I misquoted Dr Michelle Wong! Aka lab muffin. It was NINE passes of a sunscreen stick but that only gets you roughly an SPF of 19. I think it's the fact that they state on their website that all of their products cater to "all skin types and tones," and that is not necessarily true. That is false marketing. I completely understand your argument about how the woman's sunscreen shade is the un-tinted OG version, but then at that point I think Fenty would do well to remove the lightest foundation shades from the Shade 1 lineup. I am very fair-skinned and the eaze drop shade 1 is my go-to foundation for everyday makeup, but I swatched the sunscreen that *should* fit my shade and it was far too yellow and warm. If shade 1 for the sunscreen was marketed as fitting eaze drop shades 2-4 instead of including 1 as well, then I think the argument of "her shade is un-tinted" would hold up better, in my opinion. Fenty does still hold the accountability for suggesting that the sunscreen shade 1 can fit the palest of the pale, when it cannot.

Lush had a DIY foundation where you bought a white base, an undertone (pink or yellow) and dark and light pigments to mix your own perfect shade. I don't understand why not more brands have done this. An idea would be to use an app to tell you your shade and generate a recipe for mixing your own personal foundation. It would be more environmentally friendly as the company doesn't have to make as many products.

I hate to disagree with your statement that simply being pale enough for non-tinted mineral sunscreen means tinted sun screens aren’t for fair skinned people. The more I think about it - it’s a bad argument. Non tinted Zinc sunscreens don’t work for multiple reasons - they are still visible over my pink cheeks AND in photos in direct light/flash. While they may not be AS visible in most lighting conditions when viewed with a naked eye, a close look will make it apparent that something is off because it tends to cast a bit grey/off-tone to a hue noy typically seen as particularly healthy-looking. Super pale does not equal paper white, after all - there are undertones and off-casting that you are either not accounting for, or intentionally overlooking. On the other hand, I no longer have patience for western brands, and luckily have the entirety of the Korean market available to me these days, so it’s not like I’m entirely lacking selection.

The girl with the fair skin is right, most foundations are either yellow or orange. But alot of us pale people have very cool, pinkish undertones. The white cast of a sunscreen can make you look even more pale btw, that's why we use them too, to add that pop of healthy glow back. The way I fix it is to buy a concealer or foundation closest to my skintone. So that's once rosy/cool toned one, which is still yellow compared to my skin. Then I mix it with a cool toned red/pink liqued blush on my hand to get a perfect colour match. It works perfectly! If the colour is still too warm you can add in a little bit of blue colour corrector (liquid). I know it sounds like alot of work, but once you know your personal mix a bit it's very easy. At the moment I use the NARS radiant creamy concealer in the color Vanilla (which is very greyish beige) and mix that with a spot of the NARS liquid blush Dolce Vita. I use these two because the textures mix very well.

OMG i can't believed I missed a video! Bad on me. LOL on the Zinc comments, because I do literally use a 'paint for the face' (that's what it's called) made with titanium dioxide as part of my foundation routine. The whole issue with foundations not catering for very fair skin is definitely one I can relate to, and yes it is very frustrating when companies do offer a wider range of 'fairer' shades and then they don't end up selling that well. My question then would be, "If the product is actually good, and works well for fairer skinned people, then why aren't they a beauty staple in ever pale skinned girl's makeup bag?" And for me I do think a lot of it is cultural and modern societal pressures/ideals around what is supposedly a 'desirable' skin tone. Especially having grown up in Australia with the whole mythologised BS of the 'bronzed aussie' look in the 70s and 80s especially, I've still noticed that even today when it's at least more acceptable to not look like a rotisserie chicken, there is still this limited skin shade range that is considered 'attractive'. If you go too dark on the spectrum then it's hello instituitionalised racism and all of the absolute wrongs that go with that; if you go too fair on the spectrum then people suddenly think they have the right to walk up to you and say things like, "OMG, you're so pale, that's gross, you should try and get some colour". That's the thing in some cultures, on the one hand people will give lip service to the idea that you should embrace your natural shade of skin tone, but if you're skin tone is pale then you're not supposed to actually seem like you're embracing your natural skin shade. Like whatever you do don't just boldly walk into a store and pick up a shade of foundation that is actually pale enough to match your skin tone; oh no, that would indicate you actually like being that pale. Instead what your meant to do is waste money on bronzers, and makeup shades that will give you that 'natural looking glow', even if your shade is glow in the dark white and bronzer anything makes you look like a clown, and maybe try a fake tan just to see how ridiculous that looks on you as well; and only then can you walk into a makeup store and discreetly mutter to a salesperson that you'd like to buy 'shade that actually matches my pale arse skin' foundation and then sneak out of the shop like you've just committed a cardinal skin of not being 'acceptable' to societies' beauty standards. Just personally I don't do that myself, and haven't since at least 1983, but I also know the amount of flack and insults I've gotten over the years for being 'le gasp' fairer skinned than is deemed "acceptable", and I know a lot of pale skin folks that do end up caving into societal pressures to try and make themselves look anything other than someone who is wholly and fully embracing of their actual shade of skin tone. It's a metric eff tonne of BS and until we finally stop trying to fit people into limited molds of beauty 'ideals' then unfortunately brands who release more fair skinned inclusive brands are going to end up not doing that well in the long run. Thanks for coming to Ted Talk.

She absolutely has a right to complain and feel excluded when it comes to shades of makeup. I’m half Asian and even I can’t find foundation light enough for me, it makes me look orange. Recently everything seems to cater for a specific group of people and claims to be ‘inclusive’. It’s not inclusive if you’re still excluding a large group of people. I’m sick of the sensitivity in makeup when it comes to darker skinned people, they don’t need special treatment. We need shades for everyone, her disappointment is absolutely valid.

With the Fenty Skin debacle, I 100% understand her struggle, but I don't appreciate her angle. I have incredibly pale skin (I would actually say I'm probably a bit lighter than her) and finding sheer products is especially hard. I would also push back on "her shade is zinc". Trust me: my shade is not zinc. I have a lot of redness in my face that is not on my body (thanks rosacea) and if I put a sunscreen that has a real white cast on my skin, I look RIDICULOUS. Like I just washed off face paint. Something with a light enough tint would help to counteract some of that redness would be nice in a sunscreen. I have yet to find this product light enough for myself. However, there are still A LOT of products that can and do work enough for me. Far more than what is given to people with darker skintones. I also believe there is an sort of a link between this kind of exclusion and the tanning industry. Pushing a certain form of beauty is to foster insecurity and sell more product (ie tanning). But all this said, I feel that what is darker skins face is actually a total dehumanisation and erasure within the industry. It told white people we have to be more tan, and told POC they have to be white... One of these things is not like the other... TLDR I understand her struggle, but I think this just further shows that people don't quite grasp WHERE this exclusions in the beauty industry come from, and how to respectfully talk about both.

I’m very pale (too pale to wear foundation) and I can’t wear mineral sunscreen without adding bronzing drops to it because even on me it leaves a white cast - at least it does if you use the correct amount of sunscreen. No one is pure white - “zinc oxide coloured” …seriously wtf 🙄

I did a lot of research online for years to get appropriate makeup shades for my see through skin. Was told korean make up so bought the palest shade and ... it was too dark. Ive just lived with the orange line around my neck and face. But! I can use those white heavy powders to try and even it out!

I've had the same trouble finding a pale enough shade without it being too yellow. I'm the shade of a neutral ghost.

18:12 my dad is currently working with an American based skin care company, so he was telling me about their formulas and said they have found that reducing retinol % in serums actually boosted the long term benefits. I had been using Neutrogena’s Retinol Regenerating Cream with a retinol percentage of 0.5% and after a week of clear skin I started to break out. He got me their retinol (0.2%) and niacinamide (5%) combo. After three days on the new serum I cleared up, and stayed that way. I use it daily now and the lower amount of retinol really is wonderful. Bigger isn’t better! Less is more!

She is right about foundation shades but why is she going on about the tinted sunscreen? That was made so those with melanin can also use the Fenty mineral sunscreen without the white caste

I feel the pale girl, as someone with rosacea/acne prone skin I have spent most of my adult life having to choose between no makeup and feeling awful about my appearance or wearing makeup that's too dark and/or yellow and getting to feel awful for different reasons. I've been happy since Korean makeup came over, I've finally been able to find cooler toned pale makeup I can use, but that whole new market opening up is still only helping pale folks. Those brands don't generally make deep tones. We deserve inclusion too, and I agree a brand can't advertise as *fully* inclusive if they're not catering to the *whole* range of skin tones, so I get her frustration there and I don't think she should be dragged for voicing that frustration, but honestly I'm not bothered as the selection for dark shades is still Not Good. There's a lot of brands that technically have darker shades but the undertones are all wrong so while they're *technically* out there, people of those dark skin tones still can't use them without looking like an overcooked carrot or a week-old corpse. And I think that would make me feel worse than any slightly dark/yellow shade has ever made me feel. Those of us who are very pale can also do things like mixing white into foundations to help a bit. Heavily melanated people can't just mix in black.
