Hi Irena, I was in Jamaica last month and I had no problem at all. My daughter and I spent 4 days in Montego Bay and 3 days in Negril, and we had a great time. At no time were we in danger or fearful of anything or anyone. We had a rental car and we went to different parts of Jamaica and never once had any problems. I can’t wait to get back there. Thanks so much for the update on the travel advisory. And thanks for the great things you are doing for Jamaica and Jamaicans all over the world. We appreciate you.

We spent 5 weeks in Jamaica this past February. I had a fall and required medical treatment for a laceration. We are Canadians and have relatively low-cost medical care in Canada provided to us. I noticed no discernable difference for the medical care provided in Jamaica except the emergency service was considerably quicker (no wait) in Jamaica (Negril) than in Canada! It was expensive in Negril, fortunately we had travel medical insurance.

Thanks to all the African Vloggers (Dee Mwango, African Tigress, Miss Trudy and Wode Maya) who visited Jamaica despite the American travel advisories. Thank you to all the other foreign visitors such as Po'Jo the Backpacker and Bless Up Jess who visited Jamaica and ignoring the travel advisory. It's odd that a violent country like America is advising their citizens about Jamaica despite all the shootings which occur in American cities.

I think they have their people who check the internet, and lots of retirees moving back because of the medical care. I can't believe the US issued crime advisory to Jamaica. The US crime rate is very bad. I don't go out at nights, and I am always looking over my shoulder. I am so pleased of how you covered Treasure Beach. I love Treasure Beach and I am hoping to see it up and running ASAP. some people collect money and put it in their pocket. I get upset when I see and hear certain things. The US and UK's travel advisory for Jamaica, has been one of my biggest gripes, these past couple of months. Yes there are problems with crime, etc, but is Jamaica's crime rate higher than the mass shootings in the US or the daily stabbing death's here in the UK ... I wonder. Thank you for this update, Irina.
@JAMAICAWITHIRIE
@JAMAICAWITHIRIE Ай бұрын
Jamaica's homicide rate is higher than in the US/UK, however, this is because of HOW homicide rate is calculated, not because there is more crime happening in Jamaica. 1. For example, deaths that occur from gang related crime are counted in Jamaica towards "homicides count" , in fact this is the majority of all homicides. In the US deaths from similar crime would not be counted towards homicides, they would go into a separate category (organized crime, terrorism etc). 2. Also, rates of crime/shooting doesn't translate into whether the place is safer or more dangerous. Because in Jamaica crime is often gang related, people who are not involved in gangs and who have no relatives involved are generally safe. Whereas in the US/UK stubbing/shooting is often random and the goals of such attacks are drastically different, which means anyone is at the risk of being a victim. 3. More importantly, nobody ever checks US crime rate for "aggravated assaults". It's over 200 (compared to rate 5.0 for homicides in the US and around 40 for homicides in Jamaica). This means that the number of attacks in the USA actually happen more often than in Jamaica in 5 times! (the rate for aggravated assaults in Jamaica is around 38). Basically, because most of these attacks in the US happen in big cities near hospitals - people often survive these attacks, but how does this make US safer than Jamaica? -- "You'll be stubbed/shot, but don't worry, you'll survive!" - this is what I get when they brag about how low their homicide rate compared to Jamaica.

No That's not what it is!!. It has to do with Jamaica NOT agreeing with the US Government/Biden Administration on accepting a Gay Man who is Married to a Man and they wanted to Place him in Jamaica to work at the Embassy as the New US Ambassador to Jamaica.! (Am not very sure of the position)!! BUT The Prime Minister of Jamaica said No we will tolerate this kind of Behavior in our Country. We JAMAICANS do not accept this kind of Relationship. And now the US seeks to play Sabotage on our Country and its People. So they are putting out Negative information about Jamaica such as these Travel Advisory. And as I write this comment TODAY 8-4-24 they are even doing it at the Olympics! Several Athletes Ran their Race in Track n Field and Won the 100m and we were all shocked when the judges change something and gave the Win to Lyles. No wonder Shelly and Sherika dropped out of the womens 100m. They are once again punishing Jamaicans aboard for something our Government and the people of our Country don't believe in.

But the change is not far enough for me, and since their health care system pretty much murdered my sister and almost murdered my new born grand niece while Jamaica's health care system kept my Mom alive and did a fabulous job delivering my twin grand niece and nephew with absolutely no complications. I can say they are right don't expect the same health care in the US as you would get in Jamaica. I am not being unrealistic, Jamaica's system is not perfect but it's not what goes in the US though.

Hi Irena. Love all your shows which are very informative. Have a question: is it true they've found oil off the coast of Jamaica? I wanted to know if you could explore this and give us a programme on this. If they have, what would this mean for the island in terms of energy prices. The environmental impact to the south coast and the island in general. Would Jamaica quickly turn into a Dubai, devoid of any natural beauty and over crowded? Would be a very interesting programme. 🙂

@@StarrTile it's amazing how your sentence includes "and I can own as many guns as I want" and you don't even realize the irony of how your perception of violence is normalized in the USA that you think that owning a gun is a sign of a peaceful and safe country.. Of course Jamaica is and will always be a 3rd world country, because it was never a participant of the cold war between the US and USSR. The term "3rd world" comes from the division into 1st word countries (those against USSR), 2nd world (those pro-USSR) and 3rd world (those who are neutral). And the irony is that you're saying "Jamaica won't come up to the times", while you yourself are stuck in the 1960s-1990s with these "cold war" terms and a way of thinking. It's amazing, I'm saving your comment for the record.

Small business in Jamaica are expensive. The drivers in Jamaica are extremely expensive. They want $300 to go from Montego Bay to Kingston Jamaica, one way.. that’s ridiculous
@JAMAICAWITHIRIE
@JAMAICAWITHIRIE Ай бұрын
Yes, it's ridiculous, the driver should be charging at least 350 USD or more. If the driver is charging 300, he's only earning around 9.50 USD per hour, which is a very low rate, especially when compared to how much US drivers earn. Here are the details: It is 105 miles (170 km) between Montego Bay and Kingston. First, what are the rates for a taxi service in the USA to cover the same distance? According to taxi-calculator, it's 2.18 USD per km, so it would be 370 USD if you were take the same trip in the USA, even though the fuel is very cheap in the USA compared to how much fuel costs in Jamaica. Now back to the trip in Jamaica, here are the costs: - 80 USD = fuel required for this trip (note, the driver will need to come back with no passengers) - 60 USD = toll fee for this trip So, it costs 140 USD just for fuel and toll. Then the expenses of owning a van itself. It costs 60,000 USD to buy it, so this is the base loan that the driver has to pay + interest. OR he has to pay the owner of the van at least 40% of whatever he earns after fuel/toll. So, out of 300 USD that you pay to the driver, this is what he gets: 300 - 140 (fuel+toll) - 64 (to the owner/loan) = 96 USD. He also needs to include the costs of licenses, public liability insurance to transfer passengers and the costs of maintenance into his price. It comes to the total around 400 USD per month (20 work days), so about 20 USD per day. So, for this trip additional 20 USD is cut for this, the driver is left with 76 USD. Considering the trip from Montego Bay to Kingston and back is at least 8 hours in total from the moment he leaves home and comes back and he's charging 300 USD, he earns 76/8 = 9.5 USD per hour. The reason I know all this is because I was thinking of offering cheap transportation services, but when I did my maths and calculated the expenses I realized that 300 USD would not be enough to make this work. If you don't like private driver prices, you can always take Knutsford Express from Montego Bay to Kingston, it's about 32 USD per person one way. I hope this helps.

Jamaican living in Jamaica and I was not angry at the travel ban. Yes walking on the road is not a death sentence but living here the corruption is out of control. Police officers are overly aggressive and treat common citizen like shit. My experience and a lot of others I know personally. Our public healthcare system is a shame and I would hate to ever have to go to the hospital for myself. apart from love on visits or assisting my sickly grandmother. I truly understand why ppl are running from Jamaica. Job opportunities is limited and the jobs you do get pay shit pay even with your degree. Idc how this is received because there’s no lie in it. I pray and keep sourcing a way off with whatever youth I have left. Yes as a tourist I’m sure you’ll be fine but to live here without serious money 😵‍💫

Actually, Canada has its Travel Advisory for the USA, it's at Level 1 "Take normal security precautions", but it has a lot of warnings about crime in the US, listing gun violence, terrorism etc, also special warning about the border with Mexico: travel.gc.ca/destinations/united-states New Zealand places US at level 2 with "Exercise increased caution" and extensive warnings about crime, www.safetravel.govt.nz/united-states-america UK doesn't have a "level" system for its travel advisories, but it has a travel warning for the USA due to crime and terrorism: www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/usa/safety-and-security So, yes, there are travel advisories that warn people about the USA, though people don't usually read them.

good question. This does happen sometimes, but very rare. In most cases American citizens who get attacked are actually Jamaicans with US citizenship who are involved in some illegal activities here in Jamaica and in the US. Their names sometimes given out in the local media, but in most cases - the victims are protected (to protect their family members), so the information of "who and where" is not open to the public.

I'm from Ukraine, but I lived in England for 6 years before. I came to Jamaica 10 years ago with my Ukrainian husband and our 2 Ukrainian children. We chose Jamaica because it is statistically one of the best places in the world to live. I did research, checked ALL countries and applied the criteria I had - Jamaica came right at the top of the list. At that time I hadn't known anything about Jamaica and never visited, but I trusted my research and was right. For more information, you can check the video on my channel that explains how that happened. @@mryardiedescendant yes, Ukraine is far worse than Jamaica right now, but that's not the reason why I came to Jamaica 10 years ago. Jamaica is my 10th country where I live - before that I lived in 9 other countries, including the UK and USA. I never planned to stay in Jamaica for so long - the plan was to stay for 1 year and then move to Costa Rica. However, I just fell in love with Jamaica, not just the island itself, but more so the people here - very sincere, straightforward, genuine, fun. I don't know why you would Advocate to take the medical off of the advisory, I can tell you firsthand experience the medical facilities and most of the training of the professionals is abysmal, not to even mention the ambulance services which are slow to come and Personnel are under trained. And yes the police services are slow and under-trained and corrupt. I understand fully Your Love of Jamaica but it is disingenuous to disregard the reality of the so-called Professional Services when Jamaica is and always will be third world.
@JAMAICAWITHIRIE
@JAMAICAWITHIRIE Ай бұрын
"why you would advocate to take medical off": the short answer is: because it's irrelevant for US citizens. The long answer: 🟢 #1. Medical services in Jamaica in private hospitals are better than the same type of services in the USA. The staff at private hospitals are highly trained and perform everything, from simple things to difficult surgeries very well. I know this from personal experience, from the experience of Airbnb guests and from doing the research. Example of such private hospital? Hospiten in Montego Bay or Tony Thwaites Wing in UWI in Kingston . ➡️ The problem is that these services might cost a lot of money, so local people don't always have the access to them, unless they have proper insurance plan. HOWEVER, when foreigners visit Jamaica - they always have Traveler's insurance that covers these services. 🟢 #2. Ambulance services work really well for tourists in most cases and are much faster than in the USA on average. This is because every resort has a contact with the nearest hospital and the hospitals are located near the resorts. If a tourist needs an ambulance - he/she gets it as a priority service because the resort has a contact with them. This ride costs from 100 USD, but it is covered with the traveler's insurance. Airbnbs would usually also have a direct contact for ambulance to call in case of emergency. Tour companies and professional tourist drivers (e.g. JUTA) would normally also have emergency numbers to call in case of an accident. ➡️ But yes, there are problems with ambulances in Jamaica, they are related to other issues. For example, residents can also use these paid ambulance services, but some might not be aware of them or choose not to use them because they are expensive, hence they rely on public hospitals instead. Public hospitals often don't have properly staffed ambulance with proper equipment and indeed sometimes don't come as fast as they should. The other problem is that in some cases private houses in Jamaica don't have a proper address, so it might take longer to find them, which causes further delays, unlike the situation with hotels, which location is easy to find. HOWEVER, none of these issues are relevant to US citizens travelling to Jamaica and that's why this information should not be in Travel Advisories for them. 🟢 #3. Travel Advisories for many islands in the Pacific Ocean are at Level 1, even though many of them simply have NO medical services at all, so tourists visiting them would have to spend many hours travelling by boat to the nearest island and then fly on a plane and only then they would reach a hospital. So, why are these countries at Level 1 and Jamaica is now at Level 2 and was at Level 3 for medical services? Why having no healthcare service at all results in Travel Advisory Level 1? Makes no sense. Some countries have exactly the same description in their travel advisory when it comes to healthcare, for example - Jamaica, Fiji and Cabo Verde are pretty much the same (their country page features almost identical information about medical services). However, Fiji and Cabo Verde are at Level 1, while Jamaica was Level 3 and now Level 2 for Healthcare. Again, makes no sense. 🟢 #4. Removing (H) warning from the Travel Advisory doesn't mean that there will be no information about healthcare. Each country has a Country Page on the Department of State website. Each travel advisory says "read the country page" and the link is provided. All countries have their medical/healthcare information there and it makes zero sense pushing it into Travel Advisory, unless it's something like an outbreak of a disease or something. --- 🟢 CONCLUSION: These are the reasons why I'm advocating to remove "Medical services Level 2 warning" from the Travel Advisory and just leave it where it belongs - in the country page, like it's done for other countries, some of which don't have such developed healthcare for tourists like Jamaica does. Note, I've explained all of it already in the full video where I debunked the travel advisory, so feel free to watch it for more details.

@@JAMAICAWITHIRIEthis only applies if you are in a busy tourist area. You would be hard pressed to get an ambulance in many areas still outside a north coast resort. You still have to pay upfront despite insurance. You’re going first to a public hospital unless your in Kingston or where that other one is. If you can afford it still. Many vacationers still cannot.
@StarrTile
@StarrTile Ай бұрын
@JAMAICAWITHIRIE you covered a wide swath of this topic in your response and that is appreciated, perhaps more by other people than myself. Hospiten honestly is not very old, I was around when they built it, and it's in mobay... if you were on the Negril or Sav, or other spots on northcoast you're in trouble, even Ochi doesn’t have a "proper" hospital..visit the one in St Ann's Bay, it's atrocious. Also you assume that tourists have medical on their travel insurance, in fact you assume that all tourists have travel insurance which is not the case. I'm going to forget the crime for just a minute because as you said most crime is Jamaican on Jamaican and not in the tourist sector... but just for argument's sake you are on your way to the airport and the taxi gets in an accident, a pretty bad accident where you are injured, to get that golden hour rolling the ambulance would almost have to be on its way already, and staffed with people that know what they're doing at at least EMT 2 level (paramedic). And if you should be lucky enough to make it to the hospital in time, he would have to count on competent medical staff. As you mentioned already it is pretty much COD, even if you had travelers insurance they only reimburse you for expenses so you still have to have some cash in your pocket or enough on your credit card to cover medical expenses. I won't go into all the various scenarios that could possibly happen but a car accident is very viable and it happens every day. The only thing I would advocate for would be insurance that would cover the 10 grand plus to LifeLight you to Miami where you could get proper care... assuming that the helicopter staff and hospital and such are on point to get you there in time and provide proper Medical Care on the flight... The whole thing is a nightmare that nobody would want to be involved in and comes down to 3rd world soon come mentality. Hotels are but a small portion of possible sickness/injury issues, as mentioned they have almost an obligation to care for you. But there is a whole and huge other sector of visitors to Jamaica who have apartments, condos, Airbnb, etc. that need to worry more about proper medical care should they need it. When the advisory talked about there being less quality medical ( in all facets ) they were 100% correct. Even jumping off cliffs at Rick's, 4wheelin, horseback riding, para sailing, none of those activities are insured, in fact you sign off your rights to even sue them when you partake 🟢CONCLUSION In my 21 years of history in JA I was less worried about crime and MORE worried should I get in an accident !!!.....having said that, I wished it was easier to own a gun than it is. More criminals have them than citizens, but that's a whole different story/issue.

@StarrTile Go away old creep. No one wants to hear the hatred you are spewing. I live in America and just spent 12 hours in Emergency at the hospital and did NOT see a doctor and had to leave. I left prople there who were sitting for over 15 hours because there were NO BEDS. I went to an Urgent Care and spent 2 hours and they could NOT help me as I needed an Ultrasound which they did not have at that Urgent Care. And I live in the suburbs of Washington DC. And yes, I am in a very good job with EXCELLENT insurance coverage, and I will have to pay $150 for the Emergency visit even though I was NOT diagnosed and did NOT see a doctor and had to leave the hospital at 2 a.m. in the morning because I had a flight to catch at 6 a.m. and had to be at the airport at 3:30 a.m. I have to pay $15, $30, or $45 for every visit to every doctor even though my company and I pay $22,000 per year for health insurance. And, if I have to make an appointment to see a doctor I have to give my insurance particulars before they even take my name. I pay a portion for medication, and for any type of therapy I have to pay $25 each visit. My brother who had to use an ambulance once had to pay even though he had full insurance coverage and when he passed away they were still sending bills in the thousands of dollars for hospital fees. You are acting as if the Jamaican health care is worst than anywhere else. Pregnant black women in America are afraid of having their children in hospitals because of the mortality rates, and I have been given wrong medication which almost took my life. So please, stop talking about Jamaican doctors and nurses not being professionals. In many many hospitals in America they use Doctor's Assistants and not accredited doctors to treat patients. And there are many cases where unqualified doctors, nurses, and medical people somehow manage to beat the system and end up treating patients until they are discovered to be bogus medical people. The United States recruit our nurses, doctors, teachers, and our professionals who are HIGHLY trained IN JAMAICA. Why the HELL are you talking down our education in Jamaica? We have some of the most highly trained professional people in the world who can be found working in various capacities all over North American countries. Many more hospitals are needed in Jamaica, and the health care in Jamaica is not perfect but people get excellent care when they get treated and I have first hand proof with friends and family members who have cancer, diabetes, heart problems, and stroke who got excellent care and have lived and living happily after treatment in Jamaica the land of my birth and the Land that I Love.

@@StarrTile I remember our conversation earlier this year. There are 2 problems: - you share your view based on your experience as a resident in Jamaica, not being able to understand that tourists have very different experience. Try to remember your first impression about Jamaica and then think why you stayed here for so many years.. Well, tourists spend here only a few weeks. - problem #2 - your experience is out of date and you cannot understand that Jamaica has changed a lot in the last 10 years. When it comes to healthcare - the most rapid changes began from 2020 after Covid and are still happening. Negril got its own private hospital now, it's called "Omega Medical Hospital". It opened on 1 December 2022. There are no private hospitals in Ocho Rios yet, there was a project proposed in 2016, but I don't know what's with it, will find out. About Travel Insurance...
As a person who's traveled to 57 countries, this is what I know about Travel Insurance:
 Usually you never need to buy travel insurance separately, as it comes by default when you're booking a "package" (flight + hotel) via a tour operator. However, if you wish to BUY Travel Insurance, the one that includes medical coverage up to 500,000 USD - costs around $200, or between 5% and 6% of your total trip (not sure how my quick search on the internet is accurate though, as I didn't cross-referenced it). What I do know for sure is that a lot of banks provide Travel Insurance attached to the credit card by default when you book a trip. For example, Jamaican credit card from NCB includes coverage "Travel Medical Assistance up to US$25,000" (personal travel), while NCB business card has "International Medical Emergency up to US$150,000" and "Travel Accident Insurance up to US$500,000" for business travel. I'd be surprised to know that Jamaican banks provide Travel Insurance and US banks don't... There is absolutely no reason why somebody should not have Travel Insurance when they travel.

As the most racist country in the world, the US will always adjust its language based not on the facts but on the predominant race of the country for which they are issuing the advisory. So don't expect the language to completely reflect the facts for Jamaica - it is, after all, a black country. However, I believe that your truths reached the local authorities which caused them to reach out to the US. It says a lot about Jamaica that you have to be guiding them to seek better for their own people.

I don't need to listen to the "real Jamaicans", as I live in Jamaica and used public hospitals myself during these 10 years on multiple occasions. Last time it was on the 6th of April this year, when I had covid and my blood pressure rapidly dropped to the critical level that my husband had to call the ambulance, as I was paralysed and could die. If we were in Montego Bay, I would have called the private ambulance and be taken to Hospiten, but we hadn't made any arrangements in Kingston yet, so my husband didn't know a private hospital to call, so it was UWI he contacted. The ambulance came in 11 minutes, I was taken to UWI's public hospital side. I was isolated from others (due to covid) in a small room, there was no A/C, no shower, no fancy equipment, no internet and no mobile phone reception for mobile data, BUT they did all the tests, treated me for 24 hours and saved my life. In the end I paid around 16,000 JMD for a lot of lab tests, but they didn't charge me anything for the ambulance, treatment, room or food. More importantly, if not for the Jamaican PUBLIC hospital - I wouldn't be alive now to make this video. So, yes, if you'd like to discuss Jamaican FREE healthcare system and FREE public hospitals, I'm happy to do so, but please remember, this video is about US Travel Advisory for US citizens. US citizens do NOT usually use public hospitals in Jamaica, so the subject of the quality of free healthcare in Jamaica and the subject of medical services for US travellers in Jamaica are two entirely different topics.
