People are critical because Jacob is very well spoken and had all the opportunity in the world, plus the complexity of his music. However there are millions of kids out there that have all the same opportunities but don’t do anything with it. He’s one in millions, they don’t come along very often

I particularly enjoy watching Jacob playing piano as the piano is like an extension of him, as if they are one. He is a musical genius, a modern day Mozart. He seems also a genuinely nice person. I’d so love to attend one of his concerts but poor health would make it very difficult. Thank goodness for KZbin so I can still enjoy some of what he does.

This guy's a damn good piano player. He's talking about "chord voicing" You can play the "same" or similar chord in many different ways on the piano and you can also reharmonize. ie: playing a slightly different chord that still supports the melody. There's almost limitless possibilities on how to do this which makes it a fascinating subject to study.

Two interviewers who literally have no idea they are interviewing the most important musician for a century.
@MrTimg122 ай бұрын
To be fair it's a live BBC breakfast programme that deals with current affairs mostly with some divergence into the arts . They're middle aged journalists who probably haven't heard/ seen JC before and only had a briefing just before the programme aired. In the small time allocated they had to introduce video clips and maintain a conversation. It was never meant to be anything other than a brief interview telling viewers who he was. In all likelihood JC was probably new to them as well.

@lonewaer2 ай бұрын
He's not the only one to do these things, but he's probably the only one to do them ALL, and at such a high level. Exploring harmony to the point the big names of our generation think "wait up, this guy knows something I don't", enough for them to hit him up asking him about chords… The moment they do that, he becomes their equal at the very least. So he's at least a contender for the title, yes. This is a far tamer statement than comparing him to The Beatles like their music went so far above 5 to 6 different chords… it didn't, and that's exactly why they were popular, the music was nowhere near genius, but it was simple, accessible, so it became popular. I don't think anyone has it all like he does. Popularity is nice, but sorry the moment you start comparing him to The Beatles, musically, you lose the argument. In terms of popularity, sure, but musically, he's so far beyond them, he's a strictly better musician, singer, composer, instrumentalist. Anything musical, you name it, he's going to surpass anyone popular, really. Not liking his stuff is ok, and probably common, but don't go around making wild statements implying that The Beatles were better musicians.

It's so sad to see all these people either defending jacob to death or criticising him from head to toes. It's fine if you don't like his work or his personality, and it's also fine if you do. The truth is his music is not for everyone. But saying his music is objectively bad and cringe is no better than saying it's indisputably the best work of art ever produced. Just have common sense. The man is obviously a technical beast, but that doesn't mean he can please everybody. You can tell he just does what he wants. No one cares if you love him or hate him, but if you are going to give your opinion try to be somewhat respectful to others.
@janfyhrholdt27882 ай бұрын
Now you are criticizing the criticism of Jacob. So let me criticize your criticism of the criticism of Jacob. You complain that some defend him to death? Well, you have a point there. He could suffer if he is defended too much. He is overprotected and needs to be independent on his own. Seems that you also ask for "common sense", respect and empathy. Those are properties I and very few other people simply not have. I have 0% empathy, 100% disrespect, and last but not least 0% common sense. I think that would explain everything. But I am aware of, not only the freedom of religion, as I mentioned earlier, but also the freedom of expression. So, feel free to criticize my criticism of your criticism of the criticism of Jacob. BTW, speaking of criticizing him from "head to toes". Isn't his neck a little bit too long or is it just me?

I do admire him. And he's impossible to dislike. Very engaging and undeniably a joy to have in the world A common frustration for some listeners, including me - everything he does feels massively over engineered i.e. kitchen sink, and then some. Which dilutes he work, style over substance etc. I'd like to hear him do some songs and arrangements very simply, with a lot of space.
@MrTimg122 ай бұрын
From what I gather he spent a good decade in his room perfecting his craft and making music in his own style for himself. His four album journey through all that material and his collaborations are really an expression of that early musical life and a catharsis in a way. I'm no musician and I agree sometimes it does sound as if he's throwing everything, including the kitchen sink , into the music. I suspect that he needs to get this out of his head and onto paper as it were. He's only 29 and this is early JC . As he grows musically I suspect that he'll change again and perhaps his later work might be more spare if that's the correct term. That's the great thing about JC he's taking us on his musical journey and he doesn't know where that's leading him . Nevertheless I think it's a joy to join him on it.
@NmpK242 ай бұрын
As an experienced musician I have to disagree. His music is just not commercial enough for the UK 'charts' because he has strong jazz and classical influences which are not considered mainstream (in the UK that is) and even derided. However elsewhere he is far more appreciated and has won 8 grammys. Maybe he's happy doing that?

1. I don't like his singing (his range is limited and his vocals are absolutely nothing to write home about). 2. I don't like his cover versions (grotesquely inflated and self-indulgent, always absent of what made the originals beloved, I've never heard Collier play a good cover yet). 3. I don't think the wide-eyed 'boy in pajamas' image has much more credible mileage - Collier's almost 30, and the cringe is strong.

I’m a professional musician and educator and I can tell you Jacob is a rare musical talent and the work he produces is very difficult to do and highly time consuming. You have to be at a very high level of music ability to create the albums he’s created for the public even if not all the songs are original or repurposed. There is a great deal of complexity involved with his music and he shows great enthusiasm and positivity and collaboration with his approach, which is rare to see in musicians. People at this level are usually highly introverted. He deserves all the praise and acclaims he is getting because a great deal of work is involved for his productions, especially regarding its quality.
