After watching Marks video, over a year ago, I bought my 2010 XJ (X351) LWB, 3.0L portfolio, and I am so happy with my fantastic car. It is simply the best car I have ever driven. A point to note, on a car of this age, only ever go to a Jaguar dealership for fixed price servicing, which is reasonable in cost and available for cars over three years old! For all other jobs like replacing the timing belt, go to a Jaguar Specialist, there are plenty around, and most will charge half of what a dealership charges, saving £ hundreds. Incidentally, this is what Jaguar say about replacing belts on XF or XJ 3.0L D engines: Replace timing belt every 112,000 miles or 10 years. Replace high-pressure fuel pump drive belt every 144,000 miles or 9 years.

Nice video my friend. A good walkaround the car and I'm looking at getting either a Portfolio or Supersport this year. The Supersport (probably due to insurance and tax) depreciates like a bomb which is great as a 2nd hand buy. As long as you can live with the costs and petrol consumption. Anyway, some bits of information people may like to know as I've been searching around on forums and second hand guides. The sunroof issue existed on the cars up until it was fixed properly on the 2013 models. Like you say it's the frame moving in the chassis and it creaks. Most were fixed by dealers under warranty under great expense using rubber mounts and other fixes. Next issue, the sunroof rails on the earlier cars rot badly. The roof slides across a steel rail, as the paint wears away the bare metal is exposed and it can rust. So check this on any XJ you inspect. Again it was addressed on the 2013 cars, otherwise you'll see on some early cars they have nylon strips over the rails and they have been repainted underneath. In some extreme cases the entire mechanism is replaced which is a huge job (the entire roof section has to be removed), costing thousands. I hope nobody ever silicone's them shut though, that would look awful, I would rather properly lubricate them once or twice a year as part of maintenance. The next biggest issue on the earlier cars are the buttons. Not an issue unique to Jaguar as others have suffered in the past as well. The buttons on the 1st gen cars have a subtle rubberised finish on them. Unfortunately this rots and peels away. Covering the buttons in a sticky mess. Like the sunroof mechanism most of the cars had all their switchgear replaced under warranty by angry owners. Again all sorted by the time the 2013 cars were released. As you mention the first generation cars had a slowish display but having seen you use it, I can live with that. Some owners replaced it with the 2013 model but due to the way the display and software work some functions are lost, so I would prefer just to stick with the original. The last point which I hope none of us have to deal with is the bodywork. Aluminium is not the easiest metal to work with and in most cases any small ding in the body panel requires a new panel to be fitted and blended in, aluminium is brittle and doesn't bend back easily. Which means big bodywork bills and high insurance. However any aluminium bodied car suffers from this. You tend to see quite a few CAT D cars for sale because I think the insurance companies would rather right the car off rather than pay the enormous expense to repair them. I know this all sounds horrible but in fairness looking at all the various forums the modern XJ is a very reliable car. Very few electrical issues and cars with 150,000 miles on them are still going strong. A final point about the wheel nuts. I've always believed that using air tools on wheel nuts is just crazy. They are too powerful and obviously are used for quickness. I've lost count of the number of times friends of mine had sheered nuts on their cars simply because they were done up so damn tight by the tyre centre or car dealer. So whenever I get new tyres now I always borrow the 2nd car and take the wheels in the back of the car, just a personal opinion of course but I do like to be able to take my wheels off occasionally! lol. I've been to the Jaguar factory when they were making the older XJ and XK cars and even they finish the wheel nuts off with a torque wrench not high powered air tool. Anyway, rant over. Nice video and glad you enjoy your XJ Portfolio.

@andrewharper42966 жыл бұрын
@@marksavage No problem my friend. Just information I've picked up whilst searching around. Like a lot of cars though sometimes it's always best to get the newest you can afford. All cars suffer from new model niggles. Sometimes it takes a 2nd gen facelift by the maker to cure the problems permanently. The XJ is pretty well sorted, but that sunroof creaking is most likely the one thing that will drive pre-2013 owners the most crazy. I'm assuming you buy your six tubs of vaseline online to avoid any strange looks in Boots...haha :) Glad you enjoy the car. Really nice example.

Mark, thanks for the review. I own a 10 plate which I picked up in 2014 with 20k miles on the clock and its an absolute delight to drive. The only thing I feel I should highlight is the fact that if you are not going to use it often, invest in a Ctek battery charger because you will be needing it as the battery drains quickly. Alternatively you can also turn off the light settings / mirror etc from automatic to manual as this saves battery power. :)

Just bought a 3-year out of lease XJL for just 25% of its original retail on the road price, replacing my faithful 13-year old Chrysler 300c. Without question or exception, the Jaguar is THE best car I have ever owned in my 55 years of driving, which started with a mini van!. Don't wait until you retire - like me! - before treating yourself to one of these magnificent beasts, particularly with JLR's plans to move to an electric model in future. A real head-turner, an absolute joy to drive, easy on fuel and road tax, heavy on insurance, which I knew, high on sheer luxury and I've hardly begun to explore its gadgets and gizmos. Build quality is exceptional so I fully expect the Jaguar to be driven behind my funeral! I'd be hard pushed to find anything remotely close to replacing it.

Brute force, interior and exterior design to die for, less complicated, good reputation. Less luxury, less amount of toys, but I rather can think of it as a long term partner. I love the Jags! Lovely motor, I hope it'll serv you well.

Great video, though I have never experienced bad wheel bolts or a creaky sunroof, I did, however, have bad TPMS on 2 wheels. They corrode but Jaguar didn't cover it under warranty which was a pain. You forgot to mention they have double glazed windows, you can see when you roll them down that there are 2 bits of glass rather than 1. If you hold the race flag by the handbrake, that gives you a bit more umph and that's how you get the dials to go red, you still have all the traction control on etc. and the snowflake/winter mode turns them blue and makes it harder to accelerate.
@marksavage6 жыл бұрын

Nice motor, when these come down a bit more I’ll certainly add them to the list. These are much more me than Germans of similar age. 50mpg on a run and enough power to be useful, what’s not to like? That sunroof thing is pretty annoying though, I wonder if there are XJ’s out there with no sunroof?

No if they snapped it its the tyre house or garages fault, they are responcible for sorting that outbshould not cost you. I always copper slip my wheel nuts or graphite grease. Stops this sticking issue. It thebstickingvthat cause the fatigue and snap
@andrewharper42966 жыл бұрын
Yeah I agree matey (see my comments above). They use air tools for quickness but they are very over powered and I'm not surprised they break the nuts on the hubs. I've had my mother's car come back from a service once and when I had to remove the front wheel I had to use a 2m breaker bar to undo the nuts and get the wheel off. If you were stuck in the middle of nowhere and had a flat tyre the small wrench in the boot would be useless to you. As you say proper maintenance with copper crease is also a great thing to do as well.

so many bmw's on the road and jag is so much nicer and really stands out, as for the inside the jag is way better that a sea of black plastic ! I was getting 47mpg on about £90 to fill but with fuel prices and all it will be different well worth a test drive

@@marksavage We just bought an XF prestige and I have to say that I'm a little disappointed. I like the look of the exterior but the interior is a bit lacking. My biggest gripe is the layout of the controls on the doors. I think the window and mirror controls should be where the lock controls are and vice versa. Why put the lock control within arms reach and the window controls so far up on the door. The car automatically locks when you pull off and automatically unlocks when you open the door- it doesn't 'have to be within immediate reach. You will use the window controls more so why not put them where you don't have to reach as far on the door. Another gripe is legroom. I'm 6'1" and I have to adjust the seat all the down and all the way back in order to keep my head from hitting the ceiling. When I do that, I have nowhere to rest my arm. I'm too low and too far back to use the door's armrest. So, I will eventually wear out the center console. And finally, the navigation- it requires too many steps to put in driving directions. Just give me a text box where I can put in the directions, like Google map. Needless to say, we might be trading soon.

Im currently driving the x308 (2001 3.2 V8 executive) and are now contemplating for what after. Have U driven the petrol version and how does they compare?
@marksavage5 жыл бұрын
no not from this model , I did drive the old shape petrol but to be honest the diesel version is so smooth with the twin turbo for boost they drive so well and once moving you couldn't tell its a diesel any way and you gain so much on mpg, on a run I was getting 48 mpg around town 30 ish and with the price of fuel here in the UK running the petrol version i'd be finding petrol station all the time lol by the time this government finish it will be £10 a litre £25 to go in to town and not allowed to drive them any where any way !!!

The audio system looks great. Anyone know why they stopped putting audio systems into these cars? My 2016 XE only has the low bit rate USB input.

i guess due to cost and the xe is the baby of the jag family and they just like to sell the basic unless you up the spec they try and get you to buy more lol, money money money

Mark, I love the car but just about every mechanic I have spoken with in Las Vegas has told me to stay away due to electrical issues as well as others. The prices for used XJ's in America are fantastic and I hate SUV's and really would like to have the XJ but want to avoid any reliability issues. I currently have a Lexus and nothing ever goes wrong.
