On August 20, 2006, musical legend James Brown performed at what would be his final performance in San Francisco, CA.. He was the headliner of a two day musical festival known as the Foggfest, which took place at the Fort Mason meadow. Working closely with promoter Brian Martin, video producer Eric Predoehl documented this event for posterity, assisted by Karl Anderson III and James MacLeod. This is a condensed edit of the song "Sex Machine" - the final song of James Brown's performance that day. James Brown passed away 4 months later on Christmas Day - December 25, 2006. We share this clip to pay tribute to this unforgettable musician.

he died less than 2 months later and his body laid in a casket for 76 days. If that was not bad enough, Jacque Hollander filed a lawsuit against James and his estate for $106 Million claiming Brown raped her at gunpoint years before...wow kind of hard to RIP when attorneys are arguing over your estate and they won't lower you into the ground.

The amazing thing about this is that regardless of what Mr. Brown was going through it was still a great performance. The band was super tight and musical. Mr Brown's singing was not off beat at all and his phrasing was in rhythm. The energy was still at a high and inspirational level as you can clearly see how the audience was positively responding to it. I thought it was a great performance and just goes to show why he was and allways will be one of the all time greats.

People are not realising how good a performance this was. VERY rare for someone 70+ to still have that timing and most of all that amount of power in his voice. And completely in tune. A lot of singers lose that 40 years prior.

Gosh, I saw JB in Kansas City a month later, and it was quite apparent he wasn't well, but still trying to do his best. I remember thinking at one point that night it looked like he was physically really struggling just to make it through the song, nearly having to lean on the keyboard to catch his breath. Sure wished he would have admitted his ill health then and simply retired and taken a break before it broke him three mos later. I've seen nearly a dozen of his live shows since 1965...He was simply the greatest of all time.

There's no one like James Brown. Never was before him and never will be after him. To MJ's credit, JB was his idol and he learned all his moves from him, which the kiddos today don't realize.. He was my idol also. I saw him almost every time he played in LA, including his last performance, at the Hollywood Bowl. He also high-fived me once, during one of his House of Blues Hollywood concert. I was literally at his feet. at eye level with his boots, watching this legend dance and tap his groove. Another time, at HOB, Bill Murray, Bruce Willis and Dan Aykroyd were all together, watching his performance and also getting down, on the VIP balcony.. 12 years already now, that Funk is in heaven!!!

Wow, look at the smile on his face at the end while he's dancing. He probably knew he was in very ill health and probably getting close to death and yet he wanted nothing more than to share one more moment with his band and his audience. He was a complicated, deeply flawed and imperfect man but no one ever gave more of himself with passion, effort or intensity as James Brown did. His work ethic was from a different, harder time and few from this era could understand or keep up with him.

Of course he was sick, you can see it, but by the time he got on this stage, he had laid the foundation for soul, funk and hip hop, recorded the song say it loud, I'm black and I'm proud in 1968, calmed the anger in Boston after king's assassination with his music, kicked the door wide open for black musicians, music today doesn't say much of anything, James brown said, don't be a drop out, say it loud I'm black and I'm proud, I don't want nobody to give me nothing, open up the door, I'll get it myself, to tell you the truth, I don't think anyone in that audience knows who that little short black man in the blue suit is, bottom line, no Michael Jackson, no Prince, no Parliament funkadelic, no hip hop without this little shoe shine boy from Augusta Georgia

The industry uses and abuses artist they literally have you on stage until you drop dead in the floor but I guess this is what you signed up for when you start it but James Brown had no business on no damn stage he can even talk none whatsoever

PaulDA2000- Me and my 4 year old son went to his viewing/of the body, at the Apollo Theater, stood in line for 4 hrs. I brought a chair for my son to sit in. Al Sharpton was there, he and someone else, drove James Brown body to NEW YORK, Harlem, so that the body could be viewed on time. It was really sad, as a youngster, my father brought us tickets to see James Brown, everytime he came to our city/State, sometime two times a year. Back in the day, james brown would dance his ass off, on stage, he's very old on here, and stopped dancing or hardly dancing in his 40's, that's when I stop going to his concerts, but still brought all his music. RIP my brotha, RIP.............smdh

I saw him live at the Morris Civic auditorium in South Bend Ind. In 1966 or 67, I was 7years old. I saw him again as an adult at The Park West in Chicago around 1984. Amazing performances both times.
