Jaguar XK8 Center Console Removal

How to remove the center console on your XK8. This is necessary to get to the back of the radio.

Great info but there was no mention that the console is clipped in above the heater controls.When pulling my console out I damaged the surround that holds in the heater controls, stereo etc.

+Adrian Barr I don't think mine was clipped in there. Thanks for the tip, though. Hopefully other XK8 owners will read your comment and be careful when removing it. Hi I just noticed your reply as I need to remove my console yet again. I would say add the comment just before you pull the console out. Also if people are changing bulbs I recommend all bulbs are changed.

Thank you!! Saved me ££££'s I wouldn't have found how to get those rear screws out near where your speaker is without your help. Only thing was, shame the PC was so far from the car, I walked about a mile going from car to PC and back!! (I'm not Sally- wife's account Ha Ha!)

Just push a feeler gauge down to remove the j-gate surround. Simple.

Thanks for the great vid. I have a '97 Jag XK8 with same console, but different radio. (My light panel is on the right side, vs. yours in middle, and no longer lights up. (Can still see radio stations/CD info in daytime tho.) Are the bulbs readily accessible once the radio & controls stack is out? I saw another vid where Jag owner replaced bulbs for the Climate Control Panel above radio, but looking at the pulled out radio here, the bulbs looks like they might be hard to access. Any guidance?

I'm not quite sure, but there's an internet forum where your question can definitely be answered. KZbin prevents me from typing the url, but just google "jaguar forum" and the top search result will take you there. Go to the S-Type section and just do a search for how to remove the center console. If that doesn't help, just post a new question and someone will help you in no time.

Please can you remember if there is a route for a USB cable from inside the area where the satnav would be (I have removed mine and replaced with a Garmin which uses a special cable) down into the inside of the centre console after moving the radio assembly out of the way?? TIA TB

hey, these vids are great. Question -- what is the bluetooth thing that you were trying to fix. Is there a module that makes your radio bluetooth-able? I'm just using a "bluetooth" cassette to get my phone/mp3 to pipe into the radio

@TheCassMighty If you're a little bit handy you can take care of most of the issues yourself. Just look at my videos. I'm just an average guy with average tools. Nikasil isn't really a problem these days. If the engine made it this far then the Nikasil should be good for the lifetime of the car. The problem with Nikasil was back in the early days when people used high sulfur gas. Today's gas is very low sulfur so you won't have a problem with it.

If I remember right in the manual it says that the only way to shut it off is to put the key in the ignition. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Its me again, Hobo with a problem with my 1997 Jag. xk8. I think i've narrowed my problem of occasionally blowing #10 fuse in front or the computer to one of the micro switch's or in the the solenoid that locks the trans in park. It will happen when i shift from drive or reverse to neutral. The engine stops and the fuse blows. Can anyone help?

I would like to someday own an XK8, and since you can get them so cheaply nowadays, it's looks like it could happen one day. I know about the Nikasil and tensioner issues, but I'm just a middle-class guy -- would I be getting in over my head in terms of maintenance and running costs? Thanks.

I need help with a 1997 xk8, no start problem. Theres a gearbox fault on the dash and the j-gate stuck in park. I did the key in the hole and moved the gearshift to neutral, no help. I did a reboot of the battery, no help. After watching this video im going to check the" park" lock switch. Do you have any ideas.

@@richardgarrison284 What is it doing? Does it crank but not start? If the shifter won't move it could be because of the brake switch. I have a video on how to replace it. The switch actually has two switches on it. Both have to indicate the same thing to the computer or it does funky stuff. If one of them is bad it prevents the J gate from moving. I actually sold my car a few years ago so I forget exactly how it works, but if I remember correctly the other one causes the cruise control to stop working. I had an issue where my cruise control wouldn't work. If your J gate isn't moving then the other switch is probably bad. Either that or the solenoid near the shifter is bad. But my car would still start when the second switch was bad. And I could shift it into gear. On most cars you have to have your foot on the brake in order to start the car. So if your shifter won't shift, and the engine won't start, it seems like the probable cause is one of the two switches down by the brake pedal has gone bad. I am typing on my phone right now, but when I get to my computer I will post the link to my video showing how to change that switch. Now that I think about it, I might not have ever made that into a video. I remember that it was a pain in the ass to change it. I had to lay upside down on my back down in the floor board trying to guide the studs in the firewall while my wife tried to put the nuts on from the engine side. Hopefully there's a video.

I got a question with the factory cassette radio you have there I have the same one. The volume control knob does not work properly anymore on the system it does however go up and down from the steering wheel. But with all of that being said I have no sound coming out of the back subwoofer. The speaker vibrates but there's no sound coming out of it. Can this be all a problem that the radio just needs to be replaced? I see them on eBay for an average of $150 I don't want to put no fancy Bluetooth in it or anything upgraded I just want one that'll work just like the one that's in the car now. I'm a stickler for keeping cars original anyway. Any knowledge would help if you believe that the radio just is not working anymore internally. Front speakers have sound by the way. I tried all the fade front back left right and I don't think it's a premium sound. Triangular speakers on the door to say Alpine. That's about it for the knowledge that I have and what it is doing.

If you have vibration from the speaker but no sound, I think you have a bad speaker. The speaker cone is probably damaged. The radio is sending a signal to the speaker, but the speaker just isn't turning it into sound.

Informative, figured it wasn't a big deal. I want to pull out that useless coin holder and put maybe a double cig lighter/USB receptacle in - any place nearby to pick up a constant 12V source that's always on without the ignition? Tired of that switched cig lighter, only charges things when the car's running. That and I need to fix my sticking 4-way switch, guess that's nothing new either!

Once you get the center console out it's easy to get to the wiring up behind the climate control unit. There has to be constant 12v in there somewhere. Use a meter lead with a needle tip. Thanks again but let me take this opportunity to put my 2¢ in here for everyone else...never, ever pierce insulation!!! I worked in a state equipment maintenance facility for 30 years and did a LOT of electrical - you name it - but never once did I ever poke a wire because once you do the clock starts and it's only a matter of time before you have a "green" wire. I had the "fun" of diagnosing several electrical issues that were a result of someone previously doing that and they are no picnic. Granted, under dash on a vehicle that never sees winter it's not such a big deal, but poking insulation on wires is a really bad habit to get into and, believe it or not, completely unnecessary.

I would agree with you if the wiring was in the engine bay or under the car, but in the dry environment inside the car it's not an issue.

Agreed...but I've still never poked a wire. :) One exception, if I finally decided that I'm certain a wire is broken somewhere and I'm going to have to replace it anyway knowing it will need to be spliced. I only splice them if it's the only reasonable method, I'd rather replace the entire length but sometimes that's not always feasible.
