Jacob Rees Mogg (and a lot of people in this comments section) doesn't seem to actually understand the problem the British government have with the Irish border and how it is holding up Brexit. The UK can't just say they are putting up no border controls, that contravenes WTO rules. So Britains options are as follows. 1) Northern Ireland (or the entire UK) stays in the Customs Union/Single Market, the Good Friday Agreement is upheld and everyone (almost) is happy. This should be the obvious solution. 2) The entire UK (including NI) leaves the Customs Union/Single Market and the British government have to erect a hard border in Ireland. But if they do that then they are breaking the Good Friday Agreement, an international agreement lodged with the UN. Good luck getting lucrative trade deals if the whole world knows Britain's word is useless and will break agreements when it suits them. 3) The entire UK (including NI) leaves the Customs Union/Single Market but the British government erects no border around Northern Ireland in an attempt to uphold the GFA. In this scenario this would contravene WTO rules and Britain would not be able to do trade deals with other WTO members (159 countries). There are of course countries who are not members of the WTO who the UK could still trade with like Iran, Sudan and Turkmenistan. I'm sure there are many lucrative deals to be had with those countries. So bottom line is the British government are going to have to make a decision on this issue and soon. The Irish border was and is a huge issue that is not easily resolved, it should have been considered before the EU referendum was even called, and certainly should have been a bigger discussion point in the lead up to the referendum.

Britain and Ireland won't be at war, leastways not in a physical sense anyway. If things get really bad there may be a breakdown in diplomatic relations. The real trouble will be in the North of Ireland. A hard border would create a situation where many nationalists and republicans would consider that to make the GFA null and void. At first there may be protests, marches and directed acts of civil disobedience along the border, particularly where any physical infrastructure was being installed. Undoubtedly the authorities would have to intervene and move protesters away from these sites, and perhaps even set up a cordon to keep people from getting anywhere near them at all. This would be potentially a volatile situation in it's own right, but in the presence of a political vacuum, which we're very close to at the moment, that could be the spark to trigger serious trouble.

There is no workable proposal yet to avoid a hard border in Northern Ireland. If we even hint that we are not checking the border for goods, WTO members will cause an uproar for unfair treatment tariffs-wise. The WTO has rules, we can't just tariff some countries and ignore others. We will be under hellfire legally. Such a move will further cripple the economic and diplomatic reputation of the country. The only way to solve the problem is by staying in a Customs Union and the Single Market.

Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, Lichtenstein, Monaco, and San Marino are all in one of these institutions and they aren't in the EU. Until a workable proposal is established then SM/CU membership should be the backstop.

Please correct me if I'm wrong as I haven't followed this issue very closely but most on the pro-EU side of the issue say that the referendum and the decision to leave the EU was because it was based on not liking free movement and not likely immigration. However, now it would seem that the popular opinion of the British is that they want to keep an open with Ireland but the EU is agaisnt free movement.

One reason I voted remain was that I was sure that the British Government would make a mess of these negotiations. So far nothing has changed my view. In these circumstances the fewer compromises made now the better. Drop out and start negotiations from there. There was always going to be an economic downside to Brexit in the short term.

How thorough are customs checks at border crossings? The reality is not very; it's simply impractical to open up every container; every van and lorry. So how difficult can it be to have a system that is at least as good. Insist that all vehicles crossing the boarder register their goods and pay their dues in advance of the crossings; impose serious penalties for the 'smuggling' of goods; and make regular random searches. (Read below an extract from 'Wired' on Electronic customs registration.) It's been 2 years since the Brexit vote and yet this determinedly remain Prime Minister has barely begun to answer the most basic of problems; she must go while there's still a glimmer of a hope to properly negotiate a beneficial exit. Electronic customs registration Passing through borders is increasingly becoming less reliant on paperwork, and the Irish border may be no exception. Both the UK and the EU are in the process of creating fully electronic customs systems; the UK is going to introduce a Customs Declaration Service (CDS) for goods entering and leaving the UK by the end of this year, and the EU's Customs Union Code says its "customs formalities are still in the process of being gradually transitioned to electronic systems." These electronic systems could enable quicker movement between different customs zones since - there is no time taken filling in forms. This could be used for anyone crossing the border and ease the flow of traffic.

Why is she asking what they think of each other? This is about facts and practicalities. The British don't want a hard border...the irish govt and EU are threatening it. The UK should just state its case and its up to the others. The ball should be put in their court and they then take the blame.

They have a fund invested in Dublin, like they have previously but have since created another one, at the behest of their investors, whose money they operate with and make money from. In managing Hedge Funds their role is to hedge their bets so diversifying where and how and in what their clients money is invested in. Some will be in Dublin and others are in London, Singapore, the USA etc..

SB13X No they did not have another fund in Dublin! His company only got there license last week from the Irish regulator! And the only reason for it is so that they can remain in the EU ! It's only a small fund by fund standards, 1.4 billion at the moment but its the principal of it! As far as he's concerned it's ok for normal people in the uk to be outside but people like him will still have the benifets of being in the EU! I wonder how many jobs will be moved to Dublin ? And how much tax he will NOT be paying in the uk! Is this the guy that brexiters really think should be their pm!😅

No one explained the problem. The farmer who talked about a lorry load of meal going across the border didn't say what his problem actually was. Surely the invoice for the meal would have to contain a duty item similar to a VAT item. Not a problem. Even less of a problem if the EU agrees on free trade with the UK as it should. Am I missing something or is it just the Irish not knowing what they want but being willing to fight over it?

He's makes a half day trip to NI to be able to say he was there. One less thing someone can throw at him in a debate. He didn't go to actually engage with the people because he doesn't care about the people. Like all Tory posh boys, he sees NI as a foreign country that must just be placated but is ultimately irrelevant. The DUP votes are handy though! No answer for the border issue beyond "there is no issue" Considering the contortions his PM is doing, I think there is an issue!

To look at this we must go back to the basics. Those who voted to leave the EU voted to end freedom of movement, therefore it's a waste of time trying to figure out how to avoid a hard border because in order to end freedom of movement between the EU and the UK, there MUST be a border between the Republic and the North that regulates those who go through it. I know geographically its a challenge as the border is very complicated, but what other ideas are there? If there were any better ideas, the British government and the EU would've negotiated it by now.
@garybarrett4881
@garybarrett4881 6 жыл бұрын
Its a mad riddle alright as Danny Dyer would say. There is 1 better idea. Its the one proposed by the Irish government: that NI stays inside the customs union. NOT, I stress, leave the UK. Only that any customs checks be done at the NI airports and ports. Its the least worst of a bad set of options and has the not insignificant advantage of being a fraction of the cost of a hard border to operate. Even the NI Unionist community is set against any hard border and likely would support this. The DUP are very badly out of step with what their voters want: news.sky.com/story/northern-ireland-unsupportive-of-no-deal-brexit-study-shows-11425335

Since the North and South have differing tax tariffs on fuel,tobacco and alcohol,a border already exists ! Both sides monitor it and attempt to stop smuggling . People do hop across the border to shop .In the same way UK booze cruised to France. The only reason for the backstop ,was to take a politically sensitive problem and take a confrontational approach to stall proceedings .Rather than apply the same approach that exists now .As the man said borders have come and gone ,but ultimately come down to the local community .Not some Euro state far,far away on a different continent.
