very interesting - my xk8 failed its MoT due to rust and just watching this video and understanding what the mechanics are going to be doing to the xk8 to keep it on the road is useful, and certirnaly justifys the price of the repair seeing the work required to fix it !

@alzeNL, glad you found the video informative. Unfortunately, there is lots of scope for welding on an XK8. Hope you get your fixed OK. Happy motoring, regards Damian.

Nick, fortunately I didn't know the cars as well as I do now. If did I probably wouldn't have bought one at that point. Now I've done it I am thinking about doing it again, because I wasn't making videos at that point. Sounds mad but more problems the better as few as content on the channel goes. Thanks for the comment and compliment regards Damian

@@ODRModurol thanks for the reply. Would you say that as long as you have the suspension datum points they are all repairable or is there a point in the rusting that you’d say “nope, too far gone?” There seem to be a lot of traders out there that think their particular cars are worth a million pounds...
@ODRModurol4 жыл бұрын
Nick, the inner wing rust is directly at the datum point of the front chassis. So there is point where it gets more difficult but not impossible if you have time. There is point where it’s really not going to economic to do. Normally I would say this was linked to external panels and the cost of a decent paint job. Thanks for the comment regards Damian

Great video. I am new to jaguar, but always wanted one and have ended up buying a 2002 XKR. They were certainly lacking in the rust protection department when they made these. The previous owner had addressed the strut tower welding, but i have found no.2 on your list and was wondering what gauge steel you used. Keep up the good work.

240867ab, It was a while ago, now. From memory it was 1.5 zinc coated mild steel. Thanks the feedback and comment, regards Damian

I've got a 99 jaguar vanden plas and my frame rails are rusted out bad in the front coming from the front subframe down the bulkhead and were it turns a 90 degree angle the inside both sides are rusted out I can't find parts for it I'm going to weld it up the best I can and going to construct a full perimeter chassis to make it stronger

Why aren't the one in The US don't have this rust issue? Are they prep differently 🤔
@ODRModurol Жыл бұрын
Joseph, I think it's simply because it's a lot damper generally in the UK (Island Nation) and we use salt on the roads in the winter. Double thickness welded sheet steel doesn't get the rust treatment in-between the sheets. Hence area of double thickness rust from the inside out. Lucky if you don't have rust as an issue. Thanks for the comment regards Damian

@@ODRModurol we have snow and salt roads in N/E NY but I have been lucky kept her clean for over 20 years and love it as day one have 92,000miles trying to find a professional Mechanic in my area to do timing chain service and hoping to get another 20 out of it... Have a Great Day Mate

Joseph, good feedback much appreciated. Hope you find a mechanic and your timing sorted. Although timing issues where sorted from circa 2002 cars. Engines built after 13th August 2001 should have an issue. You might be OK. Have a great day yourself, regards Damian

Good luck with your search. No cars going to be perfect but hopefully this will help you assess what you are buying and taking on. This seems to be particular to UK cars due to our weather and salting of roads. Thanks Damian (PS don’t forget chain tensioners)

Not sure the car seller would appreciate me poking around under the car with a screwdriver to reveal the car's woes. I want one but am convinced I will end up with a rust bucket, but I love the shape of the car and love the V8 with the Jaguar character which the German cars don't have, of course.

What are the typical costs to repair such areas?

Depends on if you are doing yourself as the parts can add up to circa £500 with mounts and bushes etc.

How much of a problem are these areas on a car that's never seen any winter driving?

Thanks for the comment. Unfortunately I can only share my experience of early X100 UK cars. Other countries have different winter driving conditions and road treatments.

@@ODRModurol Well yes, but I was asking if these rust issues exist in cars that have NOT ever seen winter driving ... in any country!

Most of these cars are summer use only these days so yes I would expect to see the rust even in cars without winter driving.

Do these problems occur on the later X150 XK8 as well? I'm looking to buy a 2007 model, but the rust issue does concern me. Thanks.

Shouldn’t think so it’s aluminium unibody construction so quite a different animal. The aluminium will corrode but haven’t got any experience of the X150 sorry.

There’s a hidden area , no one checks , open the boot , take out the left and right side mats / and reach over the wheel arch to the very back and your find rust , every car I’ve checked has this unseen area , and all had the rust in the same place ,
