Let's be real, much worse players than current Harden get max contracts. He gives you 20 and 10 on a nightly basis. Khris Middleton at the peak of his career was giving you 20 and 6 and he had a 177 million dollar max contract. "Oh but Harden's old what if he declines" he's already gone through massive injury, we're already seeing how his game translates with declined physicality, he can still play just fine. You don't pay a man based on what he might be giving you in 3 years, you pay him because you want to retain his services. I don't know who it was in the Philadelphia organization that decided that Harden wasn't worth a max contract after Morry promised him one, but whoever made that decision is just as much to blame for this drama as Harden is. Philly is a team that should be out there chasing championships, making the most of Embiid's prime, you don't get stingy at times like that. Your second best player wants a max contract you give him one. It's that simple. Contrast how Philly, a supposedly large market, treats its players and their salaries, with how Milwaukee treats its players. Giannis loses in the first round twice in a fucking row, he gets a league high supermax and another allstar on his team with his own max contract the very next year, immediately wins a championship. No fuss, no drama, no bitching, take your money and go play some fucking basketball. Milwaukee is a very small market, arguably one of the smallest in the league, and when Giannis makes even the slightest peep they immediately go "yeah wex'll fix that". He loses in the first round again in 2023, says "well I might leave Milwaukee if we keep losing", they immediately trade for Damian Lillard who is 33 years old and on a freaking supermax. Milwaukee recognizes that paying a luxury tax will simply not matter if they get to host the NBA finals next year. It's that plain and simple. This type of drama would simply never happen with any other organization. You always give the second best player on your championship contending team a max contract, you just do, you don't fuss over that type of shit. Celtics give zero fucks, they gave the guy who can't go left a supermax. Why? Because winning a championship is worth it. Now, does Harden, as a PERSON, deserve that kind of money? Fuck no. But you don't pay people depending on how nice they are to work with, you pay them based on the production they give you on the court. The Philly front office is as unprofessional as Harden himself. Even if Harden didn't deserve the max contract, they should have still given it to him because Embiid's prime is worth a lot more to the team than a couple hundred mill. And now because they mishandled this situation he's probably going to leave. The 76ers are simply a bad organization to work for, just ask Allen Iverson.

Harden is not worth a max contract. With the 2nd apron on the new CBA, teams can't afford to have old, injury prone non-superstars taking up max money. It's not just luxury tax, you also lose your MLE signing, have a bunch of trade restrictions, and your 1st round picks (that you can't trade) get moved to the end of the first round regardless of your record if you were in the 2nd apron for 3 out of the last 5 years. The Celtics had to think long and hard about if they wanted to give JB a supermax after he made an all-NBA team and is entering his prime. You're not going to see aging guys on Harden's level get max contracts anymore. Dame got his contract because he is still capable of being a top-10 player. Harden is not in the same boat. On top of that, there's a ton of risk in giving him a max. Who's to say Harden doesn't decline to 16/8 next season and miss a bunch of time with his continued injury problems? If you don't win next year, how is that contract going to look after he keeps declining over time, Embiid still wants out, and you can't rebuild off your own picks? Even if he suddenly stops declining, his injury problems go away, and is the same player as last year, he still has a history of choking in the playoffs even when healthy. He's worth a fairly large contract, not a max though.

Harden ain’t that good & the rule changes proves this. His STATS dropped drastically & ISO can only last 6 seconds, before a shot or pass must be attempted. However, they allow him to put everyone asleep while dribbling in place for 30-35 seconds. He travels, carrying & makes self-passes (they allow him to keep his dribble) & no more fake foul calls, this alone shaved off 15 points
