My Complete Theory and Songwriting course is NOW OUT! bit.ly/38fs0sx See how I made this song: • How To Make A Classic ...
Get the song on spotify / itunes, etc: bit.ly/3coZQwk
For my fifth episode of Riffing With The Modes, I decided to write an entire 80's rock single to demonstrate the power of Mixolydian. Kerry Devine performed vocals and Jeff Schwertfeger played drums. The video was filmed at a tiny suburban concert venue during quarantine, and then I filmed some greenscreen shots later on. The effects are all stock premiere effects- lots of color adjustments, channel blur, and automated zooms. Plus fake shakey cam when needed!
Hope you enjoy this one, it's the sort of song I would love to hear on the radio once a year and not much more than that, lol

Yeah, this does sound like 80s "pop metal". This mixolydian formula creates such a fresh cool and energetic sound. The vocalist is great. The drummer's real funny, love how he's trying to sing to the swinging mic! There was a time when THIS was the kind of music they played on the radio all the time...

Yesterday (2 Mar 2022) I was working in the kitchen and also decided to listen to some music through our Google "hockey puck". I rarely do either of those things. I asked it to play some rock music. As it turns out, in a lineup of music that I was enjoying, "What's Comin' To Ya" was sandwiched between Kansas Carry on my Wayward Son and Boston More Than a Feeling. Wow. Randomly being flanked by those artists and songs seems like the definition of making it in the modern music world. Congrats Jake, Kerry, & Beardstank!!

Oh, this is 1000 times better than steel panther. Leagues and leagues better. Poison, Mötley Crüe, fire house. Any one of those bands could’ve written or played that song. Not steel panther though. I grew up in that time and glam metal was my thing. I promise you none of us would’ve listened to steel panther. Don’t get me wrong, they’re not a bad band but, something is missing there. I can’t quite put my finger on it. Maybe hard-core superstar. They’ve got good stuff. Too bad they’re not making any new things. As for steel panther, I think what it is is that they need a better songwriter. Kind of like Love Stallion needs a new vocalist.

Spot on 1985. I hear a little Dokken, Poison, Ratt, and Satrianni. The only thing keeping it from sounding later in the decade was an underuse of tapping, whammy bars, and a pound of cocaine. The "keep it simple so anyone can do it" theme worked, and it's obvious that you guys had a ton of fun making the vdo! More hilarious may have been using your mugs for the bass and keyboard lines! Thanks for sharing, and best of luck! Now, how do I get rid of this thing?!

"Hair Metal" hahahah. This is totally exactly the sound. I was in high school. I listened to punk and ska but my metal friends were extremely cool (although somewhat underfed it seemed). They put up with me dissing Def Leppard and Quiet Riot but we both loved the Who and Zeppelin. AC/DC and Van Halen were also impossible not to like. Beastie Boys provided the evidence that all these subcultures had the right to party together.

ROCK N' ROLLIN'! Ugh, I just LOVE this song, it's been my top played song on Spotify for ages now! You, Kerry and Jeff really outdid yourselves! If I may ask, do you have the lyrics for this on hand? If it's alright with you, I'd like to write a Musixmatch page for this song so I can get the lyrics up on the Spotify upload. I can make out the mass majority of the song, but there are a few lines I'm unsure of, and it'd be nice to have some official confirmation on 'em! Thank you so much! (PS: Do you ever have plans to bring "Generations" or your older works like "Immaculate Gyration" and "My Favorite Time Of Year" to Spotify? I'm completely alright with listening to them on their respective platforms, but I figured it wouldn't hurt to ask! Much appreciated, and keep rockin'! HUGE fan of your work!)

Awesome stuff. Nailed it. My only critique (and this is tiny,) is that the solo wasn’t more singable/tuneful.. It sounded very improvised. There’s nothing wrong with that. That’s just a matter of my personal taste. In every other respect, this is exactly the sort of music we listened to back then. This would’ve been late middle school/early high school for me. I can’t decide whether this reminds me more of fire house, quiet riot or if it’s a new rock band I’m supposed to know but forgot the name of. It’s great. Very well done.

I know critique hasn't been asked for, but I'm an ass, so here goes: the song and performance is freaking awesome, but it's let down by the mixing, which isn't bad at all, but somehow not flattering for this style of music. It makes it sound like a really good wedding band demo, where you have a clear and middle-of-the-road mix that fits equally well to rock, pop and jazz standards. Maybe you could do a mixing challenge and give a few of us loser nerds the chance to mix it? I'm not sure I could do as good of a job with it too be honest, because I don't know what the stems sound like, but I have some ideas and I would really like to try.
