Cars is one of my all-time favorite Pixar movies. And watching it in different languages has been a real pleasure. In fact, the Cars franchise has some absolutely wild dubs. It features some of the most fascinating and surprising adaptations I've ever encountered. Without further ado, let's begin!

The Polish dub for the entire Cars franchise is also amazing, with tons of Polish car jokes, referencing Polish car brands, popculture, etc. Replacing American names with Polish ones, with many being really clever car puns; Mater was also changed from an American country man to a Polish country man. The dub is partially the reason why Cars is so liked and popular in Poland compared to the United States.

7:02 I can explain this joke as a true russian. There's an old joke in Russia about poore drunkard who spent all their money on alcohol but still need do drink something. So they drink antifreeze, brake fluid (tormozukha in this scene), window cleaner and other non-drinkable stuff. She's talking about her gas station, but it sounds like she has a drunkard's den there. That's where the joke is!

Cars was the first US movie that was officially launched in cinema with Ukrainian voice-over, so actors and translators tried really hard. In retrospective maybe too much was changed, but it was great at the time. Everything from it became a meme, damn it was good and funny.

In the Greek dub mater’s name is “barbas”, which is an uncommon word for “uncle” used by some people in rural areas. There’s also a “Your mother” joke added in this version. At the original movie, at the scene where Luigi asks McQueen if he is racing with Ferraris and he answers that he’s racing at the piston cup, the other Italian car says:”Luigi only talks with Ferraris” before leaving. However, in the Greek dub he says “Your mother should race at the piston cup”. It doesn’t translate well, but it’s actually a “your mother”

As a Ukrainian I can clarify some of the things, and express my personal opinion on the translation of certain phrases because they are generally often related to peculiarities in the cultural and society of Ukraine at that time. 1:41 Roads in Kyiv: I actually think that was a great adaptation. In general, it is related to the fact that after the collapse of the USSR, Ukraine had fairly bad roads. And this was often discussed in society, and it was logical that Kyiv, as the capital, would have the best roads in the country. And the words ‘There are no such good roads in Kyiv itself’ were clear to all viewers, everyone understood that the road was VERY GOOD. Even when I was watching Cars at the age of 7-8 years old, I realized the meaning of this phrase. And it's hard to say whether it was my problem that at the age of 7 I knew the situation with the roads in the country, or whether the translation was just so brilliant. 2:50 THIS IS AN HALLARIOUS JOKE! When I watched Сars as a kid, I devinitely didn't get the joke, but today it made me laugh out loud! 2:28 I would also like to add here a pretty interesting moment in the Ukrainian dub. Meter said that once he knew a girl named Galya and he mentions her car brand - Lexus. But instead of pronouncing it correctly(LEKSUS), he says LESKUS. This hints that he is a kind of a simple village man without any higher education, etc. It doesn't make him stupid, it just shows that he's a simpleton 5:19 In Ukrainian, we often use the phrase ‘I can't believe my eyes/ears’, which obviously means that I can't believe what I see/hear. And here it's adapted to the world of cars, which is cool, but... in Cars universe, the eyes are not in the headlights, they're on the windscreen... so it sounds weird, maybe adaptation meant that cars used their headlights to illuminate what they see... but it still sounds strange But it's also fair to notice that at the end McQueen sayd he couldn't believe his stickers, and that's actually true, because he had stickers instead of headlights. So it's cool to see the consistency in the translation, but if you think about it for more than a second, it starts to sound weird 7:08 And now for the scene with the tractors. Here I think that the author did not quite understand the essence of dubbing (or did not explain it well enough, so it seemed to me that he did not understand). The word used by the Meter is generally just a crude calling for a woman. But it can sometimes be used to describe a man, meaning that a man is a coward. I suspect that this stems from the stereotypical idea that men do not cry and cannot be afraid. Nowadays, such stereotypes are almost a thing of the past, but you can still find a situation where a man is called a woman or a girl I also have to mention an ambiguous thing in the Ukrainian translation - Dinoco. For some reason, in our dubbing was used very strange translation, which makes no sense at all. It can be literally translated as "DinoSomething", and it just doesn't make sense. I don't know if it was intended to mean DinoSomething or if it just sounds like that, but a simple transliteration would be 100% better. As for the video, it's great. It was really interesting to hear other translations and opinion on how this or that variant adapted the original meaning.

I grew up with the Romanian dub, and after rewatching it and comparing it with the original dub in English, it sure has some differences, here are a few: 1. "When Trabants will fly." is a car-ified form of the phrase "when the pigs will fly." As a Romanian, it's funny. 2. Mater's name in this dub is "bucșă", a *very important component*. 3. "Mack? I ain't no Mack! I'm a Peterbilt for dang's sake!" in Romanian is slightly different. It sounds like this: "Mack? Eu nu sunt Mack, sunt Georgescu Camion, nătărăule!". Rough translation is "Mack? I'm not Mack, I'm George Truck, dummy!" 4. McQueen when he sees Sally for the first time, he says "Ce bucata.", which in Romanian, "bucata" is a slang for a hot girl with distinctive features, which is not strange since Porsche 911's are curvy. These are some I managed to remember.

I think the translation of Mater's Polish name to Złomek is great. The scrap metal is "złom". Mater lives in a scrapyard so it makes sense. When we use diminutives, we often add “-ek” at the end of word. This is how “Złomek” came out and literally translated it means "little scrap". Translated scene where Mater meets McQueen also makes sense in Polish version: - By the way, I'm Mater. - Mater? - It's like “ziomek” (eng. countryman/homie), but spelled by “ł”.

Alright... I'm a native Iranian anddd I feel like there's some clearing-up I need to do, first up "Moter" isn't quite the way to transcribe how the Persian dub pronounces Mater's name, "Mätter" I feel like, would be a better transcription (and no it's not related to motor, the word we have for motor is موتور, pronounced "Mōtōr", which we got from french) and secondly the word that sounds similar to Mater's name isn't the word for killer which is قاتل, pronounced "Ghätel", an Arabic loan word in Persian which is an Indo-European language the same as English and German and yada yada yada, it's قاطر, pronounced Ghäter, which means ass, the animal, or mule if you will. R and L are pretty similar sounding consonants so I get why one would make such a mistake but it's no biggie really glad you included Persian🧡🧡🧡

@koorous05
@koorous05 Ай бұрын
@@Jakuzenta I guess killer is more of a spicy word so many would just opt for that but there's a reason it's mule and not killer you see a huge part of Iranian humor culture is based around comparison to animals to a point where the main word for the concept of being an idiot is "being a donkey", "Khar Bödan" in Persian (we do have a word for stupid and it is widely used but this one's more popular to the masses), and the other animals follow suit with this phenomenon be it cow or horse (like when we get into an accident we don't yell out A-hole or smth like that, we just scream at the top of our lungs, addressing the culprit of the accident: YOU COW!!!), but because mules are basically juiced up donkeys the joke for them is pretty much the same, being stupid...and because Mater is stupid well.. I guess you can see where I'm going with this. The same thing happens in Shrek's Persian dub where the whole time Donkey's being a donkey is just infinitely funnier to Persian speaking audiences.

In the Persian dub, he isn't saying "killer" (قاتل-ghaatel) there, but he is saying "mule" (قاطر-ghaater), which is more like "mater" because of the "r" sound at the end. Also, "Golikhanum" is actually two words: "Goli" and "Khanum," where "Khanum" means lady or miss. So, the translation would roughly be "Miss Flower." The translation of the evil beings mentioned in the video was correct. However, fun fact: Persian propaganda refers to the United States as the "big evil" (شیطان بزرگ), which is the same phrase used here, followed by the phrase "they don't want us to be independent." That seems like an obvious reference to the United States from the Persian government's propaganda point of view. great video, keep up the good work!

Greek version of the movie is also interesting. Mater's name was "Barbas" which translates into an uncle/old man. Also, an interesting fact is that Sakis Rouvas (famous singer in Greece), best known as "Rouvas", who voiced McQueen on the greek dub is mentioned in both of the movies. In the first one, is when Mia and Tia came to talk to McQueen he said something like "imagine being Rouvas" (can't have a specific great translation) instead of "I love being me". Rouvas is also rmentioned in Cars 2 when Darell Cartrip is talking in Porto Corsa and said that he saw many celebrities, he added, "I think I also saw Rouvas". In the first movie when Sally enters the court house McQueen said "Holly Christopher", who is the protector of the drivers in Greece, instead of "Holly Porche". Finally when Luigi and McQuenn are talking about Ferraris, Luigi replies "Luigi follows only Ferraris". In the greek dub he replies "Your mother should run in Piston Cup".

Minor correction on the Italian version, Tow Mater's Italian name is "Carl Attrezzi" (not "Attrozzi"), a wordplay on "carro attrezzi", which means "tow truck" in Italian. And his Italian nickname "Cricchetto" is Italian for "ratchet" (or also a diminutive of "cric", Italian for "car jack" or "tire iron")

In Polish dubbing Mater is called Złomek, word derived from scrap-metal but the name is used to refer to old, rusted cars. The name fits because he is a tow truck so is working on a scrapyard and he is old and rusty. The world Złomek is similar to Ziomek meaning dude.

Mater's name in Italian is "Cricchetto" taken from the diminutive version of "Crick" that is basically how italians call the "Jack" to raise the car when changing a tire. It's a cute and funny name because he tecnically raises the cars to tow them.

in slovenian version, at begining when commentators are talking about how fast tickets were sold they said " ...and tickets were gone faster, then carniolan sausage after blood donation campaign." Carniolan sausage is national and protected dish, and you usually do get this sausage with mustard and bread after donating blood. Mater also uses words for tomato, but it uses a dialect version for it.

Fun Fact in the Israeli version of Cars, Lightning McQueen's name is changed to Speedy McQueen. In the opening act then, when McQueen makes the joke about "Thunder comes after Lightning", he instead says it as "Gonzales comes after Speedy", referencing the Looney Tunes character Speedy Gonzales.

A reference to McQueen voice actor, famous Greek singer Sakis Rouvas with whom teenage girls were obsessed with at the time. -Finally, instead of Luigi saying "Luigi follow only the ferraris", he says "Send your mother to race in the piston cup"

'złomek' translates to scrap metal but he says 'something like 'ziomek' but wih Ł', so it's a wordplay. Ziomek means a 'mate' which is kind of a wordplay on 'matter' which itself is a wordplay of 'scrap matter'. So it's a wordplay in a wordplay, in a wordplay. Wordplayception. And the letter 'Ł' in Polish is like 'W' in English, because we read ''W' like english people read 'V'. Sad that you didn't include it because it's actually something that's more fleshed out than what other dubs did.
