The fact that this episode got hated on by so many non-fans of the games for being "woke" because it featured two gay guys in love is baffling. Like they were gay in the games too, you know? It was just more subtle since it was back in 2013 and representation wasn't that great back then. And don't get me started on the "it's a TV show about zombies, not romance" argument.

There's a tweet that came out near this episode's airing where one of the showrunners were like "C'mon, y'all, this was supposed to be the HAPPY episode." Which is what makes it really special, giving a genuinely believable 20 year old relationship of two people thriving after the world ends and taking care of each other. It's HARD to write happy things that make you cry from beauty, not sadness.

And the window was the game loading screen. Nick Offerman got the sript but really wasn't interested in doing a show based on a video game. But his wife, Megan Meullaly, read it - she told him, "Oh, honey, you're doing this." And he'll probably wind up with an Emmy for it.

Might be my favorite episode of the season. A great deviation from the game and a beautiful emotional episode. Good ol Nick Offerman killed it! Even though it’s a sad tearjerker in retrospect it’s a pretty happy story. They found love in an ugly world under difficult circumstances and were able to build something together and die together on their own terms. Bill was a damn badass and I loved getting to see a bunch of his perspective. Clearly they can faithfully adapt the game well while also making interesting and meaningful changes/additions to the narrative so it makes me excited for the future of the show. A perfect example of what it means to be a faithful adaptation. Every medium has its strengths and weaknesses, a TV show doesn't have "gameplay" but it can follow different characters in a way that games often can't. They were able to tell this story in a way that takes advantages of the different medium without betraying the source. We didn't need to see Bill become a bitter curmudgeon, a character necessary to move a videogame plot forward. He got the ending he deserved while fulfilling the same role in the story, and we got one of the best episodes of television this year.

Bill is a fan favourite from the games so this was a risky bet. Imagine reading the outline, you would be like, nah that shit won't fly. So with how much respect they paid to the source material having such a departure was ballsy AF.

finally someone else reacted to the use of On The Nature of Daylight just like i did. i was already emotional and when that song kicked in i knew instantly that i was done for. i have NEVER cried harder at any piece of media, film or tv, than i did during this episode.

The scene on the couch, when frank tells bill about his last day, is so heartbreaking. I cry everytime. If it was possible this deserved some kind of oscar/academy award just for this episode. I never played the game, and first two episodes were ok, but this episode was a game changer for me and I got invested into the tv series.

I have loved this episode since I watched it and I have only grown to love it more. Even separate of the game, it is so rare that gay characters get happy, shameless endings. Their marriage genuinely makes me cry, because they came from a time where it wasn't even legal and yet in the chaos and destruction of this world, they make their own rules and find love. They didn't die terrible, gruesome deaths. Comparitevely, they get such a blisfful ending. It's such a lovely departure that I think really encapsulates the heart of what the show tried to do. It's an apocolypse story that deviate from it's focus on "zombies", but the people. The good and the bad. This episode is sooo special to me. Still cried watching this reaction lol.

Lol I had the same reaction when I heard on the nature of daylight again. Probably one of the most beautiful songs ever made that always makes me cry.

I feel like while TLOU show set the standard for video game adaptations, Ep3 set a new standard for storytelling in tv shows period.

Regarding the lack of spores, the co-creater didnt want to have people wearing masks all thr time, not to mention if it were spores the human race would likely not be a human race anymore.

Bill in the show was the exact inverse of Bill in the game but served a similar role... In the game, he is alone and broken, he says 'caring about people is only good for one thing, getting you killed.' Frank left him because Bill stayed isolated and refused to let anyone in. He is a picture of what Joel might be if he stays closed off. In the show, Bill is a picture of what Joel can be if he's willing to open up and let someone (Ellie) in. He finds purpose in life again. Bill and Frank get the closest thing we see to a happy ending in the whole show: they live a full life together and then die peacefully sleeping in each other's arms. It sets up a great contrast, especially once Joel starts opening up to Ellie and you see him starting to feel love and joy again. And it also sets you up for a sucker punch when that love and protective connection to Ellie leads him to make some monstrous and destructive choices. Because, like Bill with Frank, Ellie becomes Joel's sole purpose after so long without one. He literally would not survive without her, just like Bill doesn't survive without Frank.

I remember this as its own story in the last of us universe rather than an episode of season 1. Its got a very different and special place in my brain. November from the album memoryhouse if you want to check out more cheat code music. He was also featured heavily on Leftovers to a frustratingly good effect.

This is one of my favorite episodes of any show. I love everything about it from the character development, the way it was translated from the show, the casting, how it was shot,.. just everything. Also going to add that I think telling someone they are your purpose is almost more heartfelt than saying "I love you"

True. This kinda weirdly reminds me of an episode from Bly Manor which focused on the lady of the lake in the sense that they both kinda halted the main story to give an entire episode focused on side characters with a beautiful contained story. Episodes that can be watched on their own without watching the other episodes and still be like competent short films. I didn't even like Bly Manor that much but I still thought that episode was one of the best single episodes of any show I've ever watched. Same with this, though I didn't think it's a 10/10 like the lady of the lake episode.
