that with only one guitarist, you need two, and the one has to use an open tuning!' So he calls me over, has me pick up an acoustic, says 'Take It Easy', grabs another acoustic fast as anything, retunes it to open G on the fly, I start in, my friend follows along, the kid goes 'WOW!' Amazing sound one gets...

If you watch videos of performances of this song, by both the Eagles and Jackson Browne, it's pretty conspicuous how how Jackson always mentions "cowriting" it with Glen Frey, and Frey never mentions Jackson. In the Eagles documentary was the only time I've heard him mentioned. Jackson lived in an apartment upstairs or downstairs from Frey and JD Southern. They'd hear him practicing and working on stuff. Take It Easy caught his ear. And he handed it off, finally, to Glen. But you never hear the Eagles introducing the song, mentioning its origin onstage.
@czarkhasm4 жыл бұрын
Jackson's mentioning of it might have something to do with the fact that some people (not his oldest fans) ONLY know the Eagles' version. That said, yeah... it seems odd that Frey wouldn't have mentioned it, particularly because it's such a great story. It's possible, though, that since it was the band's gangbuster entry into the popular music world, he didn't want to lessen the band's bona fides. Maybe Henley could speak to that at some point.
@ericbennion21282 жыл бұрын
@@czarkhasm @william Knell Both Henley and Frey have gone on record saying that they and many others were greatly influenced by Jackson's song writing in those early days and they even give him credit for helping them get signed by Geffen - their fist recording contract!

If you ever see Don Henly in a bar, remind him that 80% of the Eagles hits were written or co-written by others. Take it Easy Peaceful Easy Feeling Already Gone Take it To the Limit Best of My Love Hotel California Lyin Eyes and Tequila Sunrise were written by Frey and Henly, but they are basically the same song.

These stories are so great how the song comes together. What a great, great song. But the Winslow Arizona line does make it better. And when I was traveling through Arizona and saw Winslow, I had to stop. And if you're ever close don't miss it. About 30 minutes off you're trip but very memorable.

I gotta say... I much prefer Jackson's "she's just a little hard to find" (as he does here as well on For Everyman) to the Eagles' "she's so-o-o hard to find"... but in recent performances I've seen/heard, Jackson has gone to the Eagles' version. For some reason, that annoys me. I guess I like the rhythm of his original lyric.

Exactly my feeling about this as well!! I go one step farther, and feel robbed when he uses the Eagles' type ending rather than going to Our Lady of the Well...

In terms of lyrical flow. There are too many words in “just a little hard to find”, making the math of music, hard to flow through all those words. “ soo hard to find fits the key time better and it allows for the flow of harmony to be heard more clearly. Just a little music theory. :)
