Billy's interview gives "tehe I'm just a girl 🤭" energy when the topic he's discussing is not a lightweight issue and isn't anything to giggle abt.

Found your channel. I didn't know anything about James Baldwin but you've made me extremely engaged in this discussion. You're excellent and you deserve more subscribers.

Thank you thank you this perfectly describes how I feel about this topic. Billy don’t do it we don’t want a white washed biopic about one of our most radical black writers. Especially by someone who doesn’t understand intersectionality.

I totally agree. We need to bring queerness to the future and explore our potential, not our setbacks. It starts with us. 👽💚 🥳🎶🌈💚🏳️🌈🦄⚧️🏳️⚧️💖💙💜⚡🧠♾️

To “tell” the story of a figure that wrote/told his own story and documented a bountiful lot of subjective definitions, worldly desires, and conceptual distinctions very clear… I’m vexed.

I’m sure I’ve said this but I’m so glad I came across your channel. I remember reading the guardian article and having a visceral reaction- Baldwin has been a long time favourite of mine, simply because of his earnestness, his absolute commitment to finding humanity in a gross and Irgun cruel world. And to see his legacy reduced to prop up someone else’s fantasy of grandiose self has horrid. And disrespectful

Wait, I thought Coleman Domingo was playing Baldwin😳. I can’t see Porter playing Baldwin.

The queens English part took me out omg Billy is such a elitist. It’s giving black excellence talking points Im not that type of black I’m better than them I went to college. I talk right…. Omg it’s uncomfortable

I never saw the biopic about Elvis. I already knew that he groomed Priscilla when she was a teenager. He was also horribly racist, and not just stealing music from Black artists, but how he treated the artists themselves. Years ago, when someone from my local radio station was going around asking people what they thought about the then 25th anniversary of his death, the usual responses were all the same; “he was the king,” yadda, yadda. When the interviewer got to me and asked the same question, my immediate response was “Elvis was a racist cultural thief.” I went into to the history of him and other white artists stealing songs from Black artists and made them rich, while the Black artists died in poverty and near obscurity. Unfortunately and despite my reasons for NOT acknowledging his “work,” the interviewer continued to ask me why I’m denigrating Elvis. I finally got annoyed with his line of questioning, gave specific examples, and put it in a historical context. He then walked away from me and left the area. A few days later, someone found out who I was and started making death threats against me, with the usual racist and misogynistic (I’m a mixed Latina) comments. Fortunately, nothing came of the threats, but it also one of the many reasons that I eventually moved out of the US and have only returned a couple of times. Thank you for putting this up.

As great as the Malcolm X biopic was I hated the part that tried to make Dr. King look like a womanizer. A part of me feels like they told Spike: “Keep that in!”

Billy Porter is the wrong person to do this bio movie. He will try to change or overlook certain things about James Baldwin life to fit a certain narrative that will be totally against who Mr Baldwin was as a human being and activist.
@ladymsthing6056Ай бұрын
Everyone does that with Black American figures, all of our people and movements are co-opted.
