I don't have a speech impediment but I feel like it would be so valid to say "I have a speech impediment." And leave it at that. If they feel bad after hearing that maybe they should.. maybe they were kind of intrusive in the way they asked and should think about it.

It's also so strange how the people he encountered seemed to not understand that accents happen because your first language has different phonetics. You don't have to be "from" somewhere to have an accent. All it takes is just your parents using their native tongue at home. When you ask someone where they're from because you think they have an accent and they say Nebraska you leave it at that. I'm sensing that the further questioning with "but where are you *really* from?" comes from awkwardness and them realising that the question is intrusive in itself. I don't have a speech impediment but I used to have an accent and I hated that question so much. Although it is funny to make them guess. Because my first language is Russian but I'm from Central Asia. People always try guessing some East Asian or South East Asian country based on how I look. And when I just repeat "wrong" at every attempt it becomes more and more awkward for them. And then we learn a big ol' painful lesson on racismTM or something in the end lol

I'm Asian and not American. So I ask this: But honestly, why? Calling PR a trash island isn't far from the truth when PR has a trash problem...openly...that people joke about. It was a roast comedian who was roasting. You remember what comedy is, right? It seems that it's very easy for people to say "White people so ____" or "America is so____" yet when people turn around and say something about PR it's suddenly bad? If something is off limits, everything is off limits and people need to stop saying negative things about EVERYONE, including white people and America. You're not in any danger. At all. You're not going to have your "rights" taken away from you. It's quite amazing to watch people be so brainwashed by main stream media. Americans have become quite overly sensitive, to use it as a cudgel to cry "oppression". It would seem that if the left doesn't want to feel uncomfortable in society, they should stop the spiteful rhetoric towards everyone else. The left is hideously racist and bigoted towards people who don't agree with them, yet I've found American conservatives to be very welcoming and have a sense of humor.

My son has a speech impediment and is in speech therapy (he's 4). I don't hear his speech impediment unless I'm specifically listening for it, but most people can barely understand him. I think when you listen to a person a lot, your brain just adapts to their speech patterns so you can understand them. I truly don't notice Jacob's speech impediment most of the time. I don't think it's because I'm an amazing person or anything, I think it's just because the human brain is great at understanding other people's speech patterns.

The strongest part of Jacob's impediment seems to be the pronunciation of "r" sounds. I had the same thing as a child (pronounced my rs very similar to how Jacob does). It is actually the most common speech impediment, especially for children. Most grow out of it naturally. My parents put me in speech therapy and that helped me figure out how to pronounce them. But there are still certain words that other people seem fine with but are difficult for me to get my mouth around hah. I can't believe people think it's an accent..... doesn't sound like an accent at all, just sounds like his unique way of speaking and pronouncing words.
@bananawitchcraftАй бұрын

Ah! I have a speech impediment, likely due to my autism, and I find it quite intrusive for people to ask about the way I talk (and yes, they often assume it's an accent.) I know it's just curiosity and they think they're making conversation, but it makes me even more self-conscious about my speech when people fixate on it.
@TheKatarinaGiselleАй бұрын
Work on building up your confidence surrounding your voice, and just tell those people “it’s my autism accent!” Like another girl suggesting on here. Sure, people might act embarrassed, but that isn’t on you..that is on them. They need the confidence to not be embarrassed and the confidence to say something kind like “well, Ali find your voice to be very unique and beautiful.” Which can be very hard to do when we are embarrassed (for anybody!) but when we take control of a situation with confidence we are pushing past our comfort zone, which always helps us grow as people! Plus, it puts the ball in your court in the social interaction, which pushes others to challenge themselves to respond in a better way. All of us struggle in these types of social interactions, and that’s okay! It’s but a blip in time in the long scheme of things! I hope you learn to love all of the things that make you you! And trust me, we fixate on our quirks *FAR MORE* than anybody else does! Everybody else is busy worried about their own things..they just might be better at hiding it or they have things that are more invisible/less tangible that they are dealing with. 💓💗🩷❤️

I'm an immigrant - have been for 15 years now, and people used to ask me that question A LOT. I was a teenager already traumatised with my whole situation and I loathed to be singled out. Now I don't have an accent anymore and when people learn I'm not originally from here they get all surprised asking where my accent went lol like leave me alone. And I know most people don't do that with bad intentions but it's just a very awkward conversation starter that even when I tried to be friendly never ended up becoming actually interesting.
@brockhampton3078Ай бұрын
@@glupik1234 Haha it totally makes sense how those kind of questions would get annoying! Your speaking mannerisms are natural to you so your former accent or lack of it are probably very dull subjects to talk about on your end. I understand that people are making small talk, but I would much rather chat about the weather than be obligated to give an explanation for how I speak to a complete stranger.

I don't have a speech impediment but I talk weird because I have autism. I am always getting asked what country Im from when I was born in the city I live (and Im white). They are like "no you have accent". Im just like "I do?" It makes me feel sooo awkward. I decided Im going to say "its my autistic accent" but I haven't been able to do it yet because I know they will feel awkward. They are usually just trying to be friendly. Its high too and I sound like a 3 year old on the phone. 😭 Edit: omg yes they have outright asked where my parents are from too when I say I was born here. My grandparents are from Poland and sometimes I say that and they are like that must be it..One time the person said "no thats not it, its like British or something". Its always customers at work or random people who talk to you at the bus stop who do it. Ive never had friends or family say I talk weird.
@TheKatarinaGiselleАй бұрын
I think you should totally respond with that! I’m autistic too, and a I think that is a great response! You can do it! Don’t feel scared or insecure either, say it with confidence and a smile and you can put them at ease when/if they react embarrassed. But hopefully they would just say, “well I think your voice is very unique and beautiful”. And leave it at that. I feel bad taking people off guard too, but sometimes it helps build my confidence because then the ball is in my court and a I just have to follow through with that confidence. Pushing ourselves past our comfort zone helps us grow! 💓💗🩷❤️ I know you can do it!
