"His career was not affected by his time on the tonight show." How do people see him floundering on television and continue believing that he has psychic powers!? It was painfully obvious that he was a charlatan. It was as plain as the sun hanging in the sky. Sometimes I can't comprehend how stupid some people can actually be.

The same way people keep believing in religion. Because they want to. Of course, your question seemed to be on the rhetorical side, but it's really a deep question into the human mind. It reminds me of some things I could believe as a very young child.

+JustAGuy I know this is a long title, but go to Google and do a search for this phrase: *Cognition and Belief in Paranormal Phenomena: Gestalt/Feature-Intensive Processing Theory and Tendencies Toward ADHD, Depression, and Dissociation*

+Bob Cobb I don't think it's unreasonable to believe in religion. Come at me
@madistoimla7528 жыл бұрын
+JustAGuy It's not a deep question at all, us humans are known to do anything in their powers to escape reality. Drugs, alcohol, magic and religion all have the same property of making reality "different" or "more special". We hate reality, we hate the fact we can't control reality and we feel threatened by it. So we look for methods of escape, for me it's a joint in the evening for some others it's morning booze and for some it's the praying before going to sleep. For most it's the combination of these things, but it's clear as a day that the motives for all these actions are the same: we don't hhave control over reality and these things helps us cope with that, or deny it.
@lyingonthemoon7928 жыл бұрын
Madis Toimla That's a good answer, and it's a good way to use religion - but what about the people who don't use it for closure. In a hospital a few years ago, a friend of mine lost her father. She was already ruined at his passing, but what terrified her more was that he might go to hell. There's so many aspects of religion that might have a negative impact on a practitioners life, I've always had a more pick and choose mentality myself.

@Matt S Ah, the good old days < wipes tear from eye> of the Nokia Mobile phone - sigh. Yep, these clowns are very convincing when it is there environment, their props and they are in charge. When you take them out of that (as Johnny Carson and James Randi did) and watch them crumble to dust; now that is real entertainment. Its easy to fool those who want to be deceived - conmen use the principle of, 'make the victim want to give you his money.' When is works it works well. Unfortunately, some people can be fooled all of the time.

What gets me about Uri Geller's tricks is that they aren't even that amazing even if you took them at face value. If he, say, bent spoons with his mind from like 10 feet away without having any physical contact with them, that would be impressive. I might not believe he had psychic powers but I would scratch my head and at least wonder "how the heck did he do that?" As is, I see a man holding a spoon, clearly bending it WITH HIS HANDS, and he says "look! My psychic powers let me bend things with my mind!" At least when an honest magician does a trick, it looks cool. Geller's stuff just looks lame.
@saraha1808 жыл бұрын
+Thrifty032781 If you take Uri Geller's claims at face value, it would be one of the greatest discoveries in human history. That you can melt metal by conjuring heat with your mind and channeling it through your fingers? That you can see what someone's drawing without looking? That you can make a broken television start working again just by emphatically thinking "work!"? Whether or not they look as flashy as a magician's trick, these things would completely redefine our conception of the physical world.

at about 8:10 James Randi says he doesn't understand why people cling to the irrational. I think the answer is because people want to believe there is something more than the tangible world around them. They want to believe in magic and the supernatural because it's reasonable to then also believe evil is caused by demons, that there are angels to protect people from demons, and that there is indeed an afterlife. That, and super powers would be pretty awesome. Wishful thinking I guess.

It's amazing that they're totally honest that what they do is trickery, yet somehow they trick me every time anyway. The likes of Geller are far more insidious, attempting to prey on the fantasies of the gullible or the hard-off. If you want something to happen enough, it will? That's literally the worst kind of message you can spread.

Randi is (in fact) amazing. I have witnessed many things in my life for wich i don't have an exact explanation, but i know that (some) truth exists to that, whatever it is. The "supernatural" cannot exist! Simple as that. Because whatever the answer to a mistery is, once we know it, it becomes part of the natural (even if it involves obscure reasons that we don't yet master). Now, the only thing i disagree with Randi is in that certain substances (he calls them all "narcotics", but a narcotic is something that makes you fall asleep, and not all drugs do that) will take awareness away from us. Not always! Many substances can upgrade one's awareness and even open doors otherwise closed. "Reality" is overated, one can easily be fooled by our own senses, without any drugs involved. Some drugs, in fact, make it easier to spot some hidden aspects of reality. So, of course, he stands wrong to thing that using substances will always take away awereness.

The thing that keeps me skeptical about Psychic powers is that there is no way for your brain to "touch" objects. You can move your body with your mind because it is attached. How could we move things with our mind without touch? What makes us so special that we can influence objects with thoughts? We're just another animal, smarter but still another animal. Once you remove the illusion that humans are something magically greater than other beings, you realize it makes little sense.
@maxlarsen9 жыл бұрын
Ok some qestions have you ever felt heat or air? i bet you have if you have, have you ever feelt it from a human body without touching him/her? i bet you have, that is a form of energy created from the body not from the brain, but remeber the brain controlls the body and there is more forms of energy in a living creature then just heat. Have you ever been alone walking on the streets at night suddenly you feel behind you that someone is watching you ?, you dont smell him you dont see him you dont hear him he is 300 feet away from you, but still you do feel that someone is there, that is also one UNEXPLAINED energy that "Scientist" havent prooved yet, well if you have felt that, then you now also know that the "scientists" doesnt know "everything" about the world and i can ensure you they dont, humans always belived that they know "everything about the world" still they explore new things everyday.
@vroomer079 жыл бұрын
max larsen You can feel the body heat of another person without touching them because of convection and thermal radiation. www.britannica.com/EBchecked/topic/591461/thermal-radiation There are studies about that "feeling" you get when people are watching you and one possible explanation is that our instincts assume that we're being watched as a defensive/survival tactic. That feeling tends to happen more when you are feeling vulnerable or exposed. Claiming that it's caused by some "UNEXPLAINED" energy is completely unfounded. There are many times when I feel like someone is watching me and no one is around and I think most people have similar experiences, they just tend to remember the times when they were correct. www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-2308318/Think-someones-staring-Youre-paranoid--hard-wired-brains.html

It doesn't surprise me that people tend to favor irrational explanations. In my experience, people like to see the world in black and white, and they also like fast answers to all questions they may have. So if, for example, science can't provide instant rational answers to everything they'd like to know, they simply go with the irrational ones that religions claim to possess. Black and white. Good or bad. You can't tell me what I need to know, so I'll just go with the other option, no matter WHAT it is. It makes me feel good. God, people are stupid.

Simply putting it in "competitive" terms so it has a small chance of resonating with you Randi fans: In a belief-based existence where there are NO LIMITS (which is ACTUALLY the case).. those who BELIEVE most.. "WIN" (so to speak) and end up with the most abilities and creative power - since the ONLY REAL LIMITS are inside one's head. James Randi is pushing a sad agenda of SKEPTICISM & HUMAN LIMITATION.. and thus diminishing and minimizing the practical potential of all those who believe him. Anyone can have miraculous abilities.. but YOU MUST have enough open-mindedness to INTEND for such skills to develop. - I have 1 or 2 at this point, but there are others with so many i feel silly directing any attention my way.. until I can become MORE of an example. That IS coming - but I have been "awake" only 10 months.. so I am a baby compared to many others awakened 5-15 years ago. There are hundreds, if not thousands of people, simply on KZbin.. doing IMPOSSIBLE things - but doubters are SO BRAINWASHED into believing how limited they are, they simply cannot SEE or ADMIT what is RIGHT BEFORE THEIR EYES.

I hate him because he is the reason no new Kadabra cards are being made, now I have several Kadabra shaped holes in my collection.

I agree with Randi. I admire Carl Sagan and recomend you to read Demon Haunted World. But when Geller came to México, my sister and I took spoons in our hands while Uri was on TV. Suddenly the one that she had started to bend! We were so young and that scared us to death. I saw that, I swear, and I can’t explain it until today.

"I want to be... if I can, as sure of the world, the real world around me, as is possible. Now you can only attain that to a certain degree, but I want the greatest degree of control. I don't, I've never involved myself in narcotics of any kind, I don't smoke, I don't drink because... that can easily just fuzz the edges of my rationality, fuzz the edges of my reasoning powers, and I want to be as aware as I possibly can. That means giving up a lot of fantasies that might be comforting in some ways, but I'm willing to give that up in order to live in an actually real world, as close as I can get to it." Pot heads, alcoholics, and other drug addicts absolutely blown the fuck out. Respect to James.

When did the uploader say that this video was theirs? It very clearly states at the beginning that this is an exert from Nova program televised on PBS.

6:57 Uri knocks the table, he can see which tiny cylinders move easily and which don't. Randi got the shows producers to glue the bottoms of the cylinders and let the glue dry before popping them on the table, this stops the cylinders easily sliding around or wobbling. Hence the trick was ruined.

I especially love how he fidgets with the spoon for like a whole minute before actually bending it. There's a friend of mine who is 2 meters tall and once bent a fork with his fingers in like 10 seconds.

If I remember right, Randi told the producers to put some rubber cement on the bottom of those little containers to throw Geller off when he was on the Tonight Show. Looks like it worked.

I love the Johnny Carson segment. Had he and going there on the table. Uri could have chosen to do one of those as a trick. He had done that trick repeatedly on other talkshows. WHY would Uri shy away from spoon bending on this day?

Skepticism definition: DOUBT. Synonyms: agnosticism, apprehension, disbelief, distrust, dubiety, dubiousness, faithlessness, hesitation, indecision, lack of confidence, leeriness, questioning, reluctance, suspicion, uncertainty. You can have your own opinion, not your own not your own facts...

Uri Geller did not claim he was performing magic tricks, he claimed he had a super natural gift, actual real magic powers. He claimed to be a an actual real Pyschic. James Randi is not saying he has no imagination, he said nothing like that. He was simply saying he wants to be aware of the real world as possible, you don't need to believe in the paranormal or take drugs to have an imagination. He was a magician for years that takes a huge amount of imagination.

Yes you are right, indeed. I will repeat what I wrote to someone before: Person who is skeptical, but not open-minded = cynical Person who is open-minded, but not skeptical = gullible Person who is skeptical and open-minded = rational
@mehyouwantsometlove40037 жыл бұрын
This guy deserves more credit than hes getting. We need more people like him debunking all these ridiculous fantasies that cloud up peoples judgement. Think, if people go to a magic show and see something that makes them believe something that it irrational, then whats to say that same way of thinking wouldnt get in the mix of everyday life and rational thought?...Its things like this that a long time ago started a fantasy revolution that is still very strong today. But I honestly think that no matter how many fantasies get debunked, people will still believe b/c its somehow comforting to them.

For anyone interested: under this video, you see half a conversation between me and a self-proclaimed psychic. She decided to erase her comments, after trying to "read" me, and indicating that she had now powers at all. Funny enough, she started by saying she would LOVE to take randi's test. Very good example of how people can actually convince themselves of something, despite every evidence to the contrary. And very fitting under this video.

No. Because other radioes have FM. What was your point anyway? He failed to show his powers, thus we can conclude he has no powers until he proves that he does.
