Hey James or Mike, how about you guys play "Masters of Darkness" on the Sega Master System. Its Sega's answer to Castlevania. It came out on the Game Gear also. I'd like to hear what you guys gotta say while playing it.

Kaiser Jose I also wanted them to play that game, but I've seen their collection list on their site and it seems that they don't have the game yet. At least, the Master System version. Seeing as both of them like Castlevania, they definitely should get their hands on that game.

Beating a boss and dying at the same time, the worst feeling ever
@HunterX57

It's worse in certain megaman games where you don't become invulnerable after killing the boss, but the game still freezes your inputs as soon as it dies forcing you to stand in the way of an oncoming attack and die to it.

esmooth919 As long as you aren't down a round, that usually leads to a sudden death round, or another chance. At least in your standard versus/arcade modes. It sucks to high heaven in survival mode runs though.

esmooth919 worst than that was when in the slow motion ending hit both are apparently KO but then your opponent had like zero energy left but stands up again.

I love so much that the microphone pics up the desperate clenching and straining of the controller as they play through the stressful parts - Brings back that feeling of playing through a difficult game on the SNES with your childhood friends, and the stress and intensity when you made it far. It's a feeling modern games; full of autosaves, beginner gameplay mechanics, and unlimited internet walkthroughs, rarely reproduce.

That’s why I and so many other people love dark souls (and other from soft games like Sekiro and Bloodborne) because they actually capture those elements and that vibe, but with enough modern elements to be something new.

A true classic, a gem of the snes era. I remember getting this game for Christmas back in 1991. I consider this game to be a masterpiece in many more ways than one to a point where I and many others consider it legendary. One of the best games ever made, for sure. It blew my socks off -- fond memories and good times

Part one to me is the best, but only because it has heavy Nostalgia with it. I was around 5 and my father came home late from work, I was playing Super Mario Bros as it was the only game I had. He came into the room and surprised me and my brothers with 3 games, second hand of course, we weren't the richest family growing up. Along the games were ExciteBike, Thundercade, and Castlevania. I went ape shit like any 5 year old would and popped that sucker in and played for hours. I never got passed the 3rd stage until recently when I finally beat that game. I was never a fan of the RPG style castlevanias, CV4 is a damn good game and I enjoyed that one too. I'm still trying to get ahold of all the castlevanias I missed out on the N64 titles and SEGA titles.

I'm gonna start calling you two the Cardiac Kids, because you find ways to make boss battles very close-- and very exciting to watch as a viewer. That final 1-2 combo of Death and Dracula will test the patience of a lot of players; I remember many attempts, staying up late at night, trying to take both down... until I figured out movement and attack patterns and learned to counterattack. I still struggle a bit with both bosses to this day, but years (and years) of experience do serve me well when I play through the game every year. I finish in one sitting, usually using a handful of continues along the way. Like James, I consider Super Castlevania IV to be the best of the series. Symphony of the Night is a close second. I spent TONS of time playing Super Castlevania IV just after release; I also taped the soundtrack to listen to in my car, thanks to having my SNES sound output through my stereo. There's just something about the direct approach that this game is, rather than the combination of genres that Symphony of the Night is. It's pure action, with little item management or character-building to interfere; not that either or both of these things is bad, but the lack of them here makes the game more pure, in my eyes. I'd love to see you take either of the PlayStation 2 Castlevanias for a spin, if only to see and hear what your responses might be. They are definitely flawed games, but I personally think both get a bit too much hate from the community at large. Looking forward to next week, guys; thanks for keeping these video coming. I really enjoy them.

For people that say the E.T. episode was exactly the same as the end of the movie, they didn't show the game footage, as they couldn't get the rights to use the E.T. name or likeness, so it was something similar to the game footage, but not what's shown in the episode, as the name and footage was changed to avoid copyright and getting sued from Universal and Spielberg. So no, it's not exactly the same as the review in the movie. So now, that portion has the name and footage from the game so it's now an Episode. Even James says the E.T. episode is an official AVGN Episode on his website. Also there will be a new Halloween Episode soon, so shut the fuck up people. You people just like to complain about absolutely nothing. It's just really sad.

The 4 castlevania reviews of the nerd are my favorite episodes. I watched them at least 15 times. They are so good because it is the nerd but playing games he actualy likes and enjoyes for the most part. I hope some day there are more episodes like this, actual nerd episodes where the nerd gives himselve a break and plays some good games. I think that could bread new life in the nerd and will let him evolve as a charecter. It's time for something like this. Anyway great episode!

I may be a complete nut for this, but I always find the rattling and creaking of old school controllers a part of the nostalgic experience when playing retro games. I've always thought it would be a cool feature for re-releases of retro games or emulators to have an option to dub in the rattling and creaking sounds of the buttons when you press them to emulate the sound of the old controllers. Sorta like how some bands add vinyl crackle to their tracks nowadays because people miss the distinct sound I guess :P

Thanksgiving in Dracula's castle sounds like it'd be some shitty cartoon holiday special, that's kinda like the Grinch, where all the townsfolk are getting ready for thanksgiving, and talking about what they're thankful for, but Dracula is being a dick hole and is all like 'myah', but then in the end, he realizes the error of his ways, and invites everyone to eat thanksgiving dinner in his castle. Oh, then kills 'em all in a horrendously savage blood-orgy of destruction, the likes of which have never been seen, gorging himself into chaos.

Between playing this and Symphony of the Night I think I like this game better. While I don't have anything wrong with symphony of the night, it isn't so much skill based to win. In fact, there's a weapon in the game where if you obtain it the game becomes ridiculously easy. Besides, Super Castlevania felt more satisfying to beat

Brett R but the Crissaegrim was such a bitch to get. I mean i must have killed like 200 of those ghosts to get it to drop. As far as a cheap easy-mode item goes, they really made you grind for it. Still i have to say the Aria of Sorrow and Dawn of Sorrow are the best Castlevania games. Fun level design and bosses. Also the alternate play mode of dawn of sorrow was awesome and one of the hardest fights i have had on a handheld was that version of dracula (the alternate story version that is). The games had nice weapon variety and so many specials to equip. It probably comes from not playing in the NES/SNES era that I find only a whip as a weapon and a few subweapons rather uninspired and thus dull.

I got the NES Action Set in 1989 at the age of 7. Maybe 2 days later, my uncle and aunt got my California Games. Maybe a month later, my mom got me Super Mario Bros. 3. Those 3 games were so awesome. Honestly, I only picked out 4 NES games myself out of the 18 I had from 1989-1992, Mega Man 2, Zelda I, Adventure Island II, and Bart Vs The Space Mutants. My mother picked out every other NES game for me and they were all awesome games. She really knew how to pick good games like: City Connection, Snake Rattle 'N Roll, Rad Racer II, Super Mario Bros. 2, Wrecking Crew, Rescue Rangers, Adventures in the Magic Kingdom, etc. Real classics.

Got this game for my 21st birthday a few months ago. My dad was gracious enough to buy it for me when we were at our local game store. Still one of the best games I have for the system. I got really good at it playing it on an emulator and I finally managed to beat it once I got it on the cartridge. It really helps when you're playing with an actual controller as opposed to a keyboard, as you can more easily activate the special weapons. The controls also seem more fluent on the SNES as well. It has great replay value as well, especially with the hard mode added at the end of the game. I'll keep playing this one until I stop breathing.

Lords of Shadow is not that bad. I really enjoy the old-school titles and SOTN-like games but Lords of Shadow was pretty enjoyable too. It was a long game with many different techniques for your whip and some enjoyable boss fights. It's not amazing by any means, but it was a cool little reboot to a franchise that was getting stale with the constant repeat of SOTN-like games.

Thirteen CarreyOne AoS was arguably better than SotN aside from the cryptic soul equips at the end so I gues DoS was better in that regard. I actually liked Castlevania 3 more than 4 because of the challenge although 4 is objectively a better game.

*PROTIP #1:* On downward staircase blocks (like those on Stages 7, 8 and B), you don't need to walk down the staircases. (Save for the last one.) You can simply jump down to the lower platforms. *PROTIP #2:* Attacking bosses in a suicidal manner will (usually) always result in failure.

@@OcelotDAD , yes. SOTN becomes easier when using the Crissaegrim or Soul Steal or Shield Rod + Iron Shield. If I would play SOTN again, I would avoid the overpowered moves and try the different weapons and techniques instead.

If it hasn't been said regarding your Ghostbuster's comment: Indeed, a good version of Ghostbusters exists, and its on the C64. Its what the NES port was supposed to be but somehow they ruined it in translation. The C64 version on the surface looks a lot like the NES version, but has more features, less broken bullshit like the stairway at the end, and actually plays like a real game.

I really don't understand why people here are hating on Symphony of the night. It quite literally is just as great as Super Castlevania 4 if anything. It literally is the next best thing that came out after 4. Even the art style is somewhat similar. I mean they even took slogra and gaibon sprites from 4. 4 took the standards of how the game should be and sotn expanded on it. I respect and love both

You CAN drop to the right on stage 8, and that's what I always do. Sure, you'll get hit, but it's better than spikes. :P You can also just move straight across most of those disappearing blocks. Stand directly below the Zapf Bat when you hit him. Then the gold splashes on either side of you. The most "forgiving" part of this game compared to old Castlevanias is you get a password save before each of the four final bosses. And if you know about the secret power ups before Dracula, it's almost too easy.

I'm a Castlevania die hard and I hafta say, how is it the best when you can't even fall in a pit and die? WHY am I making such a weird complaint? Because it's what makes a game challenging and even though I mastered this one their playing (also my fav Castlevania. I was blown away by this a child), sotn never made me feel intimidated like this one did, except maybe Beezelbub and Galamoth, but even then I knew it was just a matter of figuring out the strategy. Never was their a moment in that one where my heart jumped into my throat like this one did, especially with the instant-kill spikes (hate those things). As far as coming close to being terrified like watching a good horror movie, this one delivers because of it's surprise deaths! Plus no sword could ever make up for the fun factor of using the whip. Sorry if I seem rude (I still really like Symphony) I just don't see eye to eye with a lot of fans about this.

Laviticus It's a matter of preference. Fans of the classic Castlevanias always say that they're better because they're more challenging, but not everyone plays video games primarily for the challenge.
@EvilForgemaster
@EvilForgemaster 9 жыл бұрын
Laviticus Why should there be a pit that kills you when you are an agile vampire who can transform into a bat and fly? Also, you are pretty wrong here. There were enough moments where you felt kinda intimidated. There were countless times where I has with really low HP and I was searching like crazy a save point or potion to be able to continue. Do you remember the spiked room? Do you remember the Doppelganger fight? The Guardians near the central clock in the reversed castle? And now that I said reversed castle... this alone was a whole new game. Even though Super Castlevania 4 was more difficult, it doesnt have much of a replay value. SoTN does. The procedure of searching to find everything in this game, to unlock all powers, find all rooms and secrets and all sort of weird combos between weapons, is what makes this game a masterpiece. Castlevania in the past used to be ALL about difficulty. The ones after SoTN added more elements without removing the difficullty factor entirely.
