I’d have to agree with you my younger self 45+ years ago did the very thing you describe because I was so in love & didn’t want to hear the truth that he never loved me like that & of course the marriage didn’t last & because of my blindness it cost be greater pain than had I let him sail on before having 2 children with him because he ultimately took revenge on me & alienating my children from me & he punished me for it because he never loved me like I loved him & today I wish I could go back & tell that younger me what I know today.

I absolutely LOVE this song. THIS song is laced with so many love lessons I wish I had learned as a younger woman. It was perfectly written with so many signs to look out for regarding a man's heart towards a woman he does not truly love. The hook line is golden. You think I'm kidding? Go back and listen to this song again, beyond the beauty of Mr. Ingram's passion and the music. It can save you from major disappointment. Here's my analysis: the song first starts out with the woman confessing her love for the man. NOPE. Don't do it. Ladies, NEVER tell a man you love him first. If he doesn't love you, the rejection could be brutal. Lesson #2 is found in the hook: "I don't have the heart to hurt you, it's the last thing I want to do." He likes the idea that you love him, but he doesn't feel the same and he doesn't want to hurt you. Maybe it's all fun for him. But baby, the last point is the dinger: " But I don't have the heart to love you-not the way you want me to." Translation: He doesn't love you, never planned on it, and never will. He's moving on. Final point-:Ladies, NEVER EVER offer your heart to a man who hasn't asked for it and only remain in the presence of a man who can love you the way you deserve to be loved. Period. If he doesn't have the heart for you, MOVE ON and help him do the same. This applies to men too! 😊 What a great song! ❤

I love this song too. I sang it for this girl I was with over a two years ago. I’ll say this though, in my experience it was me singing it to her because while I knew she wanted too much and was sweet to me as I was to her, she wasn’t the girl I should have stayed with. She had many problems and while I had a “love” for her, I wasn’t able to bring myself to love her the way she needed. It would have required me to live a relationship that was emotionally abusive and loaded with double standards. Unfortunately that was what I’d have been consenting to had I made it work. You’re right though , it does apply to both sexes and with different scenarios. She met me after work one Friday night at a bar that had karaoke that night and after much deliberation , I sang the song and after that, I walked out of the bar and didn’t look back.
