The fact that Dreamworks has the best track record of amazing animated sequels is one of the many reasons why Dreamworks is my favorite animation studio. It’s sequels like the ones on the best list that absolutely breaks the notion that animated sequels are inherently bad.

I once heard someone perfectly explain why Disney sequels tend to suck while Dreamworks are great: Disney makes sequels for money, Dreamworks makes sequels to tell a story

For the most part, that statement rings true. Even if you exclude the Direct to DVD films, Disney's theatrical sequels despite having a higher quality rate in the visuals, have yet to be better than their predecessors. Pixar and DreamWorks a majority of the time can make great follow ups that are either as good as or are even better than the original. Disney Animation still has yet to learn. Which is why I'm hoping that the announcements of Moana 2 and Zootopia 2 will be the ones that turn the tide for WDAS feature canon.

12:09 The funny thing is, Disney actually did pitch a _Beauty and the Beast_ sequel. The idea was that Gaston's brother would'vetried used witchcraft to transform the Prince back into the Beast and frame Belle for it, ultimately ruining their lives, and later trying to kill them before being killed himself by the Beast. Disney rejected this idea supposedly because it wouldn't have been marketable to have Beauty and the Beast when one wasn't the Beast. So instead they followed up on the film with direct-to-video midquels, the first being a Christmas special (that sucked) and the other being a television series - one that never got off the ground and was compiled into a 'movie' - which ALSO sucked. So yeah, a sequel wouldn't have definitely been out of place.

10:00 One of the things I’ve noticed in this sequel isn’t just that the animation is getting weaker and the jokes are getting weaker, but it doesn’t feel like Beauty and the Beast to me and instead feels like an abysmal sitcom about constant bickering. And this sequel has the clearest example of that happening.

I can see that I would agree when you say surf's up 2 is the worst@@michaelmcjunkin1372 . Everything about it is awful the wrestler's voice acting, the sequel abandoning the documentary style filmmaking on the first film, Cody going back to being winning obsessed jerk all over again and the amount of bullying. (Cody being bulled by Tank while the Hang 5 give crap help and when Cody nearly ends up killing Joe-while he is not gulitless-he is blamed for everything and has to redeem himself by saving Tank. And no one apologizes to him or tells Tank to apologise. Seriously I do not blame you for putting surf's up 2 at number 1.

Dreamworks always made sure their sequels have at least something more to offer. Even Spirit Untamed (the weakest sequel) had something like you said in your review of it (I forgot which video, but he said that it’s at least a good movie for girls who love horses, as the protagonists are common folk rather than royalty). So of course all the best animated sequels are 80% Dreamworks. Sony can truly make the top tier masterpieces and unforgivable trash as the only official company made movie release is Surfs-Up 2, as at least Belle’s Magical World was from Disney Toons, not the main animation studio. Pixar (and Disney in general) really only had one sequel that reached peak perfection, as Toy Story 2 being the best list’s outlier makes sense.

I'm glad it's not just me who was dumbfounded by the awful Space Chimps 2! The first one was OK, but the sequel was so terrible I was shocked that a human being could even come up with something so utterly stupid. The plot involves Zartog stealing a device that makes anyone and anything disappear, so naturally he uses it on any of the heroes he meets. So, what do they do when he gets defeated? There's a button on the device that just makes everybody re-appear, easy-peasy. YES. IT REALLY IS THAT STUPID!!!!!!

I think the big problems with secret 2 our the following. One it was a film based sequel to a film adaptation based on a book that not a lot of people wanted to have me made. Even though they were actually ligitly published sequel novels that were written by the daughter of the guy who wrote the original book miss frisby and the rats of nihm. Also by the time the film sequel went into production and got finished. I think the original voice actress of miss frisby whjch changed to brisby to avoid a possible lawsuit . She had already passed away. The sequel film was probably a lot more expensive. Jenny was probably brought in for political gender related instead of rasco. That’s a speculative theory I have.

I’d agree with your improvements on surfs up 2. I would however remove wwe content, have the hang 5 be original characters that aren’t buff or based on real people, if tank was allowed the host should scold him and punish him for bullying, if tank was banned he should try and sneak in secretly to sabotage the competition, the host should hire a paid actor if he wanted to test the others, make it theatrical, have Cody be more likeable and finally bring big z and the other penguins from pengu island back so it makes more sense

In my honest opinion, I would easily add Boss Baby 2, Trolls 2 and 3 and Spirit Untamed because they are certainly the worst DreamWorks sequels ever made. DreamWorks only make these just to make a soulless cash grab with no heart no soul whats so ever. I am sorry. People nowadays are being way too generous and forgiving DreamWorks sequels. 🙄 I would put Open Season 2 & 3, Ice Age 5/6 and Hotel Transylvania 4 in the worst list. The only good DreamWorks sequels that I did loved are How to Train Your Dragon 2, Puss in Boots 👢 the Last Wish, Kung Fu Panda 2, Madagascar 3, and Shrek 2. I would also add the Rescuers Down Under, Despicable Me 2, Rugrats in Paris, Toy Story 2, Land Before Time 10 the Great Longneck Migration and Pokémon Lucario and the Mystery of Mew in the best list. 👌🏻

Hoodwinked too is ugly, not funny, the music is boring, the characters always argue, the villains are lame; there's no original songs like in the first movie. The story is too simple; Granny is captured, Red and Wolf have to save her and stop the villains; that's it! I saw this movie 2 times, it's enough. I won't watch this awful film again 🙂

Your TOP 5 is fun, because mine are the same movies, but at the upside down 😂. HTTYD 2 is completed by the 3 to keep his 1st place before Puss In Boots 2. And for Toy Story, I find the 3rd much better again than the 2nd! Roughtly at the same place than Puss In Boots 2. For my worsts, my worst Disney sesuel is Tarzan 2 (never seen Belle's Magical World, my pain patience has limits). And for other animation sequels I hate the most, I wanna said the 7 Alpha and Omega sequels (the 8th is the worst), and Sheeps and Wolves 2, than the 1st movie is already a very bad movie.

You know I think my mind keeps blocking out three of the five worst sequels. Haven’t seen Nim 2 and Beauty and the Beast midquel was meh (Loved the Christmas one). The rest, I’ve seen and I think actually done my best to forget. Their predosessors were actually pretty good movies on their own in my opinion and shouldn’t have gotten a sequel.

Belle's magical world, Atlantis 2, Tarzan and Jane are all AWFUL! The animation is cheap, the jokes are bad, the music is not memorable, the characters are annoying. It was a wrong idea to put 3 episodes for a show together. Disney wants to do it again with Moana 2. It didn't work in the past, why it would now? If the story is interresting and creative, the animation pretty and the songs originals ok. Not sure it will happen 🙁So far, the plot is very similar to Frozen 2; a mysterious voice called Moana and she explore a new location.
