Harry Saltzman planned to use Lazenby in non-Bond productions, which unfortunately never came to fruition.

Although a different game from the original book, the whole game in Casino Royale is very close to the original Fleming novel. Fleming cranked up some tension in the original. Le Chiffre is a maths genius and knew every angle. Bond had to be at his very best in the book, and takes Le Chiffre with a brilliant bit of play. In this reworking the intelligence is that the winning hand would be recognised by a card player. It is not four Aces, the obvious choice, but a Straight is nearly impossible. This one is very clever. Bond creates a double-bluff when LeChiffre looks at the Dealer's cards, and can't believe that Bond will go all in on what appears to be nothing. Up until this time in the films, the Casino scenes seemed to be a means to an end; a set-up, or just to show the lifestyle Bond enjoys. In Casino Royale, it is so intrinsic to the plot that the whole big money game is shown in its entirety.
@official_alphabet_inc Жыл бұрын
You write as a typical movie critic. Not like a poker player. 1) Bond can't bluff here (unless he has no understanding of the game) Why would someone go "all in on what appears to be nothing", when there are two players who has already put all of their chps in (6 and 5 million respectively), and then the pot is raised to 12. The first player might have nothing, hoping to get everyone to fold (albeit unlikely, since there was already 61.5 million in the pot, meaning everyone with a pair of whatever would call). The second player definitively has something hand since he calls. The third player, the re-raising math genius, is especially likely to have a strong hand. Since he still have more chips behind, Bond can technically bluff him to fold. But... Bond goes all in with 14.5 million, only 2.5 million more than the wiz' raise, meaning there's no reason to fold. There's 112.5 million in the pot now, so 2.5 more is nothing in comparison. Secondly, even if Bond went all in with e.g. 100 million, holding "nothing" (e.g. 2 of hearts and 7 of diamonds ), Bond would win only 6 million (from Le Calculatrice) and lose everything else to one of the guys who went all in. This means that from Le Abaque's perspective, Bond definitively has a very, very strong hand. He cannot be dumb enough to be bluffing here. 2) The fact that Le Chips put 14 million on the table (but the dealer somehow counted it as 12 million) makes it even more unlikely that he'd fold, as it's only 0.5 million more. It also makes him look far from a math genius, as he seemingly can't do basic addition. 3) It's hard to make any assertive judgement about the quality of the play from any players, as we don't see the full hand played out. But one thing we can know for sure is that Le Cigarette is perhaps one of the most clueless hold'em players of all time. I say this because after this hand was finished, two players would be knocked out, Bond would've had 64 million chips left, and Le Chevre would've had 51 million chips left... but the latter left the table, thus forfeitng the game for no (good) reason. 4) To round this off: "(...) it is so intrinsic to the plot that the whole big money game is shown in its entirety." Firstly, "the whole big money game" probably lasted for hours - way longer than the runtime of the movie, so it wasn't shown in its entirety. Secondly, for the hands they *did* show in the movie (3 in total), we only see the complete hand in one single instance (the first one). So we only have one hand to judge these two guys from, and in this instance, the french dude played horribly by bluffing like a moron, but got extremely lucky on the river (the last card). So Mr. Math Genius is terrible at the game, according to the movie. And your analysis is way off.

@@official_alphabet_inc Sir, I would defer to anyone who knows Poker inside out. I must admit the closest I've come is watching short games in a couple of casinos, and some of the KZbin presentations, including Victoria Coren-Mitchell winning a record purse some years ago. Yes, your view of this is probably more expert than mine. The game in the film is edited and styled for dramatic purpose. However, if the game had been totally accurate it wouldn't have held the audience's attention. I viewed it in a cinema on premiere day, and the entire theatre was hooked. It might not have been the perfect game for purists, but that part of the film was a revelation in the rebooting of Bond in 2006.
@official_alphabet_inc Жыл бұрын
@@malcolmnicholas5931 After reading this response, I want to apologise if I was, or came of as, snarky. I might've misinterpreted your initial reply to some degree. I just get so annoyed when people assert so confidently regarding topics they have close to no knowledge of, and this is especially apparent here in the comment section. I wish more people was made aware of the Dunning-Kruger effect, or that I had the self discipline to not read the comment section at all. PS: I'm no expert though. I'm sure better players would be able to make much a stronger analysis of the game, while also being a lot less wordy😅 Also, I very much agree that this is the best casino-related scene in the Bond films, because the game is in focus, the play is exciting, AND it's more important to the story than just being a set piece. And I agree that they definitively had to cut the games like this in the movie to make it exciting for everyone. Although, I can't not be slightly annoyed by goofs like the dealer announcing a 12 million raise when the player clearly put 14 million chips on the table, and that whoever wrote the script decided that Le Chiffre should consider whether to call 0.5 or 2.5 million in a 114.5 or 112 million pot😄 They could easily improved the depiction of the game a lot by hiring an expert to look for such goofs, and to evaluate whether the hands played actually supported the story's intention (e.g. making Le Chiffre look like a strong player, and not a whale millionaire). But this would probably not be worth investment, because only those with a lot of hold'em knowledge AND those being annoying sticklers like me cares, haahhah!

@@official_alphabet_inc That is very kind of you, sir. I must admit, I love the observation of games. If I take part myself I've had very modest success. Usually £30 in the bank, and off for a small drink. I like to keep things in moderation, and watch my step. I think your own analysis is quite interesting. Yes, they could have brought someone in to observe, but there is also post-production where audio gaffes are frequent, visual and other errors. The character of Bond in the book is brilliantly observed. Fleming's knowledge comes to the fore. The matter-of-fact approach to gambling that Bond takes is akin to watching a Horse Racing gambler work out bets, and review his day's or evening's work accordingly; without emotion. If they reboot again, I hope the first scene is in a casino, as in "Dr No." Personally, I believe that would be a suitable start for the new 'chap'.

Bond wanted a private table to not just stay away from Shang Tsung, but to get some 1 on 1 with Kitana.

You truly can sense the characters are playing in high stake games. But the stress and seriousness of their facial expressions seem to always imply they are playing well beyond their bankrolls.

Why is it that every site claiming to know Bond is wrong? You've missed two films and yet you claim to have "every" James Bond casino scene. Such a pity.

33:34 Tipping the dealer won't work here. All the money is in escrow, which only Bond has access to, which means the dealer cannot cash the tip Bond gave him.... or am I missing something?
@rev86052 жыл бұрын
yes you are missing something, it is a movie!

No you're right, probably explains why the dealer looked so nonplussed about such a large tip
