As an Iranian-American with Kurdish ancestry I really hope my brothers and sisters don't get screwed or abandoned by the US again. They been literally fighting for thousands of years for independence from various empires and countries and deserve some stability and statehood.

Good day, they are likely to be used and discarded again. Much of the effort in regime change is linked to pro-Turkish and pro-Arab groups. From the track record of the West, the Turks and the Arabs are likely to have precedent before the Kurds.

Again ... Americans don't control the world just because they were the largest superpower for a couple decades. In this situation, I don't see that the Syrian Kurds are in a great position to get everything they want. If any power has the upper hand in Syria right now, it is the HTS and their Turkish backers. SInce Erdogan is in charge in Ankara, I don't think you should get your hopes up too much for Kurdistan. He's very opposed to the Kurdish cause.

At 58:50, he totally forgot to mention that Egypt offered Peace in 1971 on condition that Israel adhere to International Laws and UN resolution that requires end the illegal settlements and occupation. Israel rejected that, US vetoed UNSC and only through War, Suez Canal was returned and later Sinai clean of illegal settlements. Moral of Story: Western Colonialists do not accept Peace deals without wars.

It seems to me, going forward, Syria badly needs the US and Turkey to cooperate in keeping everyone else at bay. Do you think Trump's people will find a way to justify a longer term engagement?

Thank you again prof. James to highlight the complex political scene in a complex geographic region. About Kurds and Turks political knot. If turkish state continue refusing to solve all oppression against Kurdish people inside it's borders, by new modern path in constitution and laws (pacifically, which I hope but I don't see it), this high tension by military wars and killing and crimes against Kurdish people outside of borders (even inside), never go to bring peace for turkey. And any militaty success means nothing when you don't have a political solution to resolve it.

As a Turk, the Kurdish issue is a deeply sensitive and complex topic. I feel super frustrated when claims about 'occupied land' arise, especially given the historical context that a Kurdish state has never existed in Asia Minor. The trauma of PKK violence, which has left countless Turkish civilians as victims, is a painful reality for many. This is a defensive stance of its sovereignty and security. The lack of understanding or acknowledgment from Europe regarding Turkey's perspective often exacerbates tensions. I'm not convinced Europe has a balanced perspective - it certainly can't foster mutual respect.

My issue with "they didn't have a country before, so they can't have it now" is that it's a vicious circle: to get a country, you should already have it, historically speaking. By this logic, no country is legitimate. Shouldn't new countries emerge out of current circumstances? Otherwise, we'll have to return half of Africa to Europe, etc.
@AlexKasap_Melb
@AlexKasap_Melb 13 күн бұрын
@@shryggur You make a valid point. However, the Kurds have long claimed that Turkey is occupying their land, and some have taken up arms against a NATO country to assert control over territory that historically was not a Kurdish nation. Europe often overlooks Turkey's perspective. If the Kurds were granted land, their idea of gaining access to Turkish borders would gain traction. This is something that cannot happen, and I believe it never will.

I can't trust their good intentions, why? 40 minutes of the 70-minute video about Syria was about the problems of the Kurds, which are 10% of Syria. How can the Sunni majority, who have been under minority rule for 50 years, include themselves in the administration? They didn't say a single word or talk about their problems.

Two English guys talking about Syria would naturally gravitate to the Kurds. The Kurds will be okay, there are discussions with the transitional government about integrating them into the rest of Syria. One of the sticky points is the government wants the PPK gone from the area. They do not seem to have a problem with the Kurds' wish for autonomy.
@shryggur
@shryggur 13 күн бұрын
Maybe it's because the Kurds are one of the major powers in the conflict? There's also a lot of talk about foreign players, for that matter. Unfortunately, to be realistic, you have to talk about the ones who will make decisions, not the ones who will have to live with them.
@JamesKerLindsay

We focused on it because it is the most obvious question when one discusses the continued existence of Syria within its established borders and because it is a question that Turkey is obsessed about - even if it doesn't like people talking about it.
