Hi Jamie, love the video! Is it possible to enable an "in front" option within the addon, so it is possible to make the retopology visiable even it is behind the target mesh?
@JamieDunbar Жыл бұрын
Hey Bertle. I just checked on version 3.2.8 and it doesn't seem like there is a good way to do it. The best thing I could find was to reverse the normals (under 'target cleaning'), which makes them visible through the mesh...but then of course you can't seem them from the front side 😅 I can't say I've ever had any use for this particular display option, so I might be missing something. But it doesn't appear that it's currently possible.

Hey I love the detailed tutorials. I'm new to blender so thus is helping. I have a sculpt I want to use to animation. Can you tell me the recommended amount of faces to have before retopologizing?
@JamieDunbar3 жыл бұрын
Hey Moel. Welcome to the Blender club ;) You asked about the recommended face count *before* retopology? How many faces you need while sculpting is completely dependent on how much detail you need. This Gremlin ended up with around 25million, although a lot of computers may not be able to handle that level of detail.
@midnightmediareview3 жыл бұрын
@@JamieDunbar ok cool. During this video when you decimated the gremlin you said it was completely useless for animation due to how many faces after decimation. My mesh is about 6 million.
@JamieDunbar3 жыл бұрын
@@midnightmediareview Any time you decimate a model it makes it pretty useless for animation. The way the polygons get laid out during decimation makes deforming those meshes nearly impossible. There's nothing wrong with your high poly sculpt having 6million faces. But even a super computer would struggle to animate it. That's why you'll want to retopologise it - to lower it's polygon count to make it animatable.
@midnightmediareview3 жыл бұрын
@@JamieDunbar oooooh ok ok now um understanding. So no matter the poly count, everything is animatable after it is retopoligized! Thank you so much!
@JamieDunbar3 жыл бұрын
@@midnightmediareview You'll want to make sure your retopology isn't incredibly high poly. Even with nicely laid out faces, a retopologised mesh with millions of faces will lag like crazy when animating. The number of faces for a good, animatable character will vary a lot. But just as an example, AAA games have characters with around 50,000 polygons. For film, you can go higher.

The automatic retopology tools are great for quick and dirty work - and sometimes that’s all you need. But if you plan on making a character for animation you almost always need fine control over the topology - in which case you need to do it manually.

Unfortunately I'm only going to be so much help here. That sounds like a programming problem, and the addon has always been a little slow. I've heard there's a plan to merge the addon into the main Blender code, which will hopefully get around some of these performance issues. Until then, make sure you're using the latest versions of both Blender and the addon. And obviously how powerful your computer is will play a significant role. If problems persist, see your developer? :P

@@JamieDunbar Hey man, thanks heaps for the response. I've chosen to learn retopo with blenders built in tools for now. Would be perfect if it could handle over a million and even more polygons without any lags. Actually the point of any re-topology program/addons is the ability to handle hundreds of millions triangles to be able to retopologize any detailed object. I do not want to spend my time for preparing my highpoly model for retopologizing, as it can lose some important details.
@JamieDunbar3 жыл бұрын
Hey Vladko. It would definitely be nice if it could handle more polygons. That said, there's no reason why you couldn't duplicate your 5million poly model, decimate that down to 500,000, retopologise that model, then go back to your 5mil model to extract displacement maps. It's an extra step that hopefully won't be necessary after another few updates, but you could certainly work around it.
