This kind of problems are for me the classic nightmares. They affect the aesthetic and the functionality of the cabin comfort. I am just waiting for that lightning to strike because I know that for my F-Type it’s just a question of time. Your British calm and patience are essential in order to succeed. Bravo!

First, thanks to MrGB and Alex, whoever you are for sharing your experience. Also, thanks to Dan Edmund for the tip on just lifting the unit up from the front and out after all six screws are removed from the top. You are correct. Just remember to disconnect the wire connector from the lower front of the unit. It has a small tab on top that has to be depressed before removing. I have a few tips for speeding up the overall replacement process. Before you start, have a good little torx set with a T120, a very small low ratchet with a short extension and a small plastic pry bar and puddy knife. Have a short narrow magnet to fish the Torx 120 headed screws out of the four holes around the speaker. I lost my torx head in one of the holes. Once the unit is out the cover can be removed from the underside (if needed) by removing four T 125 head screws. My new unit came without the cover. When replacing the unit, reconnect the front wire, lower the rear of the unit near the wind screen pushing it in as far as it will go and then lower the front. The screw holes should line up. I installed the two front torx screws first. If your torx head isn't magnetized, put a dab of plumbers puddy on it to hold the four rear screws until you get them started. Tighten everything, replace the moldings and you should be good to go.

Thank you for video, it gave me the confidence to go ahead! I found the following: - No need to unclip the panel at back carrying the solar sensor, the vent hinges fit underneath that and so vent can be removed and refitted easily. - I did the mods and the vent no longer got stuck but operation was still jerky so I had a second go as follows - Easier to take apart if vent is removed when in the ‘up position’, I pulled out the connector when the car ignition was on and the climate set to vent ‘always open’ - I unscrewed the motor so I could test smooth operation fully up and down before the vent was refitted and reconnected, with it in place this is not possible - I hadn’t removed enough material from the spindle bearing surfaces so used a Dremel to sand down evenly and carefully - I took a apart both ends of each of the cam lever pairs and drilled out the holes x4 slightly - Refitted and now perfectly smooth operation!

I am intrigued how this issue is more apparent with later models. I have a MY2015 Type R and used as a daily driver I have had no issues with these vents, though expecting it. I wonder if the molding jigs are becoming 'slightly' worn as more & more get manufactured and the differing tolerances now with the whole assembly of movement is becoming an issue. Nice fix though and is very satisfying to do this yourself. Quite surprised at how low a new one was in price, with all respect. Thanks. Nice shout outs to Alex!
@MrGB_UK Жыл бұрын
That’s a good shout, with the tooling jigs. I couldn’t believe it when mine broke. The car has done 25k miles and is 5 years old. Not enough for things to start breaking, IMO. I was as surprised as you, with the cost of the new part. After the rear window surrounds we’re so much, I was expecting a lot more Happy driving and thanks for watching and commenting!

@@MrGB_UK I got a 2013 F-Type and it hit me. Unfortunately, your vid came 12 months too late, so I had to pay a good 400 Euros for getting it fixed with a new part. What a waste!
@danedmund5504 Жыл бұрын
When I did mine I found it is not necessary to remove the panel nearest the windscreen with the sensor in it. After removing the main vent screws simply raise the front edge and pull towards you and the whole unit will unclip from the sensor panel while in situ. To replace just push back in firmly and the vent flap hinge axle will clip back into the sensor panel. Also rather than sandpaper the holes, use an appropriate size drill to remove a little material, much faster. Thanks for video, wouldn't have attempted job otherwise and it now works flawlessly.

Hi I’ve stripped and eased all the pivots and greased they were pretty stiff which was good news, only problem now is the vent still doesn’t open fully it seems like the mechanism runs out of travel before fully lifting I’ve stripped it again numerous times to try to figure out how to get the full movement but still no good - any ideas or is this now proving the unit is faulty ? Cheers

Any easy fix on doors not latching after opening in freezing weather. I.e you pull the door handle, the handle goes back in position to close the door, but the cable seems to have frozen in position. So the door bounces off the frame/latch, because it thinks you've got the door handle pulled open.
@MrGB_UK Жыл бұрын
I can’t say that I’ve experienced that one. The car doesn’t go out in the freezing weather. Have you tried de-icer or cool water?

@@andymoran3837 I'm hit by this on the passenger door. It's hardly ever used, so I've been able to ignore that, but if there is an easy fix (greese and more greese, I guess), I'd appreciate to be pointed to a DYI vid that shows that - or hear what part to greese. @MrGb_UK you don't happen to have some work on the doors scheduled, do you?

Another note, what I do to keep the vent from popping up and down every time I start the car, set the heat to only come out the defrost or floor and then the vents stay down. Saves a little wear and tear on it and I prefer heat coming out the defrost and floorboard anyway.
@MrGB_UK Жыл бұрын
There is a setting in the menu of the screen. You can choose what that vent does in a number of ways, if I remember correctly

The gremlins with JLR products from the last 10 years definitely put me off replacing my 07 XKR that has run almost faultless in 2 yrs of ownership. Shame as the Ftype, XJ and Fpace are all very desirable cars aesthetically.

I think i would have took it out and just sprayed some WD40 first before i went to fileing down parts and then try it and if it works grease parts with silcon
@MrGB_UK Жыл бұрын
I hear you. WD40 might not necessarily be the best lubricant, but as you say, silicone could have done it. Tbh I followed the guide to the letter and it’s worked well, but certainly no harm in starting easy and building up from there. Thanks for watching and commenting!

Sure would be nice if there was a way to just program the car and tell it you want the vents to just stay open all the time. Certainly what I would do if it was possible, and I was fortunate enough to own this vehicle. The dash looks better and cleaner with the vents down, but I mean who is just standing there looking at the dash when not driving. You know, after the novelty of a vent going up and down wears off after the 5th time it just becomes a problem waiting to drop….lol…As neat as the whole thing is, the realities of it are not so neat ;-0 This issue would not prevent me from buying the car, but the whole feature is a bit silly overall. Is there any truth at all to the newer cars being updated to have this not happen?
