I know that the hippo kills crocodiles in this video, but I still want to see a scene showing how hippos are facultative herbivores like deers. (Very controversial topic)
@fishyfishyfishy500akabs89 ай бұрын
Hippos are only facultative omnivores. They primarily eat plants and have to to eat plants for the bulk of their diet and can only eat small quantities of meat or they get sick because their digestive system isn’t built for large meat quantities.
@Memezndreamz9 ай бұрын
@@fishyfishyfishy500akabs8 you know there are reports of hippos actively blocking river ways to kill wildebeest right? Plus, what’s the point of their jagged teeth except racking up a kill count?
@fishyfishyfishy500akabs89 ай бұрын
@Skyler517 Yes, that's why I say facultative omnivores, they certainly eat meat but they are limited in how much they can ingest. There's also a good amount of sightings where hippos kill but don't eat what they kill. They still have a leg up on animals like those said wildebeest though because they are actually adapted to kill. They ain't omnivores in the way humans are where we can eat large quantities of meat without getting sick. Their stomach pH for example is higher (less acidic) than pigs for example. Low stomach pH is important as while meat is super easy to digest and can be digested by even some of the most obligate herbivores, the problem is that it often carries with it some amount of pathogens that need be destroyed by a sufficiently powerful digestive system.
