In the next 31 minutes Lionel Favre, Product Design Director of Jaeger-LeCoultre, will give some insights about the new Master Control collection he and his team designed.
MASTER CONTROL
In 2020, Jaeger-LeCoultre relaunches the collection, drawing inspiration from the classic round watches of the 1950s, such as the Futurematic, PowerMatic and Memovox models, and adding a dash of 21st-century flair.
Since it was introduced in 1992, Jaeger-LeCoultre’s Master Control collection has been defined by technical rigor and stylistic restraint, its constant evolution imbued with the Maison’s deep respect for tradition and constant quest for innovation. Rather than paying homage to a single historic reference, Jaeger-LeCoultre presents a range of timepieces featuring some of its most emblematic complications. Designed for the urban sophisticate, every element of the Master Control line has been restyled. Jaeger- LeCoultre’s designers have harnessed and modernized the Maison’s classical design codes to create a refined yet entirely contemporary aesthetic that highlights the collection’s complications.
When launched in 1992, the Master Control line was the first of Jaeger-LeCoultre’s collections to benefit from its pioneering ‘1000 Hours Control’ certification - which inspired the collection’s name. A demanding process that tests the entire cased-up watch (not just its movement), it set a new benchmark when introduced and has continually evolved in response to technological advances, to remain one of the watch industry’s most stringent testing protocols.
Naturally, with this background and the Maison’s long history of technical innovation, the relaunch of Master Control is not simply a stylistic exercise. The Manufacture’s engineers have comprehensively revised and updated all of the movements, increasing power reserves to as much as 70 hours and enhancing overall performance and reliability. Like all Jaeger-LeCoultre timepieces, the Master Control watches carry an 8-year warranty in addition to the 1,000 Hours Control certification.
With its 40-millimetre diameter, outwardly sloping bezel and dynamically curved lugs, the new Master Control case exudes a relaxed and understated elegance - timeless yet absolutely contemporary. Satin-brushing on the case-sides is complemented by the polished bezel, crowns and lugs. Refined details abound, including bas-relief engravings on the back bezel and a sapphire crystal case-back to reveal the finely finished and decorated movements.
On the dials, Jaeger-LeCoultre’s designers have reinterpreted the Maison’s classical codes in a streamlined and modern style, in order to highlight each model’s complications. The applied indexes add refinement, their elongated triangular shape echoed by the Dauphine hands. Uniting the collection, sunray brushing animates the silvery-white background color, a blue central seconds hand adds a subtle pop of color and, according to the model, blued subdial hands further accentuate the complications.
Master Control Date 5800 Euro excluding VAT
Master Control Calendar 9500 Euro excluding VAT
Master Control Geographic 10.500 Euro excluding VAT
Master Control Chronograph Calendar 12.500 Euro excluding VAT
With the goal of improving reliability, power reserve and long-term performance, Jaeger-LeCoultre’s engineers have comprehensively revised and re-engineered Calibre 899, the high-performing pillar of the Master Control collection. The improvements, which have been incorporated into the entire range of Master Control calibres, include a silicon escapement, a redesigned barrel and various energy-saving enhancements.
Also the straps have been re-worked for the new collection. To complement the timeless informality of the steel cases, Jaeger-LeCoultre’s designers have chosen the soft, matt finish of Novonappa calf leather in tan. Produced by the finest tannery in France, through a vegetable-based tanning process that retains the natural variations of the hides, Novonappa gains a distinctive patina over time. Thanks to a Presto Spring lug attachment and a simple clip for removing and refitting the deployant buckle, the Novonappa straps can be quickly changed, without the need for any tool.
MASTER GRANDE TRADITION GRANDE COMPLICATION
As the latest addition to this series, the new Master Grande Tradition Grande Complication harnesses more than a century and a half of accumulated expertise. This masterpiece of mechanical engineering incorporates two of the most romantic yet technically challenging complications in horology - a minute repeater and a celestial vault. The complex mechanism is further elevated by an orbital flying tourbillon. This limited edition of eight pieces each in rose gold and in white gold features a new aesthetic that reaffirms Jaeger- LeCoultre’s mastery of the artistic crafts.
Master Grande Tradition 340.000 Euro excluding VAT

Technical update! The lug to lug distance of the new Master Control case of Jaeger-LeCoultre is 47,67 mm. The case diameter is 40,025 mm to be precise ... In-between the lugs 20 mm. Only the thickness varies ...

Thanks Alex, I knew we could count on you to keep us one step ahead of tomorrow's new releases and I'm you picked JLC for the preview. Pure and classic are the best way to describe these new releases. They grow on you slowly at first but after a few minutes inspection, you realize how good the design is. I've been a big fan of the Polaris but after looking at these, the choice is harder. I'm glad they're heading in this direction. Thanks again, tres bien!

Reverso is a watch for a minority because it is rectangular watch. The majority buys round watches and therefore it makes sense for Jaeger-LeCoultre to focus on round watches. Anyhow I don’t see the need for new Reverso watches since the choice is good...

While I was disappointed by the Polaris line a couple of years ago, JLC really hit it out of the park with the reworked Master Control models. It was kind of overdue to bring the calibres to modern standards with extended power reserve. The work they did on the design is fantastic. The Geographic and the Calender both look much cleaner now. In terms of the three hand model I am still a big fan of the original 1994 version that will always remain in my collection. My new favourite in the Master Control series is the Chronograph Calendar. It is absolutely stunning both in terms of functionality and design. To me it's one of the most beautiful JLC models of all time and will become a grail watch for many people.

I sincerely hope that there, for a very long time, will be continuity at Jaeger-LeCoultre now. To many CEOs in only a short period of time and therefore of course always some changes in direction/design/style... What a brand needs is continuity! The next Jaeger-LeCoultre -icon that must be put back on its throne is the Reverso!

Jaeger-LeCoultre’s design language is beautiful. So simple, elegant, and sporty. Amazing attention to simple detail. I want the simple Master Control date, it’s on my list of next watches. I was worried about the bigger 40mm size, but it looks like the bezel and lugs are smaller than on the older model. This makes it wear more like a 38-39mm with the thinner height. So far the best release of 2020 by any watchmaker. Very excited about these pieces. JLC continues to show they are and always have been on the the best.

I’m in love with the new Master Control Calendar. Love the new power reserve & jumping date A modern watch needs absolutely a power reserve of +/- 70 hours. When you have a watch-collection (meaning when you have several watches) : you can change a watch Friday for the weekend & put it Monday again on for the new workweek without setting. Question: Nowhere I can find info if it is a deployment buckle strap or a tang buckle… ? I absolutely prefer deployment buckles !!

Thanks for this fascinating interview. Great to hear Lionel talk about his watches. Such beautiful watches. I look forward to trying a Chronograph Calendar on the wrist in 2021. I'll be able to tell then if the 40mm wears too big. A risk with a silver dial and thin case (though mitigated by complications). My Master sector dial chronograph wears well at 40mm, but it has a thicker case and sector dials reduce perceived size. I certainly like the cognac strap, but I would take a spare black strap for the city! As for the pronunciation of 'Jaeger'... I cycled from the Vosges into Alsace and thought I was in Germany. Therefore, for me: 'Yay-ger' would seem appropriate - a clearly germanic name. But, of course, I get the sensitivity considering the history of the region! Pfff, we'll be onto O-mega, oh-Megga, oh-Meega next..The watches are still great!
@WatchAdvisor
@WatchAdvisor 4 жыл бұрын
James thanks for sharing! Don't forget that the 40 mm also enable a better readability ... Too small sizes bear the risk that all indications get pretty small... That discussion about how to pronounce names correct will of course never end... Already in German we pronounce words differently, depending where we come from... But I stick to the German way of pronouncing Jaeger and I with pleasure let the Frenchies claim this it is not true 😉 Cheers my friend!

Thanks for bringing the new movements. I like the Geographic one but the mechanism has a concept defect that the date was dictated by the main / local time but not the small window / home time. For a travel watch, if I travel to a different time zone say from NYC to Paris, I would like to instantly know what time and date it is in Paris and just by turning the crown at 10 O'clock. However, as the date won't change by doing this, I have to adjust the main time to be the Paris time, meanwhile losing the correct reference of the small window time because that will also change as I adjust the main time. Then again I need to adjust the small window time to its correctly original reference, and then turn the crown at 10 O'clock to set the time zone to NYC as my home time. This entire process is complicated and totally lost the travel watch's real purpose and usage.
@ProCelestialEmpire
@ProCelestialEmpire 4 жыл бұрын
My humble suggestion to fix it is to enable the independent setting of local time hour without affecting the home time. Also, my above comment is based on the JLC's previous version of the Geographic model. If current version has already changed the mechanism, it will be great and I revoke my above comment.

The addition of minute markers 2.What looks to be a larger crown. 3. French writing on dial.4. JLC logo on date pointer.5. Applied logo. There are some things I don’t like as much but that is neither here nor there. It seems ther has been an attempt to make the references slightly less formal. A. Lange & Söhne, IWC and Jaeger-LeCoultre do have a common past before they got bought by Richemont in 2000.
