from another reply: "we usually do but we're on a little break at present until after the forthcoming NAMM show...usual service will be resumed shortly!! Many thanks for watching/taking the time to comment, best wishes, DR." but i suspect that also due to COVID they'll be on an even more extended break.

I've played on a Jalapeno kit that was backline for a gig we played. It was absolutely incredible. The build quality is second to none and the finish was exquisite. David is a great builder and a genuinely nice bloke. These drums look and sound great.

Not keen on that finish, but at least you have a whole set of drums for a similar price to that A&F snare drum reviewed recently.

I think they sound decent. When the cymbals are out of the way the higher end of the drums come through more IMO. I think I would prefer single ply batters to open the sound up more, probably coated for a slightly more vintage sound. I like the aesthetic of the kit although in the close up shots it does look like the finish on the hoops isn’t consistent, I don’t mind a more textured look on the shells though.

Nice to see a 13 inch diameter rack tom for a change where it is more common to see all even diameter toms nowadays.Would LOVE to hear a 6 or 8 ply kit with standard 2.3 mm flanged hoops & a 18 inch deep kick by Jalapeno....

Hi, new to the channel. I noticed on many of your reviews you complain about the stock heads. It would be nice to see you change them to get the best sound out of these kits, and show before and after. Are you not allowed to do so? I also get how fussy us drummers can be about our heads at times, but it would be nice to see a new recommendation. Look forward to seeing more kit reviews especially of the higher end kits that are actually available to the masses.

Very fair review. Really enjoyable to see Jalapeno getting some air time. I love the sound of this kit, although I prefer the sound of my Jalapeno! Even as a Yorkshireman, these Lancashire drums are great. Check out my channel to see mine in action 🙌

if you want to hear a birch kit that sound very good try a kumu drum kit or a sonor SQ2 kit. i had a sonor SQ2 heavy birch kit and it was a beast. not dry and lifeless like this kit at all. i think this kit need evans g1 coated on toms and snare and triple flange 2.3mm hoops everywhere to let those thick shells breathe and live.

Having not heard this kit in person, I think the recording sounds great. The rack tom is a bit dry and is probably the weakest spot of the kit. Maybe a single ply batter head on the 13" could liven it up. I think the floor tom and bass drum are bringing some great sounds though. The snare is fine. Nothing breathtaking, but it fits with the rest of the kit. Too bad about those little build quality issues you experienced. Maybe there is a slight "out of round" nature to the shells that is causing the tension rods to bind. I don't know.
@markmooch

I know drumdial do a bearing edge conditioner to ease movement between bearing edge and head where friction can typically build up as it’s a common issue. Why this happens I’m not sure. Drum and hoop roundness, bearing edge level-ness could be the reason but on a brand new custom kit sent for review, surely not? Perhaps type of bearing edge and hoop compatibility are an issue? I would have guessed though that the heads not being centred, seated and stretched evenly (perhaps irredeemably) are usually the most likely causes. This can occur from the offset of the first time tuning if you aren't careful to avoid it. Tube lugs can cause an issue when listening for a clear pitch when the tension rod on the opposite end of the tube lug isn’t as high as it’s counter parts on that side of the drum. This is because the more of less tension exerted on either end of the tube lug affects the surface tension of the whole lug which affects how sound vibrates through it (I think therefore the pitch) and not forgetting the interplay of the opposite heads them selves. Kenny sharretts explains and demonstrates this well in a tuning video on KZbin - he says you can end up chasing your tail if you overlook this, it’s very true. I think whilst chasing your tail you can end up setting up a situation for bearing edge friction to occur like I explained above. That’d be my guess.

I wonder how this would have sounded if they included a 10"rack tom to even out the kit, how dry would that go? Apart from that, that kick drum was the best part of the review, kind of reminds me of Bonzo and his 14x26 monster bass drum.. The rest didn't really interest me apart from a really nice rimshot thanks to those hoops.. Nice review!

While I admire entrepreneurship, when it comes to research and development, boutique brands usually don’t cut it for me. There’s no science behind their sound or build they just go for something and hope that it sells.
