Hürzeler actually often said that even though they have clear tactics, especially against the ball and in build-up play, he doesn’t restrict his players when it comes to attacking and scoring goals. He wants his players to take responsibility and use their own thoughts and ideas rather than being obligated to play in a certain way which makes it really hard for the opposition to prepare for a game against a Hürzeler side.
@mogliii6029
@mogliii6029 Ай бұрын
Not quite correct, but you got the basic idea right. He gives his players certain moving patterns that they can use, but how and when they use each pattern is pretty much random/chosen by the player in the game

I guess the core concept is pretty simple. Make sure that you are where they are not within the final third. I also love the idea of bullying the opponent's 6, which is the most important defensive player in modern football. His job is to be wherever the game is, and you instruct your players to be wherever he is not which leaves him with nothing to do.

Some useful points- The Hürz in Hürzeler is pronounced like Hertz, not like Hearse. The ried of Pipinsried is pronounced read, not ride. Irvine is primarily regarded as an 8. Hartel is an 8/10 and has been one of the top scorers of the 2. BL for many years, long before Hürzeler arrived. Pauli were great last season so his numbers are up but that is true for the whole team. I came second in kicker (German fantasy football) last season and Hartel was more or less the first name in my squad. Switching between a back 3 and back 4 when winning the ball is quite common in Germany and achieved in several different ways. The 2-3-4-1/3-2-4-1 formation that Pauli often use for their attacks is incredibly popular in Germany, having been played by the national team in some form for the entire Löw era. The space on the right flank vs Osnabrück was created because the VfL were chasing the game and therefore the LW had not tracked back properly. If wanting a clip to highlight Pauli overloads, I would suggest the second (Hartel) goal against Hertha on Match Day 25. Not only are Hertha a much better side but you can get frames just before the goal of 6 Pauli players within a 20 x 10 box on the right, which created the space on the edge of the box you are describing here.

"Hartel is an 8/10 and has been one of the top scorers of the 2. BL for many years, long before Hürzeler arrived. " Welll. Not Quite. Hartel sure always had pretty strong Assist Rates but under Hürzeler his scoring abilities just exploded. first of all, before coming to St. Pauli he usually made 5-8 Scorerpoints over 34-37 Matches in a year. the only time he achieved more than ten scorers was with Arminia Bielefeld in 2019/20 he scored one Goal and got 13 Assists which was good but expectable to his skill-level and position (and especially Bielefelds Scoring-Rate in that year. Otherwise Hartels Scoring was pretty mediocre. 4 goals and 6 Assists in 60 matches (evenly split over both seasons) then his time in bielefeld where he racked up 14 in 55 Matches and at St. Pauli under Schultz his scoring was stayed good but not "best" worthy in his first season he scored two goals and gave 8 ( 6 in the league 2 in the cup) and in the first half of the second season he managed 3 Goals and 4 Assists. So for St. Pauli under Schultz he had 5 Goals and and 12 Assists (17) in 53 Matches which is good but no Top-Scorer Level for 2. Bundesliga. Before this season his best Placement in the 2. Bundesliga Scorer-List was 25th with Bielefeld in 2019/20 Especially comparing this to Hartels Scoring Explosion in this Season where he managed to score 21 Goals and rack up 15 Assists (making it the first time ever to score more often than assisting) making it 36 Scorers in 37 Matches. to be fair and set it to a total perspective taking the second half of the Season before into the equation he got a total of 41 Scorer Points in 54 Matches meaning Hartels Numbers did not just get up but they more than doubled and especially his Goal Scoring was majorly impacted by Hürzelers Playstyle. Before this season it basically was a running gag among St. Pauli (and other teams he played for) Players to joke about him having anything a great Footballer needs except for good scoring rates usually being more associated with strong passes and fine dribblings. So it's definitely not like he always was a strong scorer who got slightly better. he went from "pretty good" to "basically unstoppable" and a lot of this was based on the way Hürzeler used Hartel in his System.

It's totally normal in Germany for coaches tp spend years in lower leagues because of how the coaching license system works. After getting the B+ license, you'll need at least 3 years of experiece as a head coach in lower leagues, head coach of a youth teams in higher leagues or as an assistant manager in the higher leagues before you can apply for the A license. Just look at other german coaches like Tuchel and Klopp. They all spend years as a youth coach or head coach in lower leagues before getting their first job in pro football.

Found your analysis very interesting. One of the things that I like about his system is its creative self adjustment. When the other team starts to figure you out then it's in built that your system adapts! I wonder how it will go against a low block and explosive counter attack? I have a feeling that it's going to be an exciting season to be Brighton fan!

Hürzeler actually awnsered this with St. Pauli before. It wasn't always successful but usually there have been clear visible strategies. First of all was consequent luring. so basically in a 0:0 Situation against any low block and rush Teams. Step one always was an extreme form of inviting the opponent to come up and play by playing sheer endless passes between Goalkeeper and last row that sometimes where played in a manner that looked super risky and involved passes that even make you as a watching fan super uncomfortbable because you just instantly hear the Coach that shouted at you as a kid for these kinda back passes (through the center - no look towards Goalkeeper standing in front of and not beside the goal etc.) so basically forcing the the oppenents attackers to attack and press at some point instantly creating room and overplay in some areas. If this didn't work step two was Patience. If this did not have any effects because the other team basically did not leave there own box/defending third everything for the own half build up got either scrapped or just compressed into the opponents half but with a pretty strong sense for saftey. meaning usualls a triangle of centerbacks arround the middle sircle that basically dealt as distributional base behind th shown attacking pattern of two lines 4 and 3 with lots of freedom of movement actually completely overtaking each other (for example forward pass -> leading to all two of the forwards/attackers to move towards this pass while those equivalents switch in front of them to then recieve the ball giving again space for the attacking row to overtake again. the key point to success with this playstyle was the "Saftey- Standards" no matter how defensive/passive the opponent behaved if the situation in the last third got just a little bit unclear the direct response was "turn arround - look for center the backs pass to them they will redistribute the ball into an area that has more control sometimes even play it back to the keeper coming out to then completely re-align and regain control and if lost posession usually one try to instantly regain posesseion and/or just block the ball from being played long by the nearest players while everyone else switched in to defending mode building up some flat 5-4-1 ish positioning. so basically this kind of play was matched by a team that not just likes to play dynamcally but that loves to have the ball and that starts to just dominate. Over the whole last season only two teams have been rather successful with this kind of tactics Hannover in the first round of the season managed to keep a 0:0 by basically sacrificing every chance of scoring themselves and Elversberg managed to get a 3:4 away win with this sort of kick and rush and the help of basically the whole team having a bad day. Usually the best way to stress Hürzelers System was by creating total chaos using dangerously aggressive first row pressing or just throw things in go high own risks and just make sure nobody has actual smooth posession at any point of the match (which usually is an intense playstyle uns could often not be hold up over the whole playtime).

A short remark on the Bayernliga Süd (Bavaria league south). It is one of the many fifth tier leagues. and due to the huge area the state of Bavaria has (and therefore the numbers of clubs), the 5 tier is split up in two regional leagues - north and south, basically as the Conference League in England with a more regional approach. Sure, in Bavaria it is the 2nd tier, but as a German football nerd myself, i wanted to give a little more background information on that one.

The offense is akin to how Basketball players are learned to run their offense. In basketball you run sets which focuses on creating an opportunity in a different area than where the ball is actually being held essentially cause and effect offense. Because football has become so strict on structural forms, like basketball it's easy to break down where help will come from or how the defense will react to something and then knowing how to get the ball there and the personel to excute said ideal.

@nunoalmeida2749
@nunoalmeida2749 Ай бұрын
@@juste5327 yeah but I still think players get pulled out of position because they are too desperate to win the ball. I noticed it last season in the Newcastle game against city, they were winning and their centre backs kept on trying to press the roaming 8s and got pulled out of position. When a team is winning if they avoid interaction with the other team and just make a wall in front of the goal it's way easier to deffend, but sometimes it looks like pride gets in the way of it.

Yet all you've really done is overanalyze specific game scenarios to make it seem like your abstractions make sense. Fabian subscribes to game philosophies that were clearly defined long before he used them. I'm not trying to undermine your work you probably have a vast knowledge of football. James pretending he'd heard of Hurzeler before he was appointed by Brighton. Comical. Definitely never saw a single game he's managed.

the key positions were: goalkeeper (needs to be very good with his feet, which verbruggen is) libero wingbacks and arguably a false 9

I think you should make less rethorical questions and talk about "next I'm going to tell you" and delay the point as it's a bit boring. And leave the "this is very interesting" to the viewers to determin how interesting it is. Make it look interesting rather than tell us it's interesting. I know KZbin wants creaters to make longer videos but next time if you don't fill the length optimally we'll just skip your content

The premier league is tougher for this kind of tactis. We have the likes of Mancity, Liverpool, Chelsea, Arsenal, Man Utd and all who has fast wingers that will exploit those space. 😂😂

I think if Brighton play like this they’ll get shredded on the counter and be in a relegation scrap. I think this tactic might work where you have the superior players, but against well coached prem teams with pace and power, I think in transition you’re asking a lot of the back 3 to be left so exposed

phew, not a very good nor deep analysis. why weren't you talking more about the build up which, depending on the situation, involves inverted fullbacks? the FB are essential on whether they are playing a 2-4 or 2-3 at the back! why so little talk about eric smith, who hürzeler formed into a libero (similar to stones at mancity)? yes, you mentioned the centre back moving forward but never have you mentioned smith who was absolutely incremental. same goes for mets and wahl with their VERY good passing. that build up is nothing special really as it has been used by none other than de zerbi himself, which is hürzelers biggest idol (or at least the one he mentions the most). why were you not talking about vasilj who was also incremental to the entire build up play? he wasn't really good with the ball before the goalie coach took over and made him into a really fine footballer. the same coach he now took with him to brighton btw. his tactics are the absolute opposite of weird: they are VERY basic and that is a good thing: his philosophy is defence first, short passes until last third and the players have the absolute most freedom you can possibly see. he only wants them to use principles. why pauli were also SO good and succesful was our solid defence. you should check out this article and translate it: millernton.de/2023/09/06/der-huerzeler-fussball-fc-st-pauli/
