Jakes Shop Finally getting to paint the car for this LS-1 swap camaro restoration. I go over some prep detial with how I ended up masking the car off as well a cleaning and wipe down. Fred comes over to help shoot some video and with me actually spraying sealer. As well as my screw up's with runs in the clear. Hope you like it. Jake

@JakesShop ~~ I totally agree with leaving the doors ON when painting and masking them off the way you did! You did an EXCELLENT JOB PAINTING THIS CAR! The imperfections you were focused on are simply part of the reason the Buffing Stage is done on ALL paint jobs. No matter what, there will always be places that need to be perfected on every paint job, after the clear coats are on. Spraying a car is an exhausting job. Most people don't realize how much strength and endurance you need in your arms, shoulders, and upper chest/back to control the gun. Years ago, when my uncle had his own paint and body shop, he didn't initially have the money for a fancy "custom paint booth". His spray booth was set up much the same way you did yours and it worked great. One thing he did build to help him conserve muscle energy/endurance.....He built a simple "Deck Stand". He built it out of 2"x12" x 16 Ft long framing lumber and plywood. He ran the 12" sides perpendicular to the floor, so the 2" side of the board was resting on the ground; added cross braces 16" on center down the length of the box which was 24" wide overall. Then he added 3/4" plywood to the top as decking. This was just the right size to give him extra height/width stability to shoot the top and upper portions of the cars, down the full length of the vehicle...without straining his shoulders or altering the way he handled the spray gun. When he was ready to move down to the lower part of the cars, the Deck Stand was simply flipped up on its side against the wall. He mounted a couple of 2" x 4" off cuts to the studs that swung down and anchored the Deck Stand on its side, firmly out of the way until he needed it again. Thanks for sharing your experience and progress!! ~~Christy~~

Almost at this stage with my 68. My first time also, I'll be happy if mine turns out as well as yours did. I'm more of a mechanic and will be glad when I can get to that stage. This has been a long learning process, each step (at least for myself) understanding there are no shortcuts, and so much more to painting a car than I had first realized. Thanks for tutorial. Your car looks fantastic. ((sub'd))

Looks awesome! Awesome video! Curious to know if you had any overspray problem on the outside of the barn once the fan exhausted the paint and clear coat? Im looking to do the same concept however i would have to vent out towards the front of the garage and i really dont want to get overspray on the doors or the siding. Thanks
@JakesShop
@JakesShop 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Yeah. My old barn is just that.. Old. And dark red. I But I never noticed any overspray outside that stuck to anything besides the grass. but it was mostly just dry dust type of thing and was un-noticeable after a rain or two. I'm also pretty lucky because 90% of the time the wind is blowing from the south and the fan is on the North side of the shop.

@JakesShop
@JakesShop 4 жыл бұрын
It cleared out great with my setup. Felt like a commercial cross draft booth. I would recommend using automotive painting plastic. It's has it's draw backs as you need to tape where you staple it since it's so thin. Also tears easily if you drag a tool across it or have your kids poking there fingers in it constantly... Good side of it is it's easy to repair with tape. And it's static keeps dust clinging to it so it doesn't bounce or float off into your work like regular plastic would. Only thing i wish i would have done differently was have lights down low so i could see down lower along the rockers. it was quite a trick to get those areas. Started to ware my headlamp while painting..

What brand of sealer did you use? Im alittle confused about the sealer process. Some people say that sealer is just a wet primer that has more reducer in it?
@JakesShop
@JakesShop 4 жыл бұрын
Chuck Beaumont. I used Transtar quickseal. Yes some guys use it on bare metal before spraying primer. And some primers are not made to be shot onto bare metal so you have to use something on the bare metal as you need a metal etching product to grab onto the metal for the primer to stick. Problem with sealer is if you let it setup/harden for more then a day or so it gets to hard and your supposed to scuff it before painting over it. This is why I chose a 2k primer that was direct to metal. Then shot sealer before paint for two main reasons. It’s tinted closer to your paint color. Like darker or lighter to help with paint coverage. And also fills in micro scratches from your final sand.
