I give Lee a lot of credit for doing this where all of youtube can see it. Sitting next to Pete would make most of us look inept.

@@StompSlaps Hey, he could sell that to Helene Fischer, I bet. ;) But yeah, I can so feel for Lee. It's really hard to wrap your brain around such things. But then again, every tiny step in the right direction feels like an epiphany. Like that A7->D7 shift Pete showed, that only requires slipping down a fret. :)

In short - the technicality of the lesson assumes basic knowledge that Lee doesn't have yet.. which is why he isn't getting it. Very brave of Lee to put himself in this position on camera. Such a great humble guy in so many ways.

The cool thing with Lee here, is that he’s right where most of us guitarists who watch these videos, are: Reasonably experienced, we can play, the equipment we have is not restricting our ability, etc. He’s asking the questions I’d want to ask :)

Pete is a monster player, but he's confusing the hell out of the poor Captain. The whole thing could be summarized into: "you're in Dm, right? You know your minor pentatonic, so play that, and here's some notes you can add for colour. If we add X we get dorian, which sounds funky; if we add Y we get aeolian, which sounds folksy, etc." It's a gross oversimplification, but it's a start.

Lee you are always so self deprecating about your guitar playing, I feel like im similar to you in that respect a common line from me "if im the best guitar player in the room...its not a very good room" but at the end of the day i think you are a really good player, you have a great feel and you hold rhythm solid as a rock in many different styles...it has been nice to see you improve so drastically over the last year or so, rock on man....and dont put yourself down so much!

Gents, absolutely the BEST lessons I’ve ever had. Lee asks exactly the same questions I would. Which is great psychoanalysis because Lee and I both over think playing and also lack a plan of note to land on. It is at once being planned and also not overthinking to allow your fingers to go outside of your normal muscle memory. Pete you are an epic teacher in this series. Please keep doing this! Thank you both and I bought the tracks.

Thank you so much for putting the album of backing tracks together. As a complete novice, the tracks, a quick look at Bea's lesson on the pentatonic scale, plus these two lessons are all I needed to suddenly be able to improvise something that sounded vaguely like music! Dear Lee, you remind me so much of the frustrated Luke Skywalker aboard the Millennium Falcon, trying to get to grips with a light sabre for the first time. Let go your conscious self! You don't have to worry too much about things fitting into scales or what the intervals or notes you're targetting are yet - just look what notes your fingers are on in the different chords and target those notes - even if you don't know what notes they are or what scale they belong to. You'll find them an octave higher and lower easily - and see they're all nice and close to the main pentatonic scale you'd usually use to play over the progression. You can use that to knit everything together. You can totally do it! Now try it with the blast shield down... :)

Lee you're an absolutely top bloke, wonderful player and promising padawan! I'm in a very similar position to you at the moment, trying to bust out of pentatonics, without really understanding modes - but it doesn't matter! We have the force - we just have to turn off our targetting computers and reach out with our feelings! Go grab those notes that you can see are in the chords and then find your way to the next chord... you're almost there! Good luck and thanks for such an inspiring channel :)

I am a little older than you, Lee, and am on a similar journey to you, so I feel your pain. It has taken me a long time to realize that one of the barriers that I have inadvertently to learning more, and which I have put in my own way, is not learning the notes on the guitar fingerboard. I am now working to address that, and strongly recommend it to others. That way, you will not "accidentally end of a target note that sounds nice". I must admit that I learned the notes of the chords in terms of 1, 4, 5 and so on, but to know them by name is another matter, and helps one to see patterns on the neck. I also think that the CAGED system is a wonderful help in breaking out of playing that relies on pentatonic boxes by playing notes of the chords which are not in the pentatonic scales..

Great job guys! Most people saying that Danish Pete is a 'not very good tutor' obviously haven't done much teaching. Explaining this kind of theory and approach isn't easy, and students have different learning styles. One-on-one classes are quite intense and difficult for both teacher and student in some ways. If the tutor goes into too much detail some students will get bored (why the hell do I need to know what the Lydian b7 Mode is?), you don't go into enough detail and other students will think they're not getting decent VFM and not being challenged (why is my tutor explaining this when I could probably get a better explanation by watching KZbin, buying a magazine or using simply my own brain a little bit?). Maintaining that balance is very tricky. Well done to Pete in doing a better job in his second language than many native English speaker guitar tutors can do in their first! Well done to Lee, for trying to get playing outside the box a bit more.

Once again, hitting it out of the park. Lee catching lightning in a bottle a few times. A lot of the comments shitting on Pete for repeating (sad trombone) constantly; that’s teaching. Lee, you don’t have to verbalize everything Pete is saying, just play the riff. The comedic chemistry is off the charts good, but as a lesson, ouuufff frustrating. The good news, I can see a change in Lee’s approach to filling in the sound as opposed to “soloing”, which is the whole damn point isn’t it! Well done boys! Ps. I’m buying these tracks Pete. You are the cats ass! 🙌🏼

Please just learn the major scale in chords and then 3 to 4 note simple arpeggios of those chords and the fretboard opens up completely. That's the spring board to blues and jazz and you then realise you can play as many wrong notes over a V7 chord as you like as long as you land on its root, 5 or 7. Jazz musicians have been getting away with it for 80 years. But it all starts with the harmonised major scale.

BUT I have to say these lesson vids are pure gold and can we have more of them please?! Your demonstartors are great players and they all could have a series of lesson videos that show how they do what they do (Joss would be a great example or Ariel Posen, I would eat 10 yards of sh*t for a lesson from him). Personally, you've already gone to the top shelf and started with Pete. Great lessson, great tips. Thanks!

To be honest the captain is missing too much fundamental theory to be asking Pete to reach him much other than shapes and licks. He needs a more structured course. Not really Pete's fault as people seem to think. Not counting the duplicate E string you effectively have 5 mini pianos all tuned differently that you have to play over in a grid. There's a ton to learn.

Captain, you can play a major pentatonic over the 1 chord in a dominant 7 blues - just move the pentatonic shapes down 3 frets and play it there - so shape 2 in the shape 1 position for example.

Love that Starplayer TV, exactly the same as mine (surf green). Sounds much better in Pete’s hands though - wonder if I’m missing a tone switch or something... 😳

Trying to help; captain learn the intervals in major and minor scales. Then lead how chords are constructed from those intervals. Then go to your scale shapes and learn where all the scale intervals are (1,3,5,7 etc). Then learn how to harmonise the major and minor scales (which chords are always major or minor in a scale). Then you will know enough to start mapping notes to backing and why. That would be a good place to start asking Pete the questions you are asking him now.

I'm learning and these lessons are beyond me, but they really are inspiring. I love metal and rock riffs but I find myself aspiring now to play slower 'made up' music that just simply 'feels' good. Thanks!
