Finally a practical paint booth video that tells me how to put something up in my garage without busting the bank - thank you from the UK!

Thanks. I thought so. Seemed to work perfectly

2 suggestions you should use a belt driven squirrel cage type fan to avoid igniting the aerosol paint fumes. And also a filter on the exit of the exhaust fan to prevent aerosolised paint that will float and stick to objects outside. But all in all very nice

Jake: Don't sell yourself short. The body lines and gaps on your car look GREAT. I'm trying to restore a 69 Chevelle SS and getting the gaps to line up has been a nightmare. "Trial and error" you say doesn't even BEGIN to describe the process. But you've done a fantastic job so far. Well done, sir!!

Love the home grown engineering. Should you put a filter in front of the exhaust fan as well to protect the fan and minimize solvent hitting the hot fan motor?
@JakesShop3 жыл бұрын
Yeah I was paranoid too. I made a fresh air vent to the fan motor in a later update video.

Love the booth. Can you tell me what kind of filters you put in the wall? Where did you get them? Thanks
@JakesShop4 жыл бұрын
Gregg Allen I got them from work. They are Columbia brand merv 8. 2” pleated 24x24 filter. Might try googling filter supply places or a local HVAC service company’s for better price then box stores in your area.

looks good jake I just bought a 42 inch fan similar to yours trying to figure out how to attach it to the shop wall I may put it on the inside to make it easier on me due to the shape of the metal my shop is made of. still long way to go but just bought 2 more Camaros a 67 and a 68 need tons of parts to start working on the 67 as it has been stripped inside but I have a clear title and a shell with doors need seats and interior. going to go up to biskeys and get front sheet metal soon I hope
@JakesShop4 жыл бұрын
Chris Mansker 42” is huge! Should ventilate a rather large and leaky space well. I had a 24” round ring (accuflange) that was flanged. Screwed that to the hole i made in my door then duct taped fan to the flange. :). Sounds like you have some bad ass projects!
@chrismansker88704 жыл бұрын
well it was a large shop fan we found at a garage sale for cheap it is like new though. the siding on my shop has a 6 inch groved surface so I need to figure out a way to fill in some gaps. I am still building the shop so not really a problem just things to work out. let me know if you have or know of anyone getting rid of Camaro stuff thanks.

Chris Mansker will do!

Did you do grinding / dry sanding inside your paint booth to keep the dust down in the rest of the garage or did you keep it "clean" inside the booth? I need to build a booth to paint, but I'm interested in keeping dust down in the rest of the garage. Curious how you cleaned it up after the inside of the booth got dirty (if that's what you did). Thanks!
@JakesShop4 жыл бұрын
Yeah I did sand in the booth to help keep dust out of the rest of the shop. Had to do a ton of cleaning before base and clear but you would want to do that no matter what.
@JakesShop4 жыл бұрын
After all body work was done and final wet sand on primer I let it dry out for a few days. Then with fan on I blew out everything a few times with compressed air. Then wiped down floor and started wiping down car a few times. Then masked it off. Then repeated the entire process. Then just before paint wetted floors and got to spraying.

Thinking about doing something similar, kicked around pvc pipe, but I like the 2x4s
@JakesShop4 жыл бұрын
MrFireman164 yeah 2x4’s were cheap and easy for me. Also more rigid then pvc.

Professional auto painter told me if I paint my 68 fierbird in my garage to do exactly like your doing and said wet floor to but he said to run small fan at bottom of the door? I haven't started painting yet but what do you think
@JakesShop2 жыл бұрын
It’s a ton but of work to properly paint a car yourself. But for me it was worth it. I have other videos of the final product. My setup worked just as good as any professional paint booth. :)

What size compressor are you using for this project? I'm looking forward to doing this to my garage

@randysoller83003 жыл бұрын
You've probably already figured this out but, with Camaro and firebird unibodies, you have to set your body gaps with all four wheels on the ground or you will be wasting your time. Nothing will line up with it on jack stands.
@JakesShop3 жыл бұрын
Randy all good stuff. Luckily I squared and bolted the subframe with solid bushings while it was on the ground and then welded in subframe connectors. With that this wasn't an issue for me on this project. But your comment for these unibody style cars without sub frame connectors is something to be mindful of for sure. Thanks for watching!.

What are the dimension's needed to paint an average sized old American made car?
@JakesShop3 жыл бұрын
General size paint booths are about 14’x24’ and would paint almost any car. But more room the better and the more you can paint it in pieces at one time which is ideal in my opinion.

No worries about fumes igniting on fan motor?
@JakesShop4 жыл бұрын
Tim Harmon if I was more then a hobbiest then I would have a concern. I’m running over 15000 cfm through this booth with a very low static pressure loss and proper makeup air so the saturation rate is not enough to cause harm with an hvlp gun and the minimal overspray. I would probably shy away from A siphon feed without considering going to a belt driven/motor out of airstream fan. If it’s at all questionable then i would go to a belt driven motor out of airstream fan. :).
@harmonspoolrepair4 жыл бұрын
Jakes Shop Thanks for your answer. You have gotten lucky so far. It is just a matter of time before it explodes. There is a reason they use sealed motors. Good luck
@JakesShop4 жыл бұрын
Tim Harmon You know Tim this has been on the back of my mind a lot. I. haven’t had any problems but what if the fan motor burns up and it was really saturated there’s always a what if situation so I am going to add something to the fan as an insurance policy to keep this from happening I’ll post another update on it soon.

@@JakesShop air conditioner fans are sealed motors...
@ceesklumper3 жыл бұрын
You can also just use a fan to push fresh air rather than pull contaminated air. No explosion risk then.

You should turn your fan around, and make it a positive airflow. You don't want the fumes going through the fan. That is a great way to get blown up! I hope you will consider it, best of luck!
