4:10 The Russian version DOESN'T sound anything close to the official Russian dub. Most likely the one you've brought up is one of an unofficial dubs. In the official dub all the swears are properly censoured, plus the voice actor is a completely different person and there are no English bg voices to be heard.

In Hungarian, Donkey calls Shrek as "green fisted slayer", albeit in Hungarian, it is sounds better, because it works as a pun ("zöldöklő öldöklő" - albeit the first part should be "zöld öklű" (green fist), however the 'zöldöklő' makes it like "turning to green". So Shrek is a smo who's fist turning into green kill, mean machine)

6:48 In Polish, there's also not a quite good equivalent to Charming for Prince Charming. So, it's named in the polish dub as "Książe z Bajki" which means literaly "Prince from a fairytale" and for this reason remeant the Disney-related joke.

From what I know, "Prince Charming" is pretty much the same as "Książe z Bajki" when used as a figure of speech, when talking for example about idealized men. However, the polish version fits it just a tad better, considering that we are talking Fairy Tales.

The Czech dub of the Shrek movies are absolutely ingenious and quite literally everyone loves it here. It's full of puns and sneaky references, but I'll address only those from the first two films that were mentioned in this video. In the Gingy torture scene, Farquaad references Hansel and Gretel when taunting Gingy. And Gingy then references Maja the bee as an answer to the question where everyone is, eventually reciting the lyrics of the theme song of the show. Prince Charming is Princ Krasoň, which references a character in a play of Jára Cimrman's theatre (something like Czech Monty Python). The name is literally Prince Pretty-Boy, and in the original play he also had a brother Princ Drsoň (Prince Tough-Guy). The bush in Shrek 2 is a reference to Halina Pawlowská who is a Czech writer. And as well as in the German and Russian dubs, characters switch between formal and informal speech throughout the movies too.

7:20 my guess is that by 2001 most of the soviet and early post-soviet kids and adults knew about trolls and giants("veleekans") by european fairy tales and as a matter of facts most of the translations of charles pierro's ogres were as "giants" or "man-eaters" (do not confuse with mere cannibals =)) to adapt the image for russian kids with something that they already know from russian folklore. Starting from 90s with the influx of western media (video games, movies, fantasy novels, DnD and other stuff) the Ogre as a word eventually became more common.

When Jeffrey Katzenberg went to see Shrek dubbed in Latin American Spanish in Mexico, he noticed that the audience laughed more than in the English version. In 2004, at the Cannes Film Festival, the Russian dubbing of Shrek 2 was recognized as one of the most successful. Critics and viewers especially noted the work of Aleksey Kolgan. The dubbing master voiced the main character and even managed to surpass the original. Kalgan's low and deep voice suited the ogre more than the voice acting of comedian Mike Myers.

In the Finnish version, Shrek is referred to as a giant (jätti), and not an ogre (hirviö). For example, in the first movie after the All Star intro and the men are about to pitchfork Shrek, when Shrek arrives, he says in the English version: "Well actually, that would be a *giant.* Now *ogres,* they are much worse." But in the Finnish version, the nouns are swapped because Shrek is a giant and not an ogre in the Finnish version, and he says: "Itse asiassa, se on *hirviön* hommaa. Kas kun *jätit,* he ovat pahempia."

In the Norwegian version of Shrek 1, Gingy talks to Farquaad about "en baker fra Østre Aker" ("a baker from Eastern Aker"), a popular Norwegian nursery rhyme. Said baker also becomes the one who appears in Shrek 2. Also, in the scene with Donkey and the Dragon in the castle, where he says "That's unwanted touch!" while she's making advances on him, in the Norwegian dub he just straight up says "That's sexual harassment!" Also, Shrek is just called a troll in Norwegian because there's no direct, widely agreed-upon Norwegian translation of "ogre". On a related note, one of the jellyfish in Shark Tale drops an S-bomb in the norwegian dubs. They went crazy with the Dreamworks dubs in the early-mid 00's.

3:08 there is a very clever joke in the Ukrainian translation. Marzipan here is the name of some crime boss, probably. They even decline his name, adding 'a' at the end, as it should be when answering 'who?' (Marzipana). So, they talk about Oksana or Maryana only as his wives, and the joke quietly good corresponds to the original 7:20 I think that there is no big difference for these creatures in slavic mythology. Giant, or великан, is used when talking about someone who is really big, which Shrek is exactly is. Ogres and trolls can be easily confused with each other. Also, you should notice that people are terrified with Shrek, so they probably don't think about calling him properly, they just afraid and wanna leave the scene

In Germany the formal you is very fast on its way out. But given the context and behavior or Shrek in that situation using anything else would sound weird, even today over 10 years later. I don't know if I watched it in German but from what you describe that seems appropriate.

Russian Shrek is truly iconic. Simply the best one. Also Russians know what "charming" means. 'Cause they have word "чарующий" that have the similar meaning.
