It appears that Salema wanted to take a taxi due to her busy schedule for the day. She mentioned that she had to show you around in just 2 hours because she had to babysit. In such a situation, it would have been considerate to ask her if she had the time to wait for a bus with you before assuming that she was available. This situation reminded me of your Kamila's Kitchen video when you arrived ahead of schedule, and she appeared unprepared and busy. Being mindful of other people's time is important, and it would have been a thoughtful gesture. Nevertheless, I still enjoyed the video.

Maroons came with Jews in 1494. They are ancient moors. I have the historical records in a very expensive book. I can give it to you coco boy. The English came to Jamaica with slave in the late 1600s-1838. Maroons were never slaves or escaped slaves. They were in Jamaica before.

Hello Cocoboy. Great Insiste into the Marroon culture. Here is what I found about the Sankofa (pronounced SAHN-koh-fah) is a word in the Twi language of Ghana meaning “to retrieve" (literally "go back and get"; san - to return; ko - to go; fa - to fetch, to seek and take) and also refers to the Bono Adinkra symbol represented either with a stylized heart shape or by a bird with its head turned backwards while its feet face forward carrying a precious egg in its mouth. Sankofa is often associated with the proverb, “Se wo were fi na wosankofa a yenkyi," which translates as: "It is not wrong to go back for that which you have forgotten."

In 1739-1740, the British government signed a treaty with the maroons because they realised that they couldn't defeat them, they are not indegenious to Jamaica, the Spanish took west Africans to Jamaica from the Iberian peninsula, so the first africans were in Jamaica from the 15th century, they ran into the mountains when the English invaded in 1655, during the fighting they ran away, the Spaniards called them cimmarons, meaning,"wild", there are maroons in almost all other Carribbean 🏝️, and places in central America, but Man, when you are in Jamaica, and you look around and you see the blue skies, you believe you are in paradise, you can feel life is in you,no chains ⛓️ can hold you, your flesh cries out for FREEDOM, you have to be free and feel free

Boy, am little bit disappointed on the history lesson about maroons. It was so spotty at best. Maroons were runaway slaves, especially in the time of the Spanish rule the early 1500's - 1655 AD. When the British defeated the Spanish, they tried to capture those free slaves, but they were defeated many times. So, other slaves keep on running away and join the maroons. This was costing the British Empire a fortune. I personally believe that the slaves at one point could have overthrow the English, but they did not want the country to be isolated like their neighbor, Haiti. After many failures and a heavy economical cost to the government of the day, they met and struck a peace treaty with the maroons. This was the very first time I think the mighty English was brought to its knees. That peace treaty allowed any person from the Maroon communities to have their freedom to do whatever, without governments input. The treaty is still valid to this day.

Omg, I grew up in that area of Portland, a few districts further away in the hills and we never pay any attention to the fact that Charles Town is a community separate and apart from the surrounding communities. The maroon descendants need to have a stronger representation in the region, so every adult and child is aware of its history. From here in the diaspora, it's nice to see that my childhood community is featured.

Please explain to us how all maroons are sell outs! Who did they sell out and why? You yourself are regurgitating a narrative! Nanny, a national hero of Jamaica is a maroon. When some Jamaicans go on social media and tell the Hatians to go back home because they do not have the resources to help them, how is that different from what some maroons did? Every group seem to be choosing self preservation instead of being wiped out by the enemy or peceived threat to their quality of life. Can we now say Jamaicans are sell outs to the black race? Make it make sense! Some of the maroons signed a treaty with the Bristish to maintain peaceful relations whilst others like Nanny our national hero strongly opposed it. Be fair and balanced with your assessment instead issuing a collective condemnation of all maroons. I am not a maroon but I did history!

The maroons joined the British and successfully, defeated the Spaniards Jamaica kicking them off of island and some maroons turned on each other. There’s been cases where maroons returned run away slaves back to their slave masters and wanted criminals such as Paul Bogle, a national hero to authorities. The maroons are a joke. Best travel to Suriname 🇸🇷. They’ve good maroons who work together and not back stab each other.

@@AbstractDivinity1 On one hand you are saying there are/were good maroons and on the other hand you are saying the collective is a joke. It's the double talking for me. Anyway the negative views and mentality you highlighted about the maroons permeates Jamaican society today, so I suppose all Jamaica needs to be judged. And as is typical of us we lift others ( Suriname maroons) and pull down our own ( local maroons).
@AbstractDivinity1
@AbstractDivinity1 8 ай бұрын
@@chatteachattea I never once said the Jamaican maroons were good. Take your time reading my posts. Jamaican maroons are cut throat and it’s been well documented. I’m not one of those Jamaicans who sugarcoat statements to fit my narrative. My opinion is if the maroons worked as a collective by putting their differences aside Jamaica would’ve been an independent nation way before Haiti.

The origins of the Maroons date back to 1655 around the time when Tainos and Africans who were freed by the Spanish took to remote parts of the island for refuge from the English invasion and to establish settlements. So Maroons were captured by the Spanish in Africa, many as soon as they arrived escaped enslavement, or escaped when the Spanish were expelled from the Island, but undoubtedly they were here before the British because the Spanish brought them here as SLAVES. Maroons are not East African, they are West Central African.
@CC-xe5mp
@CC-xe5mp 7 ай бұрын
The term maroon was coined by the Spanish which means 'wild cow', so it was a name attributed to slaves and has no bearing on their origins. The slaves captured by the Spanish were from many different places in Africa and many escaped slaves settled in a place called Juan De Bolas in St Catherine which was named after a Spanish captain. When the British fought off the Spanish, they brought Coromantee slaves. These slaves joined with other free slaves but they spoke several different languages, so they tried to get them all to speak Coramantee and they all continued to fight until the Treaty. The Treaty meant that they agreed not only to not help any runaway slaves or lead any further rebellion, but in return for the land, they would also return runaway slaves and in exchange receive a pig. In the end they supported the slave masters against their fellow slaves. There is no place in Africa called 'Maroon' so I always wonder why they do not adopt their own name, their original tribal names as opposed to proudly bearing that name that the oppressor gave them. It is not only the people who call themselves 'Maroons' who have ancestors who were runaway slaves or fought slave masters. Even the Taino's who are the real indigenous people of Xaymaica fought against the Spanish slavemasters, some of them even choosing to commit suicide rather than be enslaved. The history of resistance is the history of Jamaica, not just those who call themselves 'Maroons'. All Jamaican's of African or Taino descent have ancestors who fought against slavery, burnt down plantations and escaped their enslavers. When we look at the whole truth, we all have a history to be proud of and this should be something which unites and not divides us.

Not true...Maroons are Africans who were originally brought here from Afrika...to be slaves......the majority were enslaved and lived on the plantations ..but some refused to remain in slavery on the plantations...so they ran away from the plantations and formed communities high up in the interior of Jamaica...where they waged war against the British...attacking and burning the plantations periodically and escaping back to the hills....they also encouraged other slaves to join them in their settlements in the hills...to fight the British....until a Peace Treaty was signed with the British...Officially recognizing them as free people and giving them large acres of land in the hills to live on...some historians wrote that some Maroons were traitors to the run away slaves and would often return them to the Slave Owners on the Plantations... ..do your research before becoming a tour guide...you should not give out incorrect information to strangers....There is also another Maroon Settlement on the other side of the island called...Accompong Town...in St Elizabeth...
