Jeff, I own only three of your pipes but each one has been the best pipe I ever smoked... until the next one arrives... and then it's the best pipe I ever smoked... until the next one arrives... and so on. God! That was awesome to watch! Bent bulldog is my all-time favorite shape and the danish freehand inspired flare you gave it turned out amazing! Maybe one day I’ll be able to afford one of your pipes or maybe even get a lesson from you. I’m still a novice with only 15 pipes under my belt, but you have definitely been a great inspiration to me.

That's brilliant well done, you know I'm pleasantly surprised to see people like yourself making briar pipes. It brings back memories of when i was barely a teenager back in the early 1960's, when every week day after school went to work at a briar pipe makers. Although i didn't get to go through the whole process which was very interesting and fun, i did learn the staining process and polishing. The stain was made up in our factory from powder in different colours like walnut, cherry. etc and mixed with methylated spirits which i believe you can still get today. The process involved using a lighted candle and rack made from wood with a couple of dozen nails in, and pot containing the made up stain the bowl of the pipe was dipped in the stain and the surplus was tipped out. It was then held over the candle to burn off then placed on the rack until the rack was full. Once the rack was full it was passed to the person on the polishing machine to polish both the bowl to bring out the grain and colour and the stem marks. I won't go on much more only to tell there were several more stages till you end up with the finished product. There you are just a little insight in to how it was done over sixty years ago. The pipe makers Holdens Briar Pipes which no longer exists was in a place called Crouch End near the clocktower in North London if you wish to take a look on Google Earth.

:) Yes, lots of pipe makers do very precise drawings like you. But so many unexpected things happen when we make pipes that I don't think there's a reason to lock oneself in to a pattern. This 'loose' approach lets me pivot when I need to without problems. I wish I had time to make more videos, but sadly it's not possible. I'd like to make one per month...but we'll see

I have to admit I thought you screwed it up with the and blaster but after you did the dark finish I was very impressed. You should invest in a 2 x 72 belt grinder. I made one about 7 years ago because I watched to much forged in fire. I have used it for a lot of knives but to be honest I do not think one day goes by that i am in the shop it does not get used. So much better than using a disk sander. The small wheels are so much better than a drum sander. The belt being 6 feet long it stays cool and does not load up like a disk or drum sander. I built mine from a old treadmill and it will hog away metal or wood. This looks like a fun hobby. I have turned a shit ton of small weed pipes for people but this looks fun and like a 2x 72 grinder would make light work

I really enjoy your videos. You continue to push me beyond my comfort zone to try new techniques in my hobby pipe making. My question on this one is - It looks like the draft hole is drilled just outside of the mortise hole in the end of the shank. Do you fill that? Or do you just let the shoulder on the stem cover it when inserted?
@jalanpipes
@jalanpipes 2 жыл бұрын
Glad you're enjoying them! Yes, that little notch is normal on bent pipes. The mouthpiece covers it up. Some pipe makers plug the notch, but I think this is a bad idea since you need to eventually ream the airway with a drill bit or reamer anyway.

Is this a secret tool from a specialty shop, or a known homemade tool, or do I just not know what I'm looking for? Is this preferred to an off the shelf disc sander? All questions aside, it's beautiful work.
