Jan Peerce & Giorgio Tozzi sing the famous Serenade ("Overhead the moon is beaming") from Romberg's "The Student Prince." Franz Allers conducts (most likely the Columbia Symphony Orchestra). This is from the 1963 Columbia "Student Prince" excerpts album (also with Roberta Peters) which many consider to be the best album with excerpts from this operetta on record. Unfortunately it has not been released on CD (officially!). If anyone wants some other specific excerpts from this album posted please ask in a comment!

Wonderful diction. Very impressive. Thanks so much for posting. Peerce had an amazing voice and surprisingly emotional.

Yes please post the entire album?! Best Student Prince album ever. Recoded in 1962 with the Anita Darien singers, and Peters in superb form. It was here on KZbin but has since been removed. It was never released onto CD. It’s a hard to find record.

Remarkable how well he sings here at about the age of 60 - and even more so, that he went on to sing well for almost another two decades.

@glomur1. Non, il n'est pas supérieur à Mario LANZA, son interprétation est différente. MarioLANZA, est le ténor à la voix de cristal et à l'émotion unique ! GC @glomur1. Not, it is not higher than Mario LANZA, her interpretation is different. MarioLANZA, is the tenor with the crystal-clear voice and the single emotion! GC

I have a recording of this on CD as well, and this has gotta be the best version of this show. Roberta Peters blows the doors off Kathie. And Peerce is older than 60 here? I never knew that before, but it makes sense, since he discovered Peters. He rocks.

How on earth did you find this on cd? I’ve been looking for decades. It’s a fantastic recording from 1962 I believe. An old family friend is Detlef in the recording, Bob Sands. He leads “To the inn we’re marching” “entrance of Kathy” and “Drinking Song”. He had a beautiful clear bright tenor.

From this album the "Golden Days" is sung by Tozzi only. There might be a reprise in the operetta that has both together but unfortunately not on this particular album. I can post it by Tozzi if you're still interested but won't be able to until the new year.

This is absolutely wonderful! What a powerful voice - reminds me of Tucker / Caruso.

His voice was similar to Tucker's (his brother-in-law incidentally) and although it is said his voice was less powerful, I have always found his tone to be much more consistent than Tucker's.

@medusaview I just listened to the del Monaco clip you cited. It is obvious we are talking apples and oranges. del Monaco's singing was not "strain" as I define it. I'm talking about something else.

@medusaview Let me just say that students of Bel Canto technique, which I assume you are, are far far ahead of countless famous pop singers who really don't know how to sing. They may be rich and famous, but I don't admire them in the least. I believe we who love opera, operetta, lieder, musicals should simply go our own way.

¿Quien cantó la parte de Kathie en la película de la MGM 1953? ¿Sería Elizabeth Doubleday? Gracias por responder.

@medusaview Let me attempt to clarify. I would characterize del Monaco's performance in that clip as "intense," rather than "strained." Strained is bad. Intense is good, at least when a piece calls for intensity. Strain on the other hand, is never good. del Monaco was not working against himself, at least not that I could tell. That's why I would not classify his singing in that clip as "strained."

@medusaview To me the final criterion is never the presence of something, but the lack of something, specifically, strain. Strain is the sound of the singer working against himself. To me the finest voices are those with no perceptible trace of strain. Many tenors can hit the highs. They are not singing flat. But you have to ask yourself, are their highs, or even their mids, really sounds you want to listen to? If not, then what's the point?

@medusaview Yes, that's it. It's like driving a car and stepping on the gas and the brake at the same time. Many bad tenors sound that way. They have never fully let loose their vocal chords.

@medusaview I am inclined to agree. Peerce's voice sounds brighter and more transparent than Tucker's, to my ears anyway. Tucker's voice sounds slightly more contained and throaty. In short, I prefer the sound of Peerce's singing voice to Tucker's. I hasten to add that both were great singers, but if we're making comparisons, that's what I would say.
