Hey thanks James!! This song came to me tonight in somewhat of a melancholy mood🎶 and I wanted to play along with the intro.. I've never learned the intro quite right and came upon your video..thanks for showing that cool intro! with the Pete Townshend Chord..👍 I always thought they played this intro with a 12-string? I got the opportunity to see America live about 4 years ago south of here at Paradise casino in North Dakota. It was really something 👍
@jay.watchman99862 жыл бұрын
Love this tune! It's so calm and enigmatic with those luscious chords. America and CSN probably wrote the greatest acoustic tracks overall. But I always play a C7 barre chord after the Gmaj7.

Gotta love those maj7 chords - getting three fingers into position is fine but that fourth finger takes some coaching. Thanks for this one!

Good stuff as always bro. Been working my way through America. Got A Horse with No Name, Sister Golden Hair, and Ventura Highway down. Approached this one hesitantly. Dewey and his damn two-chord songs. But well-explained. Gratis.

Got it. 5 chords. I like your switch. It sounds good and if it's comfortable for you then by all means jam it. It gives it more colour : ) I have a 12 string Crestwood and I've always started with an A minor on the 5th fret back to the third fret. And so on. I love the intro to this song! So simple! I can't believe it's taken me this long and your help to get it. It doesn't sound too shabby when it's played on any 12 string the way I do. It beats the C and G way any day. Thanks JJ ; )

Thanks so much for the lesson. I’m going to practice, but I may need some of those Flutie Flakes to get this one right.

Beyond the chord voicings, the money on this tune is the bass line. Reminds me of the bass part for Devil Woman by Cliff Richard. The song wouldn't be half as cool without it.

Great stuff... If you were to play the Cmaj7 on the third fret, you may find that voicing goes along better with the vocal melody.

Well crap, I've been playing that 2nd chord wrong. Never realized that other chord was a varient of the Cmajor 7, which sounds great with the open A string.....

I was thinking there was a cmaj7 in there somewhere...but maybe Ive been playing it wrong...

Thanks. Didn’t you have an old video that taught this one? I thought those chords sounded good - couple of different ones here, also good - curious how you came about changing them up.

Different voicings on the recording, so I figured I’d try a few different ways to play it.

@@dr.hookyeah2883 Archie Bell and the Drells from Houston Texas ! I still play that song, It's such an easy song to play and sounds awesome (1e, 2b, 3g, 4d slide dwn to 6e, 7b, 8g, 9d) I even do the solo for the horn parts (9e, 6e, 7b, 5e, 4e, 7b, 4b, 6g & slide ring finger to 3g lay the other fingers down and keep going)

I always played all of the chords in the open position with the 7ths. I'm not sure if anyone on the record does.
@jamesjames92752 жыл бұрын
There are at least two guitars on the recording, maybe three. So you may be onto something.

Great lesson How come you don’t have any Taylor guitars in your inventory? A lot of people like them and they seem to be pushing them at the retail level Keep on truckin

I had a Taylor 450 about 20 years ago, it was outstanding. But there are a lot of guitars I don't own.

@@jamesjames9275 To me they seem too bright and don't provide the fullness of Gibson and Martin, which seem to be your go to guys. Thanks for your reply.
@jamesjames92752 жыл бұрын
@@LaurenceWindy The 415 I had (I don't know if they make those any more) was a jumbo, with the back and sides made of some kind of African wood. It had tons of bass to it, almost too much. I really liked it, but in those days, I didn't keep guitars for very long before moving on to something else.
