If his parents went to Canada with nothing in their pockets, they may illegally went to Canada. According to Liu’s another interview, his parents told him, China was full of poverties. It would be disappointing if his parents blamed the newly founded China just to make excuses for their illegal travel to Canada. Family education convinced Liu to be shamed of who he really is and where they came from. Apart from politics, a person does not identify with his own identity, parents' education has a great impact, if they look down on themselves, who will respect them?

How old are you? Do you know the real history? My wife came over to study in the US at the same time. It was all legal and she only had $40 USD in her pocket. Her family had to borrow money for her to make the trip. China was able to offer a very limited number of student visas to study abroad. All education systems teach limited history, but in a free thinking society you can find out more for yourself without restrictions or tight government censorship around truths.

Now he's probably the most successful under-40 Chinese born actor in the world cause he made it in the only place that matters. Hollywood! He is Chinese by Birth, but he's successful because he's Canadian.
