Workaround for the broken GStrech tool at 22:00 You can use the built in Addon "Loop Tools" there is a GStrech option as well which can be set to "annotate" and works. Overall great tutorial, thanks for sharing :)

You don’t always need to retopologise. The point of retopology is to prepare the model for animation, as really dense meshes don’t animate well. But if you’re only planning on sculpting, and not rigging or animating, you don’t always need to retopo. Check out my Spyro or Yoshi sculpting videos to see what I mean. That said it’s good practice, so I definitely encourage you to do it!

@@JamieDunbar I don't know about animation, but I think I want to do some posing and even facial expressions on some sculpts. But I guess I will be selective. I will look into your suggestion. I have been trying to make body base meshes of subdivided cubes that I have created by duplicating, scaling, rotating and sculpting. But the parts and details don't fit so good together when I try to sculpt over it. I almost want to retopo the bodies for better face flow. I have so much to learn. Thank you for your answer!
@JamieDunbar
@JamieDunbar 3 жыл бұрын
For simple posing you can probably get away with automatic retopology (like the remesh tool). But if you’re still a beginner I’d recommend doing the retopology. These automatic methods are kind of cheats, and it’s only with experience you learn when you can and can’t cheat.

I'm having a lot of issue with the keymappings in blender 3.3.1, windows 11. What's the new way to bring up the "shift right-click" menu?
@JamieDunbar
@JamieDunbar Жыл бұрын
Hey Ethan. It's been a while since I made this tutorial, but I think even back in 2.9 the keymappings clashed. When you shift/right-click, is it moving the 3D cursor? I just tested in Blender 3.2, and as long as you enable the "SPEEDRETOPO" keymap, it seems to override the 3D cursor keymap and looks like it's still working as expected. Do a search for "shift right mouse" in the Keymap preferences. It should stand out, as it's all in CAPS. But it's under the '3D view generic'. Let me know if you have issues. This would be much easier to explain with a screenshot.

@JamieDunbar
@JamieDunbar 3 жыл бұрын
Heya Untrollable. Most modifiers have an "edit mode" toggle next to the display toggle. This toggle allows you to enable or disable the modifier when you're in edit mode. Presumably if you're going into edit mode and your model is changing, you have this disabled. Enable it and your model should stop moving when you tab in and out. Reopology in Blender can be a bit flaky at times, so I recommend applying your shrinkwrap modifier periodically and recreating it, which Speed Retopo can do automatically for you.

when i control click it moves vertices nearby...how do i stop thjat?
@JamieDunbar
@JamieDunbar 2 жыл бұрын
Heya Kiyamlol. There's a couple of different things that might be. The most common is simply that the shrinkwrap modifier isn't that accurate in Blender. It does some guessing, so when you add another vertex, it 'guesses' again which can shift the vertices around it. The best way around this I've found is to simply apply your modifiers (which locks them in place, no more guessing) and recreate them. It's been a little while, but I'm pretty sure Speed Retopo has a tool that does all this automatically for you. Which is great, because I usually have to do it a couple of times per model.

Hey DrageaMoonglare. Do you mean the menu where you can change the pivot point? Some of the options are 'median point', '3D cursor', 'individual origins', etc.? I'm pretty sure that one is standard with Blender, so you shouldn't need to enable any addons. Full stop (.) is the keyboard shortcut.

@JamieDunbar
@JamieDunbar 3 жыл бұрын

@@JamieDunbar yeah got it thanks... If it's ok is it good to initially seperate body parts and retopologize and in the end join together. While doing like that is it ok if the number of vertices in the neck and body is not equal? Can it cause any further problem while animating?
@JamieDunbar
@JamieDunbar 3 жыл бұрын
I often retopologise sections of the body (for example, I’ll often do the body first and keep it really low poly, then do the face, then try and join them and add extra edge loops as needed). There’s nothing wrong with the neck and the body having different vertex numbers to begin with, but eventually you’ll have to make them the same number so you can join them properly. If your faces have more than 4 vertices it will probably cause problems while animating.

Hi Michaela. Objects or characters that are asymmetrical are always more tricky. Usually I model them as much as I can using a mirror modifier, then apply the modifier and model the asymmetrical parts manually. It takes more time and can be a pain when rigging (as you’ll need to paint your weights the same way - do as much as possible with symmetry on before fixing the asymmetrical parts manually) but it’s really the only way to do it.

the vid is amazingly informational, the the music in your videos is really repetitive and a bit too much, some variation of different tracks would be really good.

Hi Endless. I was hoping to have the next video out before Christmas, but that obviously didn’t happen. I’ve got guests here for the holidays, but should be able to get back to making tutorials early in the new year 😊

Retopoflow hides and locks away all the tool arsenal that Blender offers. It tries to be its own thing slappd on top of blender. Which kind of makes it disempowering for anythign else than straight organic topology work. And even then, not having acces to all the usual tools is an odd choice. I wouldnt call it "even more powerful".

Heya Ginger. It depends how you intend to use the model. I’d suggest checking out either my displacement or normal maps tutorial that go over the next steps: kzbin.info/www/bejne/iGPUaKKQgdhjfac kzbin.info/www/bejne/foHJonxuoadoh5I

@@JamieDunbar do i have to do the normal maps *and* the displacement?
@JamieDunbar
@JamieDunbar 3 жыл бұрын
@@gingerdog8203 No, definitely not. Generally speaking you'd do a normal map if you were making a video game, and displacement maps if you were making a film (although films tend to use both). The technique for baking them is almost exactly the same, so you really only need to watch one of those tutorials.

Does this tool work on iOS? I tried installing it, but can't get it to work.

Hi Amy. I must admit, I don’t know. And I don’t have iOS to test it for you 😥 Your best bet is probably to contact the developer.

Yeah I heard. Definitely a sad thing. I've updated the comments, so hopefully no one will be led astray. Still a good addon and a solid cheap alternative to Retopoflow.

Yeah, only found that out myself a couple of weeks ago. Thankfully it's still pretty cheap and a good alternative to Retopoflow, but I can appreciate not everyone is going to have the disposable income to throw at it :(

Someone did not check out the usage guidelines #3 for the Community Badge 👀 www.blender.org/about/logo/#community Anyways great video. Why not record blender in full screen mode? top bar and windows taskbar seems like wasted pixels on such a high quality video

Retopo in Blender is archiac compared to 3D Coat and the selling point for this addon its as impressive as sand to a camel in need of water. U can use the Bridge function thru Loop Tools, which is basically the only thing u need ( the relax, flatten, circle tools come in handy too) and the fill function. Its quicker to disable shrinkwrap, extrude a section if cylindrical, enable it back on, smooth vertices by disabling and then enabling the shrinkwrap (u can use the sculpt smooth for this), and its done... Bob' s yr uncle. No need for this useless addon. Hehe

Oh really? How come? I get the feeling Speed Retopo hasn't been updated for a little while. There's a couple of things in there that don't work, or don't feel like they've been updated to the newer 2.8+ interface. But all in all I enjoyed using it. Certainly more than I enjoyed retopo with Blender's default tools. What was so bad about your experience?
