I recently bought a 7 wood and absolutely love it. I hit it between 190-205 and a high draw. I struggle with long irons and I tend to hook hybrids into the next time zone. I never would have considered a 9 wood before, but after falling in love with my 7 wood, I'm looking for a used 9 wood right now. Hoping to hit it between 170-185 and drop it off of the moon.

For many Recreational Golfers, the 9 Wood makes perfect sense and would probably get better results than using their 3-4 Irons. Personally, I have taken my 3, 4, 5 & 6 Irons and my 3 & 5 Wood out of my Bag this year and have replaced them with 17, 22 & 25 deg Hybrids. So my Bag is made up of my Driver, 3 x Hybrids, 7 - PW, 2 Wedges & my Putter. I may have sacrificed some distance, but I have gained accuracy & it's much lighter to carry!

good video thanks james. my 4 iron was in danger of getting wrapped around a tree or thrown in a lake - so have a 4 hybrid (23.5 degree). spending a lot of time in low rough and trees as i do, it's a great confidence booster to shallow the face and give it a whack out of trouble. the ball may barely leave the ground - but i can fairly sure it's going to be straight. :-)

Flying high, landing steep is the exact reason why the PGA Tour has seen an explosion of 5 woods being used (and reportedly some 7 woods as well) because the entire Strokes Gained statistical analysis of golf has proved they have to take advantage in this area - bomb the driver and then have both a 3 wood and a 5/7 wood (2 distance choices) so that they can get to all Par 5s - and now a 64 degree wedge is much more common for getting up & down also. These are also fantastic clubs for all slower swinging players. I think the irony however is that on many courses being over the back of a green is worse than being short - so while you may not ever hit your 5/4 irons as high and well, and you won't get that perfect 50 degree land angle into a tucket pin you can get with this club, you may also get into less trouble - and since amateurs have terrible short games, a crappily hit 4 iron may ironically be better more often - which is why everyone needs to work on their short game in order to fully benefit from being able to hit towering 5/7/9 woods into greens.

Hi James, great video. I’m a new golfer - 1 year in now WHC of 30 on the dot - I really struggle with my irons, I’m now at the point where I don’t usually consider hitting anything longer than an 8 iron - so 7 iron and above are usually out of the question for me. But I absolutely love hitting my woods - well I hit my 5 wood and 7 wood - I don’t touch the 3 wood anymore as it’s too inconsistent. I’ve just gone and purchased an 11 wood from Nordic Golf - I think it’s an Acer XDS (cheap but I’m taking a gamble!) it has 29 degrees of loft - I’m hoping it will give me that 140-160 yard shot because at the moment the 7 wood is a bit too long for that range and the more I “take off” the swing speed the more it becomes unnatural and more likely to not hit a good one. At the moment my 8 iron goes about 130 on a good strike so I’m usually either deliberately hitting the shot too short to avoid using the 7 iron or trying to take some off it with the 7 wood - also when trying to take some off it, the trajectory doesn’t get as high and spin not as high so not as likely to hold a green etc I don’t know what it is about the woods but my consistency is good and I’m the envy of 2 of my mid handicapper playing partners - it may be that I don’t have to swing “as hard” and can focus more on impact whereas with irons I feel I have to swing their socks off to get any response. In all fairness I’ve not been fitted for any of my clubs. Just wanted to give you my thoughts and why I’m looking at a higher lofted wood - I’m happy to post here again after I’ve had the 11 wood for a few weeks.

How much is this club and is it available now?. I know Amazon has a some all "Woods" set. I had played golf with a guy quite a while back that had all the different lofted woods in his bag, i remember asking him why and his reply was he had a bad back but loved golf and the clubs made it easier for him to hit and swing. So that maybe the reason why somebody would want to have all "Woods" in their bag.

I know that is a bit much for most of you. That's okay because I was exactly the same way. But I wanted to strengthen my play in the 165-175 yard range. So now I have hybrids which replace my 4, 5, and 6 iron. It's fun hitting everyone of them, and I am never out of a hole. My 7 wood has been in my bag for more than 10 years and I would only replace it if I could find a Callaway v series 7 wood

I just googled the LA Jolla 7 wood, thing looks older than I am😂😂😂 it's dope tho. I love the rails on that thing, they look really cool & im sure it makes hitting on the fairway smooth asf. There's no shame in older clubs, I know we're constantly bombarded with "new technology" clubs, but I've used both old & new clubs & there's not much of a difference. Infact, sometimes the simplicity of older clubs makes them far easier to hit. There's always a learning curve when I buy a new club, but when I game with an older one, I just swing and hit my target from the getgo. I was gaming with an older king cobra 5 wood for awhile that's probably around the same age as your 7 wood and it was my go-to club. I recently bought a speedback and lofted it up to 19.5°, and it's fantastic, but it's literally the very first 5 wood I've found that has an acceptable dispersion since I started golfing with my old 5 wood. When u find a club that works & is in good condition, stick with it. That's my philosophy

Have you ever tested the Taylor made p790 udi?

Great video as always James! If nothing else it might show why even some of the best players in the world have opted for more forgiving 4 irons. Perhaps a Mizuno 4 iron test is in order?

I have an adams tight lies 2, 7 wood and 22° loft. Great club for soft landing balls. Beware of the wind though as it launches very high

Mr Robinson. I like your videos and consider myself a fan of yours but, I have to tell you that you are not up to date on your info about the most lofted fairway woods ever. I personally own a Callaway 13 wood that is 31 degrees and an Adams Air Assault 28 degree 9 wood. Also, I own an Adams Clone 13 and 15 (yes 15) Wood. Respectively, the clones are 34 and 37 degrees. There are a lot of manufacturers out there that make full sets of these things that would be of particular interest to older golfers who can't hit a 4 iron and, furthermore, hold the green. I am heartened to see that Taylormade is offering the 9 wood. Most older golfers have no reason to hit long irons. Keep up the great videos...Cheers!!!

What if the 9 wood was the same length as a 9 iron? You could have a 9 wood, 7 wood, 5 wood and 3 wood as the only clubs in your bag. Same shafts and club head weights could make a lot more consistent.

ACER makes a 37 degree fairway metal. It's a 15 wood. The ACER XDS available at Value Golf on the states.

I had a divine 9 in high school. Loved that stupid club. I wish I still had it or maybe a 7. I live at elevation and I bet that would help me with the 240+ yard par 3s up here where 3 iron isn’t enough and my 4 wood is too much. Call it a gap wood lol.

Have you tested the GX-7 X-Metal driver. The manufacturers spiel reckons its the best driver for mid to high handicappers. Do you know if this is the case. Just starting to get back into golf and probably need to upgrade my 1970's clubs.

James. I can't use a hybrid off the fairway but stick a ball on a tee and I'm better than average. Just can't get the ball in the air and either top it or duff it lol it's embarrassing! Anyway, I've seen a dirt cheap Ping G2 9 wood 23° for a tenner so do you think that could be the answer? 🤞

I found an 11 wood (31°!) Not sure I have a use for it, however.

A lot of stopping power for 200 yards out! Food for thought!

callaway made a wood that they called the "heaven" wood (11) years ago. Never saw anyone but seniors use one, but seniors are also the first place I ever saw someone use a set that was entirely hybrids. Oh, you just mentioned the heaven wood.

Having had many troubles with the s@@@@ks, over the years, I now carry in my bag 7,9,11,13 and a 15 woods. So easy to hit the ball with, straight, high ball flight and the freedom knowing you are not going to have a hosel rocket. 5 handicap and know how to get the ball around the course.

@David Hyland the brand of clubs are ORLIMAR, found them on amazon , paid a little import tax and never looked back.
