So the guys who wrote the songs are Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, they also wrote the songs for la la land (they won an oscar for city of stars), the greatest showman, the new song from the Aladdin live action and they also wrote another musical called dogfight. They met doing musical theater at the university of Michigan and they decided to write the songs for dear evan hansen when they were talking about their high school experiences and Benj started talking about this girl who died when he was in school and how everyone suddenly wanted to have a connection with her and how much people felt the need to connect to someone who died even if they didn't actually know the person. Ben was casted pretty early on because he had once auditioned for dogfight but he was too young for that at the time. So Benj and Justin already knew him from that and from when he did the book of mormon on broadway. He started his jorney with the show doing workshops in 2014 and his last curtain call was in november of 2017.

I read somewhere that that 1/8th note that goes through the song is a representation of Evan's anxiety (i believe it's on an a as well), i might be wrong but if so thats a cool element of the symbolism behind the song

I believe it’s also a motif that represents the pace of social media through people’s lives. The pre show follows a social media feed and people are all running back and forth isolated but physically together which is the point of the show. It drops out when he talks about falling in a forest.

Excited you're doing Dear Evan Hansen! When you're done, you should check out Come From Away! It's seriously one of my favorite musicals mostly because the story is so beautiful (and it's also hilarious, which is unexpected for a show related to the events of 9/11). They are filming it and releasing it this fall similarly to how they did Hamilton, I believe. Very different music. More dialog than singing, but really cool Newfoundland-style band!

The song was written by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul. Both also wrote music for “The Greatest Showman” and “LaLa Land” I love this song in particular because it’s touches on how sometimes we watch these lives through social media these happy moment, events, milestones and often feel left out. We’re “tap tap tapping on the glass” of our phones waving at digitally with our likes and comments hoping someone to notice and reply back.

It will be the first to start up when they reopen Broadway, so that a possible ‘hook’ to review it. It was originally a folk show and concept album that took a very long road to Broadway. The songwriter is natively a guitarist which is a rare thing in Broadway type shows.

From what I’ve watched of his videos, he typically focuses more on the musical elements rather than the lyrics! It’s more his area of expertise since he’s a musician himself so he seems to be more passionate about the actual music production ☺️ I personally really like hearing him break down the technical music aspects rather than the lyrics because I can kind of decipher those myself, but I wouldn’t be as well versed in the music side of things!
