I was panicked when I got laid off but it actually was a blessing in disguise. Now I know, how to survive on the other side. It's not about avoiding failure but being adept at handling failure. Now if I lose my job ever again, I honestly would laugh because I know how to survive. I would not have known that about myself if I had never lost my job. I conquered fear, no fear is freedom!

I have been laid off twice now and my approach is always be applying and respond to recruiters. Some positions will be worth going and putting in the extra effort. But you will get tons of practice on how to bullshit through interview rounds. The first round is always a drone round against the hr.

I was in a similar situation laid off from my tech job but I was a little unlucky and found myself laid off for almost a year. I used these same tactics to cut off unnecessary expenses and didn't find myself needing to dip into my savings at all. Kudos to your sister for being able to do that with a growing family! I admit I was alone so much less pressure on how I spent my own money, but good to know it's possible even for families! Thanks for sharing!

@@asadb1990 that's a mystery to me, I interviewed every week sometimes getting to final rounds with big companies but they always went with someone else. I was receiving interview coaching, but I probably should have reached out to more of my network sooner to try and get that shoe in. In the end my first/only offer came from FAANG which I promptly accepted. Edit: a caveat that's important to mention is that I did not apply to any hourly positions, all full time, as I was luckily ok financially, but gruelling nonetheless

I'm in the tech industry, so although we see layoffs at FANG and larger companies, there are still many mid-size etc that are hiring. This gives hope to people who are laid off, they will surely find good work again soon.

I was laid off during Covid. Was given three months severance, took four months to land a new role. Thankfully we had three months of expenses in the emergency fund as well. There’s options out there I’m sure she’s going to land a good gig.

On one hand why have children when they are raised at a daycare ? Daycare can be very expensive unless you have a relative looking after that child. I stayed home for 9 years until the youngest was attending school full time. My income would not have covered childcare. Having an extra car ,insurance and so many expenses that occur. We lived on less and made due without but it was worked in the end.

It is straight up insurance. Your employer contributes at least 2.5% of your pay to unemployment insurance. You don't see it because it is deducted before you get paid but the unemployment insurance payments are a cost to a business to hire you. If you get laid off, don't hesitate to collect on the unemployment insurance.

Just got “furloughed” for 2 months from my tech startup. Tell your sis to be glad she doesn’t live in AZ! Max unemployment benefit here is $240/week vs. her $660/week. That cut makes for a rough transition with a stay at home mom and 3 kids coming from a salary of nearly six figures! 😅

Yeah but in AZ we pay little taxes, with more tax cuts coming. Those tax savings were supposed to be saved up for this reason. Compared to CA where everything is taxed. Plus in AZ the RE prices are much cheaper, meaning it's easier to pay for housing. Where as in CA, if you get laid off from your big tech job, a small tech job won't pay you enough to even cover the housing payment every month.

I remember when I was last laid off. Hurricane Sandy in 2012. 😆 First I went sailing in the Caribbean for six months, as I'd been living in my van for the recession. Then came home as my tenant was leaving, so rented rooms out and did gig work ever since 😄. It's wonderful not having a boss and part time work. Never go to restaurants, or paid concerts. Mint mobile for phone. Old car is paid for and low insurance. As prices go up I simply raise my gig work rate and housemate rent. I did do a spell of yacht work to pay down the mortgage and refi. So that helps $300/mo. What's going on now with the economy is nuts. Hoping for another recession so my daughter can afford a place.

wow I live in the San Francisco Bay Area... each day, I eat out, and for one person, the total bill is any where from $60 to $80... but it is for 2 meals... I order 2 and eat half of each, and then take home the rest... so my monthly bill for food can be $70 average x 30 = $2100 per month

It’s weird seeing one of these where the person’s financial situation seems pretty reasonable, like no $500/mo for candles or anything. I’m glad she went for unemployment though, when I got laid off I knew people that were like “oh I’m not gonna go through the hassle.” Like dude you have $0 coming in, get that money it’s yours! Funniest part for me was getting the notice from the unemployment office where they were like “you NEED to come in we MUST discuss how to search for jobs and fill out a resume” so I just showed up with my (multiple, industry specific) resumes and they’re all like “oh… uh… okay, enjoy your day.”

I hope that Carly could find next job soon. I know it is tough, I have been laid off before in oil and gas industry during oil price crash downturn so I know how stressful it could be. In the process I learnt that everyone is replaceable, doesn't matter our performance was because that's how it works in corporate world run on capitalism. Thus we should never be dependent on our job as a single source of income. Best to diversify and create another source of passive income whether it is online business, shares, divident, renting out property, deposits interest, etc so you get peace of mind. Because there will always be fluctuation. In fact every 10 years we always have financial crisis so we need to be versatile at any time. Also see if your technical skill can be transferable to other sector that not so niche. Dont forget to be discipline with your expenditures. I feel for your sister. I was laid off during the pandemic working as a Talent Sourcer for a top healthcare firm and felt my world was collapsing in 2020 after losing my well-paid recruitment and sourcing position. After re-grouping and making several mistakes (accepting low paying recruitment jobs out of desperation). I was fortunate enough to get back to my firm. Shortly thereafter less than year or so left, now work for the top healthcare firm and feel more stable. I suggest looking for non tech companies try to avoid start-ups or companies who are not well capitalized. Instead look for non-for-profit firms in needed such as governmental entities such as public hospitals college or universities, mainly public colleges if private ensure they have are well funded with large endowments, if not try to get an employment contract. Just my two cents.

It's because of the interest rate. Most of these companies were over leveraged and bloated during low interest rate, but now the FED has increased the interest rate to fight inflation by killing demand, if most people are unemployed they won't have money to buy things anymore, so inflation will come down, hence the layoff. Companies can't have cheap loans anymore.

I got laid off and have a disability. That’s also why. My brother in law was on sick leave when laid off. This is a crazy time. Then, everything happens. Things break down more it seems. Or maybe more noticeable. The simple life is easier for me. I’d rather eat good meals at home and have a roof over my head. If I spent a lot of time eating out and shopping for clothing, I wouldn’t be able to survive, now. I dropped my magazine subscriptions, doing my hair and nails. You do need at least a 6 month to year’s money, in case you can’t find a job. Unemployment is hard to deal with. People are losing their shirts. I’m lucky, other than the multiple repair bills, I have a place to live. However, my next door neighbor is having trouble making her dues to live in the condo. But, I can’t worry about everyone else. I have multiple repairs bills , right now and have to worry about myself.

unemployment is 40% of past income? Does that mean if you are a software programmer, and is about $20,000 per month income, then you can still take $8,000 per month for unemployment? Does it last at most 6 months or 12 months? You know in California, for the past 30 years, it stayed at $1900 max per month, which is highly unfair, because the price the things went up 3x over 30 years but they don't increase that amount.

As a Swede, I appreciate the Swedish system where we pay higher taxes and get benifits from the government. Parents gets 480 days paid leave for their newborn and your employer can not fire you because you're on maternity/paternity leave.

Costco pizza is delicious and it’s only $10 for a whole pizza. My wife and I treat ourselves to it every couple weeks or so.
