EJ, I like seeing you enjoy cars that are fun to drive. Showing us how to maintain them helps keep down the cost of ownership. I can’t wait to see how the FIAT works out. I had one back in the early 80s, it was a used 124 Sport. I worked on it many weekends to keep it on the road, but it was fun to drive. By far it was the easiest car to change front brake pads on. The only wrench you needed was one to get the wheel off. The caliper was held on by Cotter Pins on the slide block. A screwdrivers was all you needed and in 10 minutes you had new pads. With a Monza muffler they would sound awesome. I miss that car. Keep up the good work.

Bought a low mileage 2003 Jaguar XJR (X350) a few months ago. Only 42,000 miles. Still, had some maintenance. New oil and filter in the transmission, new pressure valve for the airconditioning, reconditioning of the suspension compressor (the seller paid for it), new hood lock, regular maintenance (oil flush, oil filter and new air filters) and a set of Michelin tires. Also had the front lights polished. At this point, the car is almost in mint condition.

EJ'S GARAGE indeed it feels like a new one! However, the previous owner didn’t do any maintenance since 2017, so I had to catch up. I have the car maintained by a Jaguar specialist (he worked at a Jaguar dealer previously) in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. He has a lot of knowledge and spare parts. The pressure valve in the airconditioning normally costs around EUR 600 to replace. He offered me a used one for EUR 120.

EJ is incorrect about the 2004-2008 jaguar. In fairness, it is true that if you went to a dealer to change all 4 air shocks with OEM Bilstein air springs, it would cost roughly that amount. However, this video came out only a year ago and there are coil-conversion kits for the 2004-2008 that are $1000 for all 4 shocks (I converted mine). Other than that, the 2004-2008 V8s are VASTLY more reliable and less risky than the 4.0L V8 from 1998-2003 which are known to be ticking time bombs - they had nikasil-lined cylinder walls which would deteriorate, cause the car to lose compression, not to mention the flimsy timing-chain tensioners which would inevitably fail and mechanically total the car - that’s why this generation are cheap - people who know, avoid these cars. On the other hand, XJ6 from 1995-1997 are much more highly sought after because they are one of the most bulletproof drivetrains ever built. If you want a jag…avoid the 98-03 XJ8 but by all means, invest in a 2004-2008 or a 95-97 XJ6

@@ejsgarage hi EJ - yes, I bought the most expensive kit for and it was $1300 but $1000 is about the average - strutmasters and Arnott are the primary ones, but suncore and some cheap (probably chinese) no-name brands are out there for $400 - so it’s not as big of an issue as it used to be, unless someone insists on keeping the air suspension.
@Gojo_Gaming559
@Gojo_Gaming559 2 жыл бұрын
So the suspension kit sounds great. I just learned my car had air suspension. Just purchased a 2004 XJ8 recently. Beautiful vehicle. I didn’t know about XJ6 was better than 8. Although I haven’t had problems, but heard the air suspension doesn’t last forever. Understandable. And my eye popped out when he said 7grand.But I’m no mechanic. Plus I’m a female. I would have to have mechanic switch out. I’ll have to ask him about this.

Always adored the XJ-8's and their brethren for their finesse with auto design. Considering selling one of my 64' Galaxie 500 to purchase a Vanden Plas that's very near here, but was frightened off when they were new by a 9,000 USD annual maintenance cost. Now that I've owned a few European Make's, I haven't the fear of the past. The only major woe mentioned has been the timing chain/guides & tensioner's that have plagued the 4- liter, V-8 engines. The owner drove it till it died, and can't or won't say much about its service history, so I'm expecting the worst, but at $900 usd, I'm only getting a parts car with a title anyways. Thanks for your time and experiences.

My pleasure. I really like the Van Den Plas. My Jaguar XJR is more reliable than my new BMW M6. The M6 would stop running if small parts of the engine like sensor breaks. My XJR is still going even without the ASC and ABS. 😀

@@ejsgarage the Vanden Plas were always lauded as a gentry car in the day, but I had only wrenched on the odd MG, Triumph, and a sole Austin Healey, there was some fear of a Jaguar's complexities. Always admired the E28 & E30, and tried in vain to buy them, but after the E34 & E36 following the divorce, I nearly swore off the marque until my E39 which has been parked more than driven for its faults. No harm done really, it will run well enough once the crank and cam sensors are out and replaced, but as you have said. I'm hoping to turn some wrenches on a British-built car again, and with luck I may soon will. Thank you for your time and wonderful reply. Very best wishes again my friend.

Great review! I bought my 1999 XJ8L new and been using it as my daily commute car even now. It has an abusive 121k miles stuck in commute traffic. When I first saw the XJ8L, I had to get it. Reminded me too much of a limo. Finally luxury sedan will overkill leg room in the back. Timing chain tensioners, yes changed that myself. Was not fun. ATF fluid, yes I change them. Thanks ZF for misleading everyone that it's good for life. Overall, still runs well. Had it repainted the same color and it still turns alot of heads. Classic design.

Go for the 2005 - 2009 XJ8's... ALL aluminum bodys shed 500 lbs from the Steel 2004's and the 4.3 V8 doesnt have the Timing tensioner issue to blow up on you. Better Trannys too. You wouldn't believe me if I tell you I avg. 24 -26 mpg Town/ Hwy. with a V8 ! Bought mine 6 yrs ago from Palm Beach with 42k on it and I"m 3rd owner. I live in NY and the N.E roads have torn up that beautiful British suspension ( designed for better European roads!) SO yes.. a few repairs here and there but not difficult to work on if your a backyard mechanic. Converted Air ( 90k) to Coil springs , and New Radiator / ALternator but she still runs beautifully at 130k now. IMPORTANT. You'll hear the ZF transmissions are sealed for life BUT you can still drain / FLush the tranny's and replace the Oil pan /Filter ! THIS IS highly recommended before you reach 100k.. .which I did.. shifts beautifully still. Good luck to all... I've owned 29 cars over the years and this is Still my fave. MAKE SURE you join a Jag CLub or Forum if you take the plunge. The Advice on them is worth its weight in GOLD. cheers Geo G

I purchased the 01 Vanden Plas. Its not an SC. It has 236k. It drives nice but needs suspension. I filled it with good gas and changed the oil. It will need tires. I paid $2360. I do like it. The body is very nice. The interior is nice considering its age. I ordered frint shocks, upper balljoints and outrr tie rod ends. And I ordered replacement side badge and Vanden us trunk badge which are missing.

82,000 is pretty low miles for a 2000 XJR. Make sure the engine is good, have a mechanic run an inspection. The ASC/ABS is probably shot like mine but the car will run just fine.

It is the traction control. I don't really meed it since I don't drive like a maniac. It prevents the car from a tail spin if you floor the gas. Dodge Viper SRT doesn't even come with one.

Old cars will break and we have to have some savings to fix them. My Jaguar XJr is a weekend and leisure car, so it has less wear and tears than a daily driver car. If you worry about the cost of repairs, it is better to stay away from Jag because it can get expensive.

@@neptune787 .... Once Ford bought them up reliability and build quality improved. I've had a 2008 XJR for 4yrs and a 2006 Vanden Plas for 6yrs and never had any trouble at all from either of them. As long as they are maintained regular they should see 300k mls. I did have to replace a window switch on the XJR but it was a cheap fix as it is the same as the mustang item. Nice thing about the 2004/2008 is the whole car apart from the subframes is constructed from alloy, 2004 XJR weighs less than 4000lbs. Jags are brilliant cars !
