Viewer Question:
Jaxon - Hey John. I just read a report that says Avatar The Way Of Water will pass the $1.48 Billion dollar mark of Top Gun Maverick by the end of Monday night. You and Rob told us to never doubt James Cameron, and it looks like you were right. How big of a deal is this and can it actually hit the $2 billion dollar mark? I mean only 5 films in history has ever done it. Can it get there?

This movie is exactly why you go to the movies. Visually spectacular. The way the characters emote through their CG counterpart is just outstanding. The characters are more believable in this expensive cartoon than in most live action films When neytiri reacts to the death of her son you can feel that grief and it was just as gut wrenching as shirley McClain in terms of endearment (my measure for death reactions in film). Loved every moment of avatar 2.

I pretty much bullied my mother to go see this movie the other night. She had no interest in seeing it and was anti the 3 hour plus runtime, but I knew if I just got her in the theatre she would love it. And I was right. Now she’s basically bullying me to go watch it again.

Like I do understand the "no pop culture impact" but one of my favorite jabs at that is "name one character from that movie!" And sure, most people can't, but ask most people to name a character from Inception, that came out around the same time as Avatar and they still can't.

Rob said it best for me. Seeing a Cameroon film is getting your money’s worth. Love it or hate it, it’s very hard to leave a Cameron film and argue, he didn’t throw the kitchen sink at me. It’s so thrilling to leave a cinema and feel like the filmmakers were desperate to entertain me. I respect that.

@@ahappyklingon3631 I admit I thought some of the plot devices were hokey that left a sour taste at the end. After my second viewing those gripes went away partly by seeing this as setting up the foundation for crazier things coming up. The chemistry between characters, between Lo’ak and Payakan, easy-to-follow action sequences with clear stakes, the emotional ending all were cinematic and why we go to movies. As Del Toro said this is a MOVIE-MOVIE

@@ahappyklingon3631 If we wish to examine the sources you speak of, they are generally in consensus that the film is also a visual masterpiece, and most believe the plot is an improvement on its predecessor, despite its contrivances and weaknesses (which I agree, it certainly has). I can say that there are moments in the film I narrowed my eyes and said “wait but that’s dumb”. I can also say most of the film was stunning, and I cried hearing Saldaña’s character wailing, as I have been witness to a similar moment in real life I feel the film perfectly represented. I can’t convince you to like this film, and I don’t want to. What I can do is encourage you to consider that others may have opinions and perspectives you may not, and that is okay.

I have seen this film five times in IMAX 3D and plan on going more. I had commented on a earlier video that I projected a 1.7 billion dollar mark for Avatar: The Way of Water. However, I did say that I wouldn't be surprised if it made 2billion. Well, I think it's just about guaranteed to make at least that. I have not seen a film that gives me the same "experience" nor have I seen a film get more standing ovations than Avatar and Avatar: The Way of Water.

It's sucha serious misunderstanding around the net that people think it needs 2 billion just to break even. It doesn't, Cameron was just exaggerating & he was expecting people to notice. Just goes to show majority don't know how hollywood works. Plus when he said it needed to be the 3rd or 4th highest grossing, he never mentioned domestic or international. Those are 2 very different numbers.

I know there are comparisons to Spiderman NWH’s run in theaters (which makes sense,) but that’s not really in the same ballpark, is it? Spiderman is an extremely popular character that’s been around for freaking decades. It’s no surprise that movie made as much money as it did. And with the “nostalgia bait,” it’s was a guaranteed success. Avatar isn’t attached to anything and has only been around for 13 years. Avatar only had 1 movie where Spiderman had 7ish movies and tons of TV shows to count. Avatar doing what Marvel movies are expected to do without having decades of a cultural impact is pretty impressive.

@John Love, you’re right. Avatar does fall under the Disney umbrella, but I just mean that it’s doing pretty well to now have a brand, you know? Marvel is under Disney, too, but it’s the brand “Marvel.” Or maybe I’m wrong. I don’t know. I don’t pay too close attention to these who owns who and what company technically gets the money when a product is released. I’m just saying if Disney didn’t own Marvel or Avatar (because they both started out “on their own” in their own rights,) it would be a different story. But I guess the ones who didn’t want this movie to succeed are softening the blow by saying they are both Disney. Not saying you are one of those people. I mean, no Marvel movie crossed the $1B mark in 2022, right? And allegedly, Disney lost billions in 2022. It’s not Marvel’s fault, of course, but if there were any brand that could have helped with the numbers, it would have been Marvel, so what happened?

One thing that I find amazing no one seems to bring up that Cameron did so well was transition the narrative away from Jake to his kids. They are the main protagonists, the main drivers of the narrative, the focus of the screen. There are 30-40 minute gaps where Jake is in the background or nowhere to be seen. And you can tell that come Avatar 3, he'll either be further out of the picture or will die, cementing this transition.

Funny to me as non American, how you guys always measure every success through the cultural impact and judging everything through the lens of comic book or SW movies. Firstly, Avatar doesn't contain any easy cape costume or fancy light saber, nor does it have an aliens with human faces. I'm a biggest Avatar fan in the world, but why would I ever put myself into a tight blue leotard costume? I'm a human not NaVi. Disgusting! Secondly, these films are emotional rides, dramas, people who love them enjoy them as serious movies. We don't need and we don't want to do memes, funny remarks, costumes.

@@jamesgarbett4331 My absolute favorite is 2D Digital 24fps. So happy Cinemark had it in non 3D in one of their biggest theaters opening day. Now my local Cinemark is only showing 2D 24fps on all the smaller auditoriums. 😢 Second would be Dolby 3D 24-48 and last is 3D IMAX. You just can’t beat the picture quality on Dolby. I just wish there was a 2D Dolby 24fps option. I’m not a big 3D guy but yes the 3D is amazing in it. Also I just prefer the cinematic look of 24fps.

@@jamesgarbett4331in my opinion IMAX 3D at cinemark was best. The picture quality in Dolby was amazing but the changing frame rates didn’t work for me. But IMAX 3D was 24fps the whole time, so that plus the bigger screen and 3D was the most immersive for me

It will make around 3.5 billion. Nearly everyone I talk to who has seen it has said they will go see it at least once more. You're right about the lack of a pop culture footprint. As much as people have liked these two movies so far, in these last thirteen years this universe hasn't embedded itself into our world the way Star Wars, or Star Trek, or Terminator have. Might that change as James finishes off the rest? Maybe. We'll have to wait and see.

@@zzzzzz69 I guess it depends on who you ask. If you want to talk purely by box office numbers, then Avatar has got them all beat. But then if we get into people's emotional attachment to it then it definitely hasn't reached the same levels that others have. They haven't had their "asta la vista, baby.", or their trench run down the Death Star that leaves people wanting to talk about it, over and over, for the rest of their lives. Honestly, the most talk this franchise has gotten in the last thirteen is whether there was going to ever really be a sequel to actually make this a FRANCHISE.

No surprise to me as I’ve said before. I will be very surprised if it doesn’t hit 2 billion plus.
