This man changed my life - and I do not mean that as your standard internet hyperbole - his music motivates me on a profound level. Went back to working on my guitar skills, started taking voice lessons and even started toying around with the piano, solely because of Jacob Collier. I think his music just keeps reminding me that however complex and daunting music can be, ultimately it's just an expression of whatever you have to offer inside of you. That was a profound thing for me to find, thank you, Jacob!

Why teach music theory, when you can just do amazing and beautiful music that ppl will feel excited about and learn from and out of excitement. I believe what Jacob was trying to say is that there is nothing that makes art pure or impure, only what connects with the listener and the artist. I am sure of this because Jacob has said time and time again that he is a passionate believer in the fact that there is no wrong or right note, wrong or right chord, or wrong or right sound, only the sound that works the most for the musician. Jacob’s open-mindedness has always informed his creativity.

Jacob Collier acts like a robot trying to imitate humans. He might very well actually be an ai-generated video. There is nothing human about his performance. It's too perfect and repetitive, and everything in speech and music is borrowed from others in a perfect way. He is like a machine. And nothing he makes is of any interest for anyone with a minimum of education. I assume his fans are not very smart, to put it mildly. If Jacob Collier is human at all, I feel sorry about him, as he seems to be acting automatically like some kind of autism or lack of consciousness repeating quotes from texts he picked up.

@MrPipol-nm3cd In your subjective opinion… I mean just because you don’t personally connect with his latest album doesn’t mean he’s a fully commercialized version of what he once was at an artist. A lot of Jacob’s earlier work was chalk full of all of these intricate and complex details to the point where many people (not me personally) complained that they couldn’t grasp what he was trying to “say” as an artist. His 4 Djesse albums are really a document of his journey as a musician, you can really see how he matures and grows over time. In my opinion, he’s never been better! Like I said, I’m sorry you don’t personally connect with his newer music at the moment, but Jacob has never been anything more or less than his truest most authentic self.

I’m a fan too. I’m not sure he’s ‘hidden’. He’s got a big fan base but his music isn’t as populist as that made by some of his collaborators. The only slight concern I have is that he’ll burn out as he’s so active and inventive constantly. I don’t think this will happen hopefully. Someone said on this thread: make this man a professor. This would be good too because he’s an excellent and inspiring teacher and this would keep him grounded.

@@PianoDanny No, you're right. Hiding does imply that's it's by intention but he has hardly any exposure on mainstream media and for me (or any of my friends) to not of heard of him is extraordinary. As for his popularity I don't doubt it for a second, he can fill shows all around the world, he has a dedicated following of knowledgeable fans, much like Joe Bonamassa who can charge hundreds for a ticket and the man in the street has never heard of him.

How Jacob has managed to navigate his way from his solo explorations alone in his room, to the extraordinarily confident and talented person he now is, continues to amaze me. I loved it when he decided to find talented people to collaborate with, and he describes his experiences with such profound insight and articulation. I've also been in one of his 'conducted' audiences and I understand completely the emotional connection he talks about and the notion of 'permission'

Hello Guys and Thank you, Thank you, THANK YOU! Two points dominate my sense of feeling overwhelmed: 1. ‘Seeing’ sounds/notes/frequencies/vibrations and the ‘Feeling’ of what we see/hear, (And the greater general combo of perceptual processings getting mixed!) 2. Each person as a note in which all other notes are combined. I once saw an example of a tuning fork being struck and from which the resonance caused a second tuning fork to ‘sing’. In that ‘note/key’ I could hear other notes. Jacob seems to me to be the first tuning fork through /from which all us other tuning forks can vibrate and ‘sing’ in a global symphony that in turn sets up a harmonic both from and within itself causing a greater understanding of sound, vibration, frequency, self and the ALL! I am truly overwhelmed and ever grateful for the triggering of this -for me- epiphany. Thank you. 🙏🥰

I’m not a musician. But maybe what Jacob said here 1:01:44 , it’s like colours, which feels different according to the surrounding. I do gardening and I’ve noticed how colours are relative. For example salmon flowers sometimes seem orange, but when grown next to orange flowers they suddenly look more pinkish to the eye.

I think that the phrase "less is more" is socially accepted because few musicians explore limits and want to expand them, they don't test, they don't take risks, as Jacob says, I don't know why, out of fear or because they simply do not have enough skills in their arsenal to try everything. And we as listeners have become accustomed to the standards and limits of most musicians. I start to think about this under the idea that what we consider sensorially appropriate or not in music is still partly a social construction and also because I personally love that "multitudinous" of Jacob and other artists like Dimash, for example. Fantastic interview, thanks, and sorry for my bad english.

Just saw an ad during this interview with the image and voice of an AI narrator on screen. I skipped the ad and was brought right back to Jacob speaking, and that juxtaposition suddenly gave me this sense that people are really going to be fed up with this artificial crap at some point probably pretty soon (I hope!), and that Jacob is a perfect example of what can never be created by machines. You can tell he's human. What this man could do with a rigorous classical training! I love him any way he is though. He has a portal to the celestial angels praising GD in song without end! We are privileged to know him. He inspires the way Leonard Bernstein did.

He has a bit of all types of training. He grew up singing Bach chorales, learned violin and moved on to double bass for most of his childhood and teenage years, had formal vocal training and sang in operas since young, and his biggest influence is his mom who is a very respected Violin and orchestra educator with a vast knowledge of classical music and approach, at one of the most prestigious schools in London. He would sit in her classes since very young as well and has studied many classical pieces on Piano and written pieces for orchestra, string quartet, and chorales for his solo albums for years. I don't think he needs any more classical training. It would be redundant and counterproductive to his creativity. He is very good at writing for classical instruments in his music and blending those instruments into modern music. If you want him to keep writing more involved orchestra works I guess he'd have to limit his time spent being creative in other styles and methods of composition. It's a matter of preference at this point, not training. It's like saying "what Michael Jackson could do with rigorous tap dancing training"... kinda missing the point, but I get that it's a matter of taste and fantasizing about "what ifs"
