Mother grieves loss of 17-y-o asthmatic daughter

MARCH 1, 2021: The only money Narda McKoy had in her purse was her 17-year-old daughter’s college tuition, but she would have spent every cent without hesitation Friday night for some oxygen at the University Hospital of the West Indies (UHWI), where she had pleaded her guts out for help for nearly two hours. No help came, McKoy said, and her daughter, Jalisa McGowan, who had ambitions of becoming a visual artist, slipped from her arms, turning her world upside down.

This is heartbreaking. When we entered medicine we swore to do no harm and to make it our duty to help. How can this doctor live with herself? This is especially hard because I was child in Jamaica with asthma and the experiences during my illness informed my choice to become a doctor to help others. If things truly happened this way, this doctor should lose her license.

Agreed. I am a registered nurse here in the states and this is truly heartbreaking to hear. I remember last year I had to travel to Jamaica to tend to my grandmother in Princess Margaret hospital due to the lack of compassion from the doctors. Had I not gone down there at that time and transferred my grandmother to a private hospital in Kingston, she sadly wouldn’t have made it. This story is so sad and I pray for her strength as a mother

I am a Jamaican living in the US and working as an RN. I worked as a pediatric nurse and deal with asthmatic children frequently. Whenever a child comes in wheezing it is treated as an emergency. Instantly the child is assessed and 02 is administered . These healthcare providers are negligent. This need to stop.

my son is a chronic asthmatic he has a pump and a nebalizer machine .The pump don't always work but the nebalizer machine works during emergencies. when I do take him to the emergency room here in NY and I say he's wheezing, immediately a doctor is attending to him no mater how crowded the waiting area is. Once I walk in and say my son has Asthma and is wheezing he is taking immediately . This woman's story touch me to the core.

I had a similar experience with my daughter when I took her to the ER at the university hospital one night.it was a good security who wheeled my daughter cause there was no Porter and after waiting 2 hours without any attention we ended up at medical associate that night.Thank god my one daughter survived . that was about 4 months ago.

Its it's tough at these hospitals. Especially at the UWI hospital. The workers from doctors to porters have attitude. I know what this mom is going through because I have had first hand experience there. Big up to Cornwall regional hospital.
